"Cool" is a word with many meanings. Its old meaning is used to express a temperature that is a little bit cold. As the world has changed, the word has had many different meanings.
"Cool" can be used to express feelings of interest in almost anything. When you see a famous car in the street, maybe you will say "It's cool." You may think, "He's so cool," when you see your favorite footballer.
We all maximize (扩大) the meaning of "cool". You can use it instead of many words such as "new" or "surprising". Here's an interesting story we can use to show the way the word is used. A teacher asked her students to write about the waterfall (瀑布) they had visited. On one student's paper was just the one sentence, "It's so cool". Maybe he thought it was the best way to show what he saw and felt.
But the story also shows a scarcity (缺乏) of words. Without "cool", some people have no words to show the same meaning. So it is quite important to keep some credibility (可信性). Can you think of many other words that make your life as colorful as the word "cool"? I can. And I think they are also very cool.
We know that the word "cool" has _______.
A. only one meaning
B. no meanings
C. many different meanings
D. the same meaning
47. In the passage, the word "express" means"________".
A. see
B. show
C. know
D. feel
If you are ________ something, you may say, "It's cool."
A. interested in
B. angry about
C. afraid of
D. unhappy with
The writer takes an example to show he is _________ the way the word is used.
A. pleased with
B. strange to
C. worried about
D. careful with
In the passage, the writer suggests that the word "cool"_________.
A. can be used instead of many words
B. usually means something interesting
C. can make your life colorful
D. may not be as cool as it seems
C
Do you ever feel like you and your child are speaking two different languages? If so, you aren’t alone. Many parents find it hard to communicate (交流)with their child. Even adults who work with children every day —teachers or coaches —sometimes need some communication tips. Many times adults confuse communication with telling a child what to do. Telling a child to do his homework or get more sleep isn’t real communication. It’s important information that your child needs, but it lacks(缺少) an important part of communication. It’s lacking the two-way exchange of feelings and ideas, which is the point of true communication. Healthy communication is the key to helping your child develop a healthy personality and good relationships with you. It gives your child a chance to become a happy, safe, healthy person, no matter what happens. So you know it’s important, but how should you do it? Effective communication between parents and children is not always easy. Children and adults have different communication styles and different ways of responding in a conversation. In addition, time and place can determine how successful communication will be. Parents should make time to talk with their children in a quiet, unhurried way. It’s also important that parents should be ready to listen whenever their child wants to talk, even if it’s an inconvenient(不方便) time. The parents should be aware of their child’s facial expression and body language. Is your child nervous or uncomfortable —frowning(皱眉), drumming fingers, tapping(轻拍) a foot or looking at the clock? Or does your child seem relaxed? Is he or she smiling or looking at you in the eyes? Reading these signs will help you know how your child is feeling. 51. Which of the following belongs to real communication?
A. Telling children to return home early after school.
B. Reporting school results to parents.
C. Listening to what children say and giving a reply.
D. Answering the teacher’s questions in class. 52. The key to real communication is _______.
A. a proper time
B. various styles
C. a two-way exchange
D. good attitudes 53. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a factor(要点)affecting the
communication between adults and children?
A. Communication styles.
B. Different languages.
C. Different responding ways.
D. Wrong time and place. 54. How can parents know their child’s feeling when communicating with their
child?
A. By reading their child’s body language and facial expressions.
B. By making their child tell the truth.
C. By giving the information that their child needs.
D. By developing good relationships with their child. 55. Who is the passage probably written for?
A. Children.
B. Parents.
C. Teachers.
D. Scientists.
PART IV
TASKED-BASED GAP FILLING (5 scores)
Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram/Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information for the passage. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.
Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”! I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English. First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to find ways to make their vocabulary large enough. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that in speaking your aim is FLUENCY, NOT ACCURACY(准确). You want to get your message across to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing was necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive(反应性的) rather than proactive(主动的) language learners. Instead of actively taking opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

WRITING(15 scores)
Dear editor,
I am writing to you to ask for some guidance. I am a teenager in senior high school for over two months. I find it has many differences from my junior school. First, the subjects are more difficult, especially maths and physics. I feel I can not concentrate all my mind on my study in class and feel sleepy. Next, it is hard for me to get along well with my classmates and I don’t know how to make a new friend. The worst is that I am always worried and nervous when exams come.
What do you think I should do? Waiting for your suggestions!
Best wishes
Li Hua
