第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
When Frida Kahlo’s paintings were on show in London, a poet described her paintings as “ a ribbon (丝带)around a bomb”. Such comments seem to suggest Kahlo had a big influence on the art world of her time. Sadly, she is actually a much bigger name today than she was during her time.
Born in 1907 in a village near Mexico City , Kahlo suffered from polio(小儿麻痹症)at the age of seven. Her spine (脊柱)becme bent as she grew older. Then, in 1925, her back was broken in several places in a school-bus accident. Throughout the rest of her life, the artist had many operations, but nothing was able to cure the terrible pain in her back. However, the accident had an unexpected side effect. While lying in her bed recovering, Kahlo taught herself to paint.
In 1929, she got married to Diego Rivera, another famous Mexican artist. Rivera’s strong influences on Kahlo’s style can be seen in her early works, but her later works from the 1940s, known today as her best works, show less influence from her husband.
Unfortunately, her works did not attract much attention in the 1930s and1940s, even in her home country. Her first one-woman show in Mexico was not held until 1953. For more than a decade after her death in 1954, Kahlo’s works remained largely unnoticed by the world, but in the 1970s her works began to gain international fame at last.
51. What does the phrase “a much bigger name” in paragraph 1 most nearly mean?
A. a much more famous person
B. a far more gifted artist
C. a much stronger person
D. a far better artist
52. The terrible pain Kahlo suffered was caused by
.
A. polio
B. back injuries
C. her bent spin
D. the operations she had
53. Kahlo’s style had become increasingly independent since the
.
A. 1940s
B. 1930s
C. 1950s
D. 1970s
54. What is author’s attitude toward Kahlo?
A. Devotion
B. Worry
C. Sympathy
D. Encouragement

Why is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys?
The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green is a color that represents the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs. Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against evils(灾祸).
People’s choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies’ reactions (反应)toward them. Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically. People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomach aches.
Red can cause a person’s blood pressure to rise and increase people’s appetites(食欲). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. Similarly, many commercial websites will have a red “Buy Now” button because red is a color that easily catches a person’s eye.
Blue is another calming color. Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So if you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can help.
The next time you are deciding on what to wear or what color to decorate your room, think about the color carefully.
55. Muslims regard green as a symbol of heaven mainly because of their
A. personal experiences
B. commercial purposes
C. cultural values
D. physical reactions to the color
56. Why will many commercial websites have a red “Buy Now” button?

B. To increase people’s appetites.
C. To relax people physically.
D. To cause a person’s blood pressure to rise.
57. What color might help lose weight according to the text?

The rising costs of health care have become a problem for many countries in the world. To deal with this problem, it is recommended that a big part of the government’s health budget(预算)be used for health education and disease prevention instead of treatment. Actually, many kinds of diseases are preventable in many ways and preventing a disease is usually much cheaper than treating it. For example, people could avoid catching a cold if they dressed warmly when the weather starts getting cold. But many people get sick because they fail to do so, and have to spend money seeing a doctor.
Daily habits like eating more healthy food would have kept millions of families from becoming bankrupt if the patients had taken measures for early prevention. For instance, keeping a balanced diet, such as not consuming too much animal fat and ensuring a steady intake of vegetables and fruits, seems to be quite important.
One very effective and costless way of prevention is regular exercise, which is necessary for a healthy mind and body. Regular exercise, such as running, walking, and playing sports is a good way to make people feel better or reduce stress.
In addition, health education plays a key role in improving people’s health. By giving people more information about health, countries could help people understand the importance of disease prevention and ways to achieve it. For example, knowing one’s family medical history is an effective way to help keep
healthy. Information about health problems among close relatives will make them aware of what they should do to prevent certain diseases through lifestyle changes, which will work before it is too late.
However, stressing disease prevention does not mean medical treatment is unimportant. After all, prevention and treatment are just two different means toward the same effect. In conclusion, we could save money on health care and treat patients more successfully if our country spends more money on health prevention and education.

Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college.
King’s Art Centre
A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists.
You could attend a class teaching you how to ‘learn from the masters’ or get more creative with paint – free of charge.
The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee.
the Botanic Garden
The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.
The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.
Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.
The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.
Byron’s Pool
Many stories surround Lord Byron’s time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and drunkenness”. However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I’m not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his rooms. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.
It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron’s Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don’t trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf --- over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.
63. As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for
.
A. learning life drawing
B. working with local artists
C. attending the masters’ class
D. seeing an exhibition
64. “Torch Aloe” and “Venus Flytrap” are
.
A. common insects
B. rarely-seen snakes
C. impressive plants
D. wildlife-enthusiasts
65. We can infer from the passage that Byron seemed
.
A. to fear pet bears
B. to finish university in 1805
C. to be a heavy drinker
D. to like walking
66. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A way to become creative in art.
B. Some places for weekend break.
C. The colorful life in the countryside.
D. Unknown stories of Cambridge University.

The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphones, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic (怀旧的)skill. However, while today’s educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful---both in school and in life.
Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it’s important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.
Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks---both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2009, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.
In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write. “Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.” Berninger said.
Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then transcribe(转换) “those words in the mind into written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in the “mind’s eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Berninger, but also to spot(发现) spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time.
“In our computer age, some people believe that we don’t have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,” she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won’t have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.”
67. What makes writing by hand a thing of the past?
A. The absence of blackboard in classroom.
B. The lack of practice in handwriting.
C. The use of new technologies in teaching.
D. The popular use of smartphones.
68. Berninger’s study published in 2009
.
A. indicated that students prefer to write with a pen and paper.
B. focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer.
C. found that good essays are made up of long sentences.
D. discussed the importance of writing speed.
69. Which of the following best shows the role of spelling?
A. Spelling improves one’s memory of words.
B. Spelling slows down finding exact words to express ideas.
C. Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas.
D. Spelling ability is closely related to writing ability.
70. What conclusion could be drawn from the passage?
A. Handwriting still has a place in today’s classrooms.
B. Spell checks can take the place of spelling teaching.
C. Computers can help people with their choice of words.
D. Functional spelling ability develops fast in the fifth grade.

Dear editor,
I’m a senior high school student named Li Hua. Nowadays smartphones are popular with students, with which they can surf the internet, watch videos, listen to music, read e-books and also download learning materials. Actually, smartphones have become part of students’ life.
Although smartphones have brought great convenience to study, they have also caused a lot of trouble. What annoys teachers most is that some students spend plenty of time on smartphones in class listening to music, watching videos, even playing video games.
In my opinion, students should be instructed to use smartphones properly. What’s more, there must be a rule to forbid the use of smartphones in class.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
