  A

In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar (熟悉) with their school.

Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman (新生) speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.

One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining in an activity, students can find new friendships and improve their chances in future college applications (申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join in them.

My friend Paul will never forget his first chemistry teacher. He was a little man with thick glasses, but he had a strange way of making his classes lively and interesting . And his lessons were not easily forgotten.

Paul remembers one of his first lessons from this teacher. After the students were all in the chemistry lab, the teacher brought out three bottles. One was filled with petrol, one with castor oil and one with vinegar. “Now watch carefully, " said the teacher.

He then filled a cup with some of the petrol, some of the castor oil and some of the vinegar. As the students watched him quietly, he mixed the three together. After that, he held up one of his fingers and showed it to the class. He then dipped it into the cup. After a few seconds he took his finger out. "Now watch" he said. " Remember, you must do everything as I do."

As summertime begins in Britain, people begin to have a strong desire to go outside to eat. British people, especially those with children, love to have a picnic whenever the weather is good enough. It’s a great way to spend a sunny afternoon.

Even in the centre of London, on a sunny day, the parks are full of office workers eating their lunch outside on the grass. That might be a pretty basic picnic — a shop-bought sandwich and a bottle of water.

But if people are planning a picnic on a beach or at a park, they would probably take a bag with a whole variety of home-made sandwiches, snacks, cakes, fruit and soft drinks. They might have a picnic rug to sit on, and paper plates and cups. Another item that is useful is a Thermos (保温瓶) which keeps hot drinks like tea or coffee hot. University students enjoy having picnics, and usually take along some kind of sports equipment, such as a Frisbee (飞盘) or a ball in order to burn off some energy after lunch. British student picnics usually involve drinking beer or wine too!

Of course, you can never rely on the British summer weather, so taking an umbrella along might be a good idea just in case!

  64. According to the text what do people usually take for a planned picnic in England?

  A. Sandwiches and water.

  B. Sandwiches and vegetables.

  C. Food, fruits and soft drinks.

  D. Vegetables and fruits.

  65. Which of the following statements is NOT mentioned in the text?

A boy was born to a couple after eleven years of marriage. They were a loving couple and loved the boy very much. When the boy was around two years old, one morning the husband saw a medicine bottle open. He was late for office so he asked his wife to cap the bottle and put it back into the cupboard in the bathroom. However, his wife, busy in the kitchen, totally forgot the matter.

The boy saw the bottle and playfully went to the bottle fascinated by its color and drank it all. It happened to contain a kind of medicine with poisonous and side effects. When the child broke down, the mother hurriedly took him to the hospital. But he finally died. The mother was shocked. She was terrified how she was going to face her husband.

When the desperate father came to the hospital and saw the dead child, he looked at his wife and voiced just five words. The husband just said, “I am with you, Darling”. The husband's totally unexpected reaction is a positive behavior. The child is dead. He can never be brought back to life. There is no point in finding fault with the mother. Besides, if only he had taken time to keep the bottle away, this would not have happened. No one is to be blame. She had also lost her only child. What she needed at that moment was comfort and sympathy from the husband. That is just what he gave her.

If everyone can look at life with this kind of viewpoint, there would be much fewer problems in the world. Take off all your jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness, and fears and you will find things are actually not as difficult as you think. Sometimes we spend time asking who is responsible or whom to blame, whether in a relationship, in a job or with the people we know. By this way we miss out some warmth in human relationship.

  67. The uncapped medical bottle was not put back into the cupboard because ________.

  A. the husband was careless

  B. It appeared like a nice drink.

  C. It was broken by the child.

  D. It was kept in the kitchen.

  69. The husband's attitude towards his wife can be described as________.

  A. optimistic

  B. confident

  C. considerate

  D. generous

  70. What does the writer intend to tell us about life?

  A. Let go the negative side and we can enjoy life.

  B. It is always useless finding who is responsible.

  C. Think of nothing and life will be easy.
