5月15日，全国公安机关正式签发电子普通护照。电子普通护照的申办条件、签发时限、收费标准和有效期均与旧版普通护照相同，公民仅需在原有基础上提交本人指纹及签名信息即可依法申请。目前，世界上已经有90多个国家和地区使用电子普通护照。

中国启用电子护照——公安部副部长孟宏伟在电子普通护照签发启动仪式上说，该护照是按照国际标准设计的，采用防伪技术，并内置智能芯片，将为持照人带来更多的便利。

上面报道中的electronic passport就是电子护照，也叫e-passport、biometric passport, 或digital passport，这种护照是在传统护照的封面或者当中的某一页嵌入电子芯片此次签发的电子护照是普通护照，即公民因前往外国定居、探亲、学习、就业、旅行、从事商务活动等非公务原因出国的护照，正式称呼叫ordinary passport/regular passport，一般直接称passport。在中国，普通护照又可分因公普通护照相关阅读
