36 bodily processes, actions and behavior, and how this relates to what we do in our daily lives when we observe emotions in

  37 .

Bodily processes can be directly measured by

  38

of a polygraph(测谎仪). When a polygraph is skillfully used to

  39

how we react bodily with what we are

  40

, it is called a “ lie detector ”. Bodily processes can also be measured

41 . This is what we do when we observe someone blushing (脸红). However, we are not always

  42

of what bodily processes respond to.

Measuring action or behavior is the other way researchers assess the

  43

  .

44 , one measure of fear of snakes is how

  45

a person will go to the snake. Another procedure is to have a person

  46

how afraid he is, or how he feels, in this way, researchers have

  47

the so-called “fear thermometer” to assess a person’s fear.

  48

our everyday living, we do very much the same thing. Only not too

49 . We react to what a person does, what he says,

  50

he says it, and how he looks. Is he smiling? Is his voice trembling? We put all this

  51

together to infer what a person is feeling.

52 , we do not always act as we feel. Sometimes we do things that we don’t feel like doing.

  53

we say we feel one way and then we act another. Actors, for example, successfully learn to “make believe” emotions, or learn to

  54

  them. Thus we

  55

always tell what a person is feeling by what he says or by what he does.

  第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。A

I always avoid going on field investigations with the toxics (毒物)team, unless it’s absolutely necessary. It’s not that I mind the hard work, or am afraid of coming into contact with toxic substances. What I fear is quickly losing hope about the work I do.

However, doing field research with the toxics team, all I see and feel is filth—nothing else. Even if I close my eyes, I can smell the smell of food processing, rotting organic waste from paper mills and chemicals from clothing manufacturers.

One morning, I went to investigate a discharged pipe to document and collect samples of pollutants secretly being emitted by a textile mill. I had to work with the utmost secrecy in order to avoid being discovered by the textile mill.

I dipped a long measuring pole into the large polluting pipe to measure the volume of polluted water being emitted. But the surface of the water, covered in oil and filth, made me feel as if to vomit.

All of a sudden, I felt someone hit me on my back. It frightened me so much that I almost fell into the water. I grasped the pole and looked behind me to see an old man standing there. He asked: “Can you catch fish here?” I realized that he thought I was holding a fishing pole, so I kept calm and said: “Yes, I heard that there’s a kind of small fish living in this water, and it has medicinal benefits.”

The old man grew quite curious and replied: “That may be. If a fish can survive in water as dirty as this , it must have a lot of resistance. So it wouldn’t be too strange if such fish had medicinal benefits.”

It was clear he was just passing by, so I answered: “Yeah, survival of the fittest. Fish that adapt can survive, just like us humans.”

He kept talking to me and didn’t want to leave. He wanted to see whether or not I would catch the small fish with medicinal benefits.

  56. The text is mainly about____ .

  A. a research report about pollution

  B. an exciting experience of fishing

  C. an experience of doing research on pollution

  D. an unforgettable talk with an old man

  57. Which word can take place of the underlined word in the 2nd paragraph?

  A. fish

  B. textile

  C. water

  D. pollutants

  58. What is the writer of the text most probably?

  A. A newspaper reporter.

  B. A researcher about pollution.

  C. A fisherman.

  D. A worker of the textile mill.

  59. Why did the writer tell the old man he was fishing?

  A. Because he wanted to satisfy the old man’s curiosity

  B. Because the old man was interested in fishing too

  C. Because he did the research secretly

  D. Because the old man wanted to buy the fish

  60. We can infer from the last paragraph that

  .

  A. the old man had found out the secret

  B. the old man wanted to catch the fish by himself

  C. the writer would have to tell the old man the fact

  D. the old man was sent to watch over the writer

  B

Not everyone wants to take medications forever. In my research, people with diabetes (糖尿病) who eat a totally plant-based, low-fat diet will lose weight, reduce their cholesterol(胆固醇) and improve their blood sugar better than those on a portion (部分)

control diet. You can use diet to change the condition, but if you return to your old habits, it will come right back.

—Neal D. Barnard, MD, President, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

Diet and exercise have the biggest impact, and the best diet is high in fiber and low in what can be slowly changed into sugar. The American Diabetes Association recommends eating about 30 grams of fiber a day, but studies suggest that eating up to 50 grams provides significant benefits, because fiber lowers insulin(胰岛素)and cholesterol levels.

  —Dwight McKee, MD, Aptos, California

Being overweight is a main cause of type 2 diabetes. Exercising is the key to changing the condition. As you change your diet, aim to burn 300 calories a day through exercise. If you have to, work out twice a day if you can’t do it in one shot. And as you get fitter, gradually increase your exercise time.

—Joel Fuhrman, MD, Flemington, New Jersey

Diabetes is a disease, not a moral failing. Lifestyle changes can make it better, but that doesn’t necessarily mean horrible lifestyle choices cause it. If diet and exercise don’t help, we try a drug that doesn’t cause weight gain. If that still doesn’t work, we add more medications. Type 2 diabetes is generally a progressive disease. Even if you do everything right, you may need to increase your medicine over time.

—Robin Goland , MD, Columbia University Medical Center, New York

  61. The phrase “your old habits” in Paragraph 1 probably means _______.

  A. taking more medications to cure diabetes

  B. having a totally plant-based, low-fat diet

  C. having a portion control diet

  D. eating meat and sugar only

  62. What can we learn from the passage?

  A. The higher cholesterol level is, the more serious diabetes is.

  B. What can be slowly changed into sugar must be high in fiber.

  C. One tends to eat more fiber when he has diabetes.

  D. Diabetes will always last a short period of time.

  63. According to Joel Fuhrman, _______.

  A. eating less won’t lead to type 2 diabetes

  B. exercise plays an important role in treating diabetes

  C. changing diet is the best way to treat diabetes

  D. people with diabetes should exercise twice a day regularly

  64. Expert Robin Goland may probably think that _______.

Imagine that you live on a street where there are broken windows, graffiti painted on buildings, and waste on the ground. Would this environment lead to other acts of property damage or crime?

European researchers say the answer is yes. The researchers say they found strong evidence that signs of disorder can lead people to carry out criminal acts or bad behavior. The researchers work at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. They reported their findings in Science magazine last November. Their report is called The Spreading of Disorder.

The idea that observing disorder has an effect on people’s behavior is not new. In 1982, American researchers James Wilson and George Kelling wrote a report describing what they called the broken windows theory. They believed that signs of crime, such as broken windows in a building, led to other acts of crime.

In the 1990s, New York City officials started a campaign to remove signs of disorder like broken windows, graffiti markings, and rubbish. Soon, the rate of minor crimes in New York began to drop. Other cities around the world also began to use this crime-fighting method.

But the broken windows theory was also questioned. Experts said there was still no experimental evidence to prove that the drop in crime was a direct result of efforts to clean up city neighborhoods.

They said other influences could also have caused the drop in crime. Moreover, the broken windows theory did not fully examine the exact conditions of disorders that appeared to lead to crime.

The study from the Netherlands now provides the experimental information to support the broken windows theory.

  66. The underlined word “graffiti” in Paragraph 1 probably means _______.

  A. rude drawings

  B. formal displays

  C. public signs D. interesting advertisements

  67. Other cities followed New York’s example because _______.

  A. there was no crime in New York at that time

  B. there were fewer crimes in New York after the campaign was started

  C. the rate of minor crimes in New York fell to its lowest level ever

  D. the environment in New York was relatively clean

  68. Which of the following statements can NOT be inferred from the passage?

  A. European researchers agree that signs of disorder lead to crime.

  B. The broken windows theory has drawn many experts’ attention.

  C. Some researchers had already reported similar findings many years before.

  D. More and more cities will follow New York’s example.

  69. What can we know about the experts questioning the broken windows theory?

  A. They didn’t agree to take rubbish away from cities.

  B. They thought other influences contributed to the drop in crime.

  C. They thought cleaning up city neighborhoods was useless.

  D. They have written an article about questioning the theory.

  70. The author of this passage mainly wants to tell us that _______.

  A. some efforts should be made to punish those who commit a crime

  B. more evidence should be provided to support the theory

  C. signs of disorder can lead to criminal acts

  D. acts of property damage or crime are common

  D

Last winter I led a Bible study in Shreveport, Louisiana. We always invited non-church members to come and join us in the discussion. I met Terri, a young nurse. She had been struggling with all sorts of things, and it seemed that she needed a bit of spiritual guidance, so I invited her. But weeks passed, and she never came. “You should come, ”I told her. “I’m not sure if it’s the right place for me, ”she said.

One day I headed to a supermarket to pick up a few Christmas gifts. After fighting the holiday crowds and getting my things, I got back into my car and pulled out of the parking space. Something was in front of me. I got out to take a closer look. It was a shopping bag from Dillard’s department store—filled with a number of pairs of expensive-looking socks. I called up the store when I got home. They said no one had reported it. I gave them my number in case someone called to look for the bag. No one did.

A week later I was leading the Bible study when Terri walked in. She stayed very quietly and looked sad, just sitting and listening as the rest of us discussed the passage I'd read. At the end I asked if anyone had anything to share. “I’m sorry,” Terri said. “I’m not sure if I believe in the fate(命运). Nothing’s been going right for me. Work’s been tough; I’ve had problems in my family; I’m single for the holidays...and I can’t even shop for presents without something going wrong. ”

“What happened?” I asked. “Last week I bought a gift for my dad, and I lost it—a whole bag of socks.” she said. “Socks from Dillard’s?” I asked. She nodded. I smiled and said, “I think you’ve come to the right place. ”

  71. We can learn from the passage that the author was probably _______.

  A. a non-church member who liked reading the Bible

  B. a nurse who was in charge of spiritual guidance

  C. a church member who was in charge of the Bible study

  D. a person who cared nothing about others living around her

  72. Why did the author advise Terri to join them?

  A. Because Terri was a single woman and suffered a lot.

  B. Because the author thought Terri needed spiritual guidance.

  C. Because Terri was a church member and had to join them.

  D. Because the author wanted Terri to see how she led the Bible study.

  73. At first Terri never came to the Bible study because _______.

  A. she had a great deal of work to deal with

  B. she doubted whether it would help her or not

  C. her husband didn’t allow her to do so

  D. she met with family problems and was in low spirits

  74. We can infer from the passage that _______.

  A. Terri often went shopping with the author

  B. Terri would never go to the church

  C. everything was going right for Terri

  D. Terri would get the bag she had lost

  75. What’s the best title for the passage?

  A. A story about Terri .

  B. A sad woman—Terri .

  C. How to join a Bible study group . D. Hope regained thanks to a shopping bag .
