  第一节(共15小题;每题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

  A

I was 9 years old when I found out my father was ill. It was 1994, but I can remember my mother’s words as if it were yesterday. “Kernel, I don’t want you to take food from your father, because he has AIDS. Be very careful when you are around him. ”

AIDS wasn’t something we talked about in my country when I was growing up. From then on, I knew that this would be a family secret. My parents were not together anymore, and my dad lived alone. For a while, he could take care of himself. But when I was 12, his condition(健康状况) worsened. My father’s other children lived far away, so it fell to me to look after him.

We couldn’t afford all the necessary medicine for him, and because Dad was unable to work. I had no money for school supplies and often couldn’t even buy food for dinner. I would sit in class feeling completely lost, the teacher’s words muffled as I tried to figure out how I was going to manage.

I did not share my burden (负担)with anyone. I had seen how people reacted to AIDS. Kids laughed at classmates who had parents with the disease(疾病). And even adults could be cruel. When my father was moved to the hospital, the nurses would leave his food on the bedside even though he was too weak to feed himself.

I had known that he was going to die, but after so many years of keeping his condition a secret. I was completely unprepared when he reached his final days. Sad and hopeless, I called a woman at the nonprofit National AIDS Support. That day, she kept me on the phone for hours. I was so lucky to find someone who cared. She saved my life.

I was 15 when my father died. He took his secret away with him, having never spoken about AIDS to anyone, even me. He didn’t want to call attention to AIDS. I do.

  56. What does Kernel tell us about her father?

  A. He had stayed in the hospital since he fell ill. B. He depended on the nurses in his final days.

  C. He worked hard to pay for his medication.

  D. He told no one about his disease.

  57. What can we learn from the underlined sentence?

  A. Kernel couldn’t understand her teacher.

  B. Kernel had special difficulty in hearing.

  C. Kernel was too troubled to focus on the lesson.

  D. Kernel was too tired to hear her teacher’s words.

  58. Why did Kernel keep her father’s disease a secret?

  A. She was afraid of being looked down upon.

  B. She thought it was shameful to have AIDS.

  C. She found no one willing to listen to her.

  D. She wanted to obey her mother.

  59. Why did Kernel write the passage?

  A. To tell people about the sufferings of her father.

  B. To show how little people knew about AIDS.

  C. To draw people’s attention to AIDS.

  D. To remember her father.

  B

I love charity(慈善) shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution(慈善机构), selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you won’t find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of money-making companies, and you are not damaging the earth, but finding a new home for unwanted goods.

The first charity shop was opened in 1947 in Britain by Oxfam. Its appeal(呼吁) to help postwar(战后的) Greece had been so successful that it had got lots of donations(捐赠). They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favorite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find children’s books, all 10 or 20 pence each.

Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don’t encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open.

The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more than £110 million a year, funding(资助)medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money? You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. You provide funds to a good cause and protect the environment.

  60. The author loves the charity shop mainly because of _______.

  A. its convenient location(地理位置)

  B. its great variety of goods

  C. its spirit of goodwill

  D. its nice shopping environment

  61. The first charity shop in the UK was set up to ____.

  A. sell cheap products

  B. deal with unwanted things

  C. raise money for patients

  D. help a foreign country

  62. Which of the following is TRUE about charity shops?

  A. The operating costs(运营成本) are very low.

  B. The workers are usually well paid.

  C. 90% of the donations are second-hand.

  D. They are open twenty-four hours a day.

  63. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?

  A. What to Buy a Charity Shops.

  B. Charity Shop: Its Origin & Development.

  C. Charity Shop: Where You Buy to Donate.

  D. The Public’s Concern about Charity Shops.

  C

With mild temperatures all year round and mountain hikes just steps away, it is no wonder that Vancouver is an outdoor sports place. Here are four great ways for you to try.

Cycle the Vancouver seawall around Stanley Park

Just a walk away from the downtown, the 10 km Vancouver seawall around Stanley Park is so popular that separate paths for wheeled and un-wheeled travelers have been built. It isn’t unusual to see couples moving along the trail on bicycles rented on Denman Street near the park entrance.

  Hike Pacific Spirit Regional Park

The seawall around Stanley Park may be as crowded as a downtown street, but there’re plenty of trails in the city for hikers who would like to be alone. In Pacific Spirit Regional Park, the great wilderness can make you forget you’re still in the city. Go for a sunset walk along the sandy beaches, wander around 12,000-year-old Camosun Bog.

  Kayak around the coastline

The view from the coast is wonderful, but from a kayak, the city takes on a different character. You can rent kayaks on Granville Island and at Jericho Beach, or even take to the waves with a guided tour. The guides are happy to point out seals, eagles and other wildlife.

  Bike the North Shore Mountains

If you prefer your mountain journeys on wheels rather than on foot, the rocky North Shore is also a place for mountain bikers. The trails at Cypress Mountain, Mount Seymour and Mount Fromme offer advanced adventures through old-growth forest.

  64. What can visitors do in Stanley Park?

  A. Visitors can take a boat with friends.

  B. Visitors can walk along the sandy beaches.

  C. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the countryside.

  D. Visitors can walk or cycle on separate paths.

  65. Which activity gives you the opportunity to see wildlife?

  A. Cycle the Vancouver seawall around Stanley Park. B. Hike Pacific Spirit Regional Park.

  C. Kayak around the coastline.

  D. Bike the North Shore Mountains.

  66. What’s the purpose of the passage?

  A. To describe the scenery of Vancouver.

  B. To show the advantages of taking outdoor actives.

  C. To talk about Vancouver’s climate and geography.

  D. To introduce the outdoor activities in Vancouver.

  D

Mark and his brother Jason both were looking at the shining new computer . Jason was determined not to go against their father’s wishes but Mark was more adventurous than his brother. He loved experimenting and his aim was to become a scientist like his father.

“Dad will be really mad if he finds out you’ve been playing with his new computer.” Jason said, “He told us not to touch it.”

“He won’t find out.” Mark said, “I’ll just have a quick look and shut it down.”

Mark had been scolded before for touching his father’s equipment. The computer burst into life and seconds later, the screen turned into colors, shifting and changing and then two big white words appeared in the center of the screen: “SPACE TRANSPORTER.”

“Yes!” Mark cried excitedly, “It’s a computer game. I knew it! Dad’s only been pretending to work. He’s really been playing games instead.” A new message appeared on the screen:

But his hand never reached the switch. A single beam of dazzling white light burst out of the computer screen, wrapping the boys in its glow (光芒), until they themselves seemed to be glowing. Then it died down just as suddenly as it had burst into life. And the boys were no longer there. On the screen, the letters changed.

“TRANSPORT SUCCESSFUL. DESTINATION: MARS. RETRIEVE DATE: 2025.”

  Sunday

  Sunny

Today, I felt very happy to participate in the social practice in the countryside, organized by our school, which gave me a deep impression.

This morning we gathered at the school gate happily, waiting for the school bus. Soon we were on the way to the suburb. On reaching our destination after a two-hour trip, we were warmly received by the farmers. Firstly the farmers with enthusiasm introduced great changes and development in their home town in the past few years and showed us around their farmhouses. What surprised and delighted us most was that the accommodation here was very good. At noon, we were provided a delicious lunch with the characteristic flavor. In the afternoon we were arranged to help the farmers pick vegetables and fruits, experiencing and enjoying the pleasure of the harvest.

Though the trip to the happy farmhouses was over , it left a permanent memory on me. I feel proud of the achievement which the farmers have made.
