BRUSSELS, Dec. 28 -- Slovakia's Petra Vlhova won her first World Cup giant slalom Friday at Semmering, Austria, and stopped world leader Mikaela Shiffrin's run for the record.
Shiffrin, who was seeking for the 15th win in this calendar year, had a slim 0.02 lead after the first run, which she timed 1:02.32. But the American finished only 10th by 1:03.06 in the second run to finish fifth in the event.
Vohova grabbed the chance to have the second-best result of 1:02.34 in the second run, whose total was 2:04.72, to win the discipline.
Germany's Viktoria Rebensburg and France's Tessa Worley finished second and third respectively.
Shiffrin still has chance for her record 15th win as she will compete a slalom on the same course on Saturday.
