  Living in the City

Living in the city has both advantages and disadvantages.

It is often easier to find jobs. There are always many choices of public transport. Besides, there are a lot of interesting things to do and places to see. You can eat in good restaurants, visit museums, go to cinemas and go to parks whenever you want to relax.

However, living in the city is often very expensive. You must find a well-paid job; otherwise, you will not be able to afford the things you will do. What’s more, the city is always crowded, noisy and dirty. It is very difficult to find a good place where people can enjoy peace and fresh air as in the countryside.

  Text 1

W: When will Flight A391 leave?

M: It leaves at 8:30, but you should check in half an hour ahead of time.

  Text 2

W: Peter says you are mad about cars, Paul.

M: I have to be. I make my living by selling them.

  Text 3

M: I nearly missed it this morning. I got to the corner just in time.

W: You are lucky. These drivers always leave on time since it takes so long to cross the city.

  Text 4

W: Where will you and your family go and spend your summer vacation?

M: We are arranging for a holiday to Europe. We will stay in Italy for three days, France for five weeks, Switzerland for two days.

  Text 5

W: Why are you in such a hurry?

M: I’m going to the hospital.

  W: What’s the trouble?

M: I cough day and night.

W: Why do you cough so much?

M: Perhaps I smoke too much.

  Text 6

M: Do you have any tables?

W: Yes, we’ve got plenty of tables in stock. Will you have a look at this one?

M: It’s a nice color, and the style is not bad, but it is a bit too small.

  W: How about this one?

M: Mm. I like it. How much is it?

  W: Seven dollars.

M: OK. Here is the money. Could you deliver this to my house?

W: Of course, we are always at your service.

M: Here is my name card. Thanks.

  W: You are welcome.

  Text 7

  M: Hi, Jane.

W: Hi. How are you getting on?

M: Oh, not bad. Say, I was just wondering whether you’d like to go swimming with me this Saturday afternoon.

  W: Oh, I’d like to. But I’m afraid I can’t. I’ll have to attend a meeting.

  M: Oh, that’s too bad.

W: But I’ll be free in the evening.

M: Shall we go to dance?

  W: That’s a good idea.

M: Great. What about having supper first?

W: Why not? Where shall I meet you?

M: Why not let me pick you up at your house?

  W: OK. What time?

  M: Seven o’clock. OK?

W: Fine. Well, see you then.

  Text 8

M: Hey, Jane, let’s go to the movie. You’ve been working on these bills for hours.

  W: It’s impossible.

  M: Why?

W: We can’t afford to go out. Look at the bills yourself. Everything I say to you goes in one ear and out the other.

M: All right. I’ve been trying to cut down on our expenses lately. I’ve been turning off the lights when I leave the room. I’ve been keeping track of all our phone bills…

W: Oh. Look at this telephone bill! It’s 89 dollars! That’s impossible! Have you been making calls to Edison?

M: Yes. I did make one call there last month.

  W; One?

  M: Yes, just one.

W: Well, they charged us for 5 calls.

M: Wait a minute. Let me take a look. You know, they made a mistake last month, too, and also the month before that.

W: I’m going to call them and really give them a piece of my mind.

  Text 9

W: You know, Paul, I really like my old community. But I’ve got a new job far away from there. So I have to move here.

M: It’ll be OK. You’ll find a nicer place here.

W: I’m not sure. This is a great place to live. It’s got a lot of good shops, and the people are very friendly. It’s got some excellent cafes, too.

  M: Any good restaurant?

W: There is a restaurant, but it’s terrible. I never eat there. The best thing is the sports center near my flat.

M: Oh, I didn’t know you like sports.

W: yeah. I play table tennis there. One bad thing is all the cars. Everybody uses the big car park next to the sports centre. So my roads have too many cars on them. Another problem is that there isn’t a cinema. It’s not a big problem because there are good buses, so I can go to the cinema in the city centre.

M: I’m sure you’ll find a good place. Take it easy.

  Text 10

When you are invited to a meal in an American home, it will probably be informal. The dishes are usually served family style, so everyone passes the food to one another. Americans find silence uncomfortable, so you can expect a casual talk at the dinner table.

When you are invited, you can ask if you may bring something for the meal. If the hostess refuses, do not take a dish. That would be impolite. Giving a gift is usually expected in some countries and regarded as social nicety. You can take candy, flowers or a small gift from your country. But you don’t have to. Americans don’t expect you to bring anything.

Though punctuality is highly valued in many cultures, you’ll be thought considerate if you arrive a few minutes late. Do not arrive early. The hostess needs the last minutes to get everything ready. But if you are going to be more than 15 minutes late, call to let the hostess know.

When you arrive, you don’t need to take off your shoes. Most Americans wear their shoes in their homes. Just make yourself at home as most Americans treat guests like family.
