When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car, before they left, they asked me about how to find accommodation(住所).I suggested that they should stay at “bed and breakfast” houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
“We didn't stay at bed and breakfast houses,”they said.“Because we found that most families were away on holiday.”
I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays” because Spanish word for “holiday” is “vacaciones”.So they did not go to houses where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”,which in English meant there are free rooms. Then my friends went to houses where the sign said “NO VACANCIES”,because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full.As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish,a word very similar to “DIVERSION” means fun.In English it means that workman is repairing the road, and that you must take a different road .When my friends saw the word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun.Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages.Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee,I said “Thank you” in French.I meant that I would like some more. However,to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No,thank you”.
. “No vacancies” in English means ____.
A.no free rooms B.free rooms C.not away on holiday D.holidays
6. If you see a road sign that says “Diversion”,you will ____
A.fall into a hole
B.have a lot of fun and enjoy yourself
C.find that the road is blocked by people
D.have to take a different road
6. I was surprised when the coffee pot was taken away because I ____ .
A.hadn't finished drinking my coffee B.was expecting another cup of coffee
C.meant that I didn't want any more D.was never misunderstood No one wants to look silly or do the wrong thing at a new job. It is important to make the right impression—not the wrong one—from the very first day. You will face new people. You will be in a new place. It may be difficult to know what to do. Here are several tips to help you make it through the first days at a new job:
First impressions can last forever. Make sure you make a good one. Before your first day, find out if your new job has a dress code(准则). If so, be sure to follow it. No matter what, always be neat and clean.
Get to work on time. Employers value employees who come to work right on time. Give yourself an extra 15 minutes to make sure you arrive on time.
Pay attention to introductions. One of the first things that your supervisor(主管) may do is to introduce you to co-workers will be important to you. They are the ones who will answer your questions when the boss is not around.
Ask plenty of questions. Make sure that your supervisor has told you what is expected of you. If he or she has not told you your job duties, ask for a list. Set daily and weekly goals for yourself.
Don’t take too long for lunch. What is the lunch-hour policy at your new job? You can find out from your supervisor or your company’s personnel department。For example, do people eat at their desks or does everyone take a full hour outside the workplace?
Do not make personnel phone calls. You should never make personal phone calls to your friends and family unless it is an emergency.
Never be the first one to leave. Observe how your co-workers behave around leaving time. It does no look good for you to be eager to leave.

Should Internet Slang Be Prohibited?
Recently, Internet Slang, such as “GG, MM, Xia Mi”,has become popular among the teenagers Internet Slang should be .prohibited. There are different opinions on Internet Slang.
Some students think Internet Slang is vivid, fashionable and full of humor and intelligence. Besides, it makes chatting on the Internet quicker.
However, some other students think Internet Slang lacks depth of thought and is too simple. Also, it is hard to understand and not accepted by most people. The words sometimes might make people confused, even resulting in misunderstanding.
Every coin has two sides. In my opinion, living in the Information Age, if we don’t know the Internet Slang, we seem to fall behind the times. It will be OK as long as these terms are used correctly in proper situations.
