  A

The old man walked with a cane (拐杖) slowly into the restaurant. His poor jacket, patched (打补丁的) trousers, and worn-out (磨破的) shoes made him stand out from the usual Saturday morning breakfast crowd. Unforgettable were his pale blue eyes that sparkled like diamonds, large rosy cheeks, and thin lips that held a steady smile.

He walked towards a table by the window. A young waitress watched him and ran over to him, saying, “Here, Sir. Let me give you a hand with that chair.”

Without a word, he smiled and nodded a thank you. She pulled the chair away from the table. Supporting him with one arm, she helped him move in front of the chair, and get comfortably seated. Then she pushed the table up close to him, and leaned (斜靠) his cane against the table where he could reach it.

In a soft, clear voice he said, “Thank you, Miss.”

“You’re welcome, Sir.” She replied. “My name is Mary. I’ll be back in a moment. If you need anything, just wave at me.”

After he had finished a hearty meal of pancakes, bacon, and hot lemon tea, Mary brought him the change(找零), helping him up from his chair and out from behind the table. She handed him his cane, and walked with him to the front door. Holding the door open for him, she said, “Come back and see us, Sir!”

He nodded a thank you and said softly with a smile, “You are very kind!”

When Mary went to clean his table, she was shocked. Under his plate she found a business card and a note written on the napkin (餐巾纸), under which was a $ 100 bill.

The note on the napkin read, “Dear Mary, I respect you very much, and you respect yourself, too. It shows by the way you treat others. You have found the secret of happiness. Your kindness will shine through those who meet you.”

Christian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many people on the island had a disease called beri-beri. He was going there to try and find a cure.

At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (细菌) caused beri-beri. He raised some chickens. He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate — refined white rice (精炼米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery — that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (维生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food.

Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough vitamins from the food they eat. If they don’t, they can also take vitamin pills.

  55. The underlined word “cure” in Paragraph 1 probably means ______.

  A. a medical treatment to make people well again

  B. a kind of vitamin

  C. a kind of germ

  D. a kind of rice

  56. Why did Christian Eijkman raise some chickens?

  A. To eat them.

  D. To make money by selling them.

  57. If a person doesn’t get enough vitamins in his diet, he’d better ______.

  A. eat more rice

  B. eat more meat

  C. eat some chicken

  D. eat vitamin pills

  58. We can learn from the passage that ______.

  A. beri-beri was caused by chickens

  B. the Javanese didn’t like vitamins

  C. Christian Eijkman’s experiment was successful

  D. the Javanese’s disease was caused by a kind of germ

  C

Most children now chat daily either online or through their mobile phones. They are connecting to a huge number of other children all over the world. Some are shy “in real life” but are confident to communicate with others online; others find support from people of their own age on relationship problems, or problems at home.

Sometimes the online world, just like the real word, can introduce problems, such as bullying or arguments. Going online is great fun, but there are also a few people who use the Internet for offensive(冒犯性的)or illegal (非法的) aims. Children must be made aware of both the good things and the danger.

To keep children safe your management must cover the family computer. Just as you decide which TV programs are suitable, you need to do the same for the websites and chat rooms your children visit. Remind your children that online friends are still strangers. Reminding them of the risks will keep them alert (警惕).

Computer studies are part of schoolwork now, so it’s likely that your children may know more than you do. We get left behind when it comes to the latest gadgets (玩意儿) and interactive areas of websites, like chat rooms and message boards, which are especially strange. The language of chat is strange to many parents, too. Chatters love to use abbreviations such as: atb— all the best; bbfn— bye by for now; cul8er —see you later; gr8—great; idk— I don’t know; imbl— it must be love; kit —keep in touch; paw— parents are watching; lol—laugh out loud; xlnt— excellent!

  59. The passage is written for __________.

  A. children

  B. parents

  C. teachers

  D. net bar owners.

  60. The underlined word “aware” most probably means __________.

  A. careful

  B. proud

  C. to know

  D. to hear

  61. Which of the following will the author probably agree with?

  A. Children shouldn’t chat so much online.

  B. People had better not use the net language in real life.

  C. Parents are advised to choose suitable websites and chat rooms for their children.

  D. Children should surf the Internet together with their parents.

  62. When your son is chatting about something secret online with you standing beside him, he may use_______.

  A. bbfn.

  B. lol

  C. paw

  D. cul8er

In fine department stores everywhere, you’ll see the light-blue boxes of Estee Lauder (雅诗兰黛). These popular cosmetics (化妆品) are sold in more than 130 countriesWho’s the woman behind this worldwide cosmetics empire (帝国)? Estee Lauder herself, of courseThis businesswoman became, for a time, the world’s richest self-made woman. Her secret? “I didn’t get there by dreaming about it,” she would say. “I got there by doing it.” Estee was born in the early 1900s in Queens, New York. Her father ran a hardware (五金器具) store, and from him Estee learned how to be a successful salespersonEstee learned from her uncle John Schotz, too. He made creams in a small laboratory behind the family’s house. Estee watched him. Soon, she was experimenting with her own cosmetics. She put lipstick (唇膏) and creams on any

relative who’d let her, until her angry father told her to stop.

She married Joseph H. Lauder in 1930, and continued her experiments. She would cook dinner for the family, and at the same time, make her face creams. Then she began to sell her products in a Manhattan beauty shop.

In 1960, Estee began to sell her products in Europe. After many tries she succeeded and began selling her products in some stores in London. But France proved even more difficult. The store Galleries Lafayette refused to sell her products. So Estee “by accident” dropped a bottle of youth dew (香水) on the floor in the cosmetics departmentAs the scent spread around the store, customers (顾客) came over and asked to buy it. The store soon began selling Estee’s products.

Estee led her company until 1982, when her son Leonard took over the business. Until her health became worse in the mid-1990s, she continued to attend the opening of a new store wherever in the world. She died on April 24, 2004. Estee Lauder’s gift as a saleswoman was extraordinary. Her son Leonard said, “There was never anyone who could sell like she could.” All who worked for Estee appreciated her special gift.

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to cheat? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out (略去) important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.

For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery(彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”

This guy is a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $ 200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser!

He didn’t say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Some politicians (政客) often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she tries to get another term. One of her opponents (竞争对手) says, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true. However, an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had increased two million jobs.’’

Advertisers will sometimes use half–truths. It’s against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.” It fails to say that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.

This kind of cheating happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

  67. We may infer (推测) that the author believes people should ________.

  A. buy lottery tickets if possible

  B. make use of half–truths

  C. be careful about what they are told

  D. not trust the Yucky Company

  68. How many examples does the writer give to show how the truth is used to cheat?

  A. One

  B. Two

  C. Three

  D. Four

  69. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

  A. Using half truths is against the law.

  B. Technically, half truths are in fact lies.

  C. Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache.

  D. Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.

  70. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?

  A. He’s really a big loser!

  B. Sometimes the truth can lie as well.

  C. Advertisers will sometimes use half truths.

  D. It’s against the law to make false statements.

W: Yes. He leaned to sing from another patient, who was a music teacher... and he learned to sing not only in German, but also in English and Italian.

M: Huh... so, when did he first become famous?

W: Uh... when he was 25, he won first prize for his song We Are Young. He sang that in German.

M: Do you mean the song he sang on TV last night?

W: Yes. And a couple of years later, that song became very popular in Europe. And after that, he became famous all over the world, especially in Europe and South America.

  One possible version:

Francis Bacon once said: “knowledge is power.” We can be informed a great deal from it. Without knowledge, by no means can we achieve our life goal. Knowledge is like the wind in the ocean, which helps us – the boats move swifter towards the right direction.

As is frequently heard, “Knowledge can change one’s fate.” My brother-in-law is an exact explanation for this sentence. He was born in a remote countryside in Sichuan, whose parents are both farmers. With his great efforts, he was enrolled in Peking University and became an excellent doctor in a prestigious(有声望的) hospital after graduation. Whenever talking about his experience, he always tells us “knowledge did change his fate.”

Taking the above mentioned into consideration, I suppose it is a wise option to concentrate on study from now on. Believing the power of knowledge, we can create miracles not only for us but for our nation.
