三、阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
It’s happened to me a few times, but two instances really stand out.
A few years ago, I was dining out with a person who kept going on and on about himself, completely unaware of the fact that I was sitting there in misery(痛苦). It wasn’t his company that disappointed me. I was recovering from a bad grade in my study. I could have collapsed(崩溃) in tears right there at the table.
When we picked up the check, the waitress said, “Your meal was already paid for.” My friend and I didn’t have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man coming in out of the corner of my eye. He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar, had a glass of wine, stayed for maybe ten minutes, and then left. The waitress said, “Yes, the gentleman who was in here a while ago paid for you.”
Just last year, I was running a half-marathon. With just 0.1 miles to go, I was out of gas. Runners call it “hitting the wall”; I thought I couldn’t move another muscle. Out of nowhere, a teenager jogs up next to me and says, “What’s your name, sweetie? Jennifer? Okay, Jennifer, let’s go! Come on! It is just around the corner! You can do it!” And he ran with me until I picked up my pace. I found him at the finish line to thank him for the encouragement only to learn he wasn’t even supposed to be in the race that day. He was running in place of someone else.
I still shake my head when I think of these momentary angels that came to me at my point of need. Do you have any experiences like this?
26. Why did the author say she was in misery?
A. Because she got into trouble with her friend.
B. Because she couldn’t enjoy her meal quietly.
C. Because her friend complained so much.
D. Because she was doing poorly in her study.
27. What do you think of the man paying for the meal?
A. He was generous and warm-hearted.

D. He liked making fun of others.
28. How did the teenager help the author?
A. He gave the author a glass of water.
B. He ran following the author.
C. He gave the author a life.

29. We can infer from the last paragraph that __________.
A. the author still can’t believe her experience today
B. the author feels grateful for the help she received
C. the author thinks everyone is an angel
D. the author often helps those in need
30. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

B
The earthquake that shook Japan on March 11, 2011 was the strongest earthquake in that country’s recorded history and the fourth strongest recorded on earth since 1900. It cracked open the ground, knocked people off their feet, and made tall buildings move. Then things got even worse.
It created huge waves called a tsunami (海啸). Walls of water as tall as 30 feet flooded into the coast and swept six miles inland, wiping out everything in the way.
Many people were separated from their pets. Many animal lovers went out of their way to help pets in need after the tsunami. And some pets helped their owners, too.
When Kamata heard the tsunami alert (警报), he decided to visit his neighbours to warn them of the coming danger. He put his dog, Shane, in the yard so they could leave as soon as he returned. But later, as he headed home, the tsunami flooded into the city, destroying his path. Kamata was forced to run to higher ground, to a school that served as a shelter. He feared he would never see Shane again.
Six hours later, Kamata heard that a dog was waiting outside the school. He went to look: It’s Shane! The dog swam through the tsunami and found Kamata, even though Shane had never been to the school.
After the huge earthquake ended, 83-year-old Tami Akanuma thought that she and her small dog, Babu, were safe. But Babu was anything but calm. She cried and walked worriedly, as if really wanting to go for a walk. That’s strange, since Babu didn’t like taking walks. But Akanuma took her out.
Outside, Babu headed up a hill instead of toward their normal route near the water. When Akanuma slowed down, the little dog pulled her higher. Once they reached the hilltop, Akanuma looked back and was surprised: The path they had taken was flooded and her home had been destroyed by fast-flowing water. Little Babu helped his owner escape in time.
31. What are the first two paragraphs about?
A. A brief introduction to the earthquake.
B. The strongest earthquake in history
C. The influence of the tsunami
D. The cause of the tsunami.
32. Why did Kamata think he would never see Shane again?
A. He couldn’t go back home to take Shane.
B. He was afraid Shane had been killed by the tsunami.
C. He thought Shane had been taken away by his neighbour.
D. He feared Shane didn’t know he was at the shelter then.
33. Why did Kamata run to a school?
A. The road to his home had been destroyed by water.
B. The school was the nearest place to him.
C. He went there to look for Shane.
D. He didn’t want to go home then.
34. Which of the following best describes Shane?

Once there was a man who liked to eat mangoes. One day he decided to get the sweetest mango from the very top of the tree. Mangoes which are exposed to the sun the most are the sweetest.
So he climbed up to the top, where the branches were thin. He managed to pick up a few sweet reddish fruits, but in an attempt to climb down, he slipped and started falling towards the ground. Fortunately, he caught the branch as he was falling and remained helplessly hanging on the tree. Then he started to call nearby villagers for help. They immediately came with a ladder and sticks, but could do little to help him.
Then after some time one calm and thoughtful person arrived - a well-known sage(贤人who lived in a simple hut nearby. People were very curious to see what he would do, as he was famous in solving many people’s problems in the area and sometimes very complicated ones.

The sage was silent. Then he took another stone and threw it at the man. The man was very angry: “If I could just come down, I would show you!”
That’s what everybody wanted - that he came down. But how? Now everybody was tense, as to what would happen next! Some wanted to chastise the sage, but they didn’t. The sage picked another stone and threw it again at the man, even more forcefully. Now the man on the tree was enraged and developed a great determination to come down and take revenge.(复仇)
He then used all his skill and strength and somehow reached the branches which were safe to start going down. And he made it! Everybody was amazed.
However, the rescued man found the sage gone. He stood there, realizing that the man really saved him because he induced(引诱)him to try his best and save himself.
