LONDON, Aug. 4 -- English league champions and FA Cup holders Manchester City defeated European champions Liverpool on penalties to lift the Community Shield for the second year in a row at Wembley here on Monday.

Raheem Sterling gave City an early lead in the 12th minute, when he prodded home David Silva's flick-on from close range.

The former Liverpool striker struck the post in a one on one in the second half before the Reds took control.

Joel Matip levelled the score with just 13 minutes remaining after heading home Virgil van Dijk's cross.

Mo Salah came close to snatching victory for the Reds in added time, only for Kyle Walker to race back and acrobatically clear the Egyptian's header off the line.

The match went straight to penalties. City goalkeeper claudio Bravo saved Georginio Wijnaldum's kick and Gabriel Jesus sealed the victory by completing a perfect record.

Liverpool attempted to turn the screw and win the Shield inside 90 minutes, with substitute Naby Keita, on for Fabinho, called Bravo into action once more.

City manager Pep Guardiola said after the match, "An incredible final from both sides, no team can dominate for 90 minutes. We had real good moments, in the last 15 minutes we were exhausted and they had chances to win the game.

"It was a good test for both teams. It's nice for the players to realise what they will face this season. "

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said, "It was a really good performance, a powerful one in the second half...I cannot be disappointed today. The performance was much more important today than a win. We know we are still here, we can still play proper football."
