A
Bears and humans often meet in National Parks. Although campers and hikers are warned not to feed the bears, many people ignore these warnings and feed the beasts anyway. When bears are used to people’s food, problems soon arise.
Bears often develop clever strategies for getting people to let go their food supplies. More often than not, an unsuspecting hiker has taken off his or her pack for a rest only to have a bear charge out of the woods, grab the pack and quickly disappear into the underbrush with it. Hanging the pack on a tree branch won’t help. Bears have been known to climb up, jump off, and catch the pack on the way down. One mother bear stretched up with her baby on her shoulders to reach a pack stored on a pole. Many bears threaten people into giving up their supplies. Although a bear is unlikely to attack a person and would probably run away if screamed at, few people are willing to do so. Most people drop the pack and run the other way. This, of course, delights the bear. In some places, the Park Service installed some metal barrels with lids to help campers keep their supplies safe from bears. Although the bears were unable to open these containers, the effort was less than successful. Most campers, unable to tell the metal drums from rubbish cans, never used them for the intended purpose.

.
A. bears were clever enough to get the food in them
B. they were left open in the open air
C. people were not sure of their use

Towards the end of Middle English, a sudden change in pronunciation started, with vowels being pronounced shorter and shorter. From the 16th century the British had contact with people from around the world. This means that many new words and phrases entered the language. The invention of printing also meant that there was a common language in print. Books became cheaper and more people learned to read. Spelling and grammar became fixed and the dialect (方言)of London became the standard. In 1604, the first English dictionary was published.
The numbers of words in Early Modern English and Late Modern English differ. Late Modern English has a lot more words because of two main factors: firstly, the Industrial Revolution created a need for new words; secondly, the British Empire covered one quarter of the earth’s surface, and the English language took in foreign words from many countries.
From around 1600, the English colonization(殖民地化)of North America resulted in the creation of American English. Some English pronunciation and words froze when they reached America. In some ways, American English is more like the English of Shakespeare than modern British English. Some expressions that the British call “ Americanisms” are in fact original (原先的)British expressions that were preserved (保存) in the colonies but were lost in Britain. Spanish also had an influence on American English, with words like canyon, ranch, stampede and vigilante being examples of Spanish words that entered English. French words and West African words also influenced American English.
Today, American English is the most influential(有影响力的). But there are many other kinds of English around the world, including Australian English, New Zealand English, Canadian English, South African English , Indian English and Caribbean English. They have differences.
63. What can we know from Paragraph 1?
A. The dialect of London became the standard in the year 1604.
B. Vowels were pronounced longer towards the end of Middle English
C. The first English dictionary was published in the early 17th century.
D. Many new words entered English because many people moved to Britain.
64. From Paragraph 2, we know that the Industrial Revolution __________.
A. required spelling and grammar to be fixed
B. required a greater number of English words
C. caused many old English words to be useless
D. led to the English colonization of North America.
65. The underlined word “froze” in Paragraph 3 shows that some English words in America___________.
A. became longer
B. greatly changed
C. a little changed
D. stayed as they were
66. What will the paragraph following this passage most probably discuss?
A. The development of Modern English
B. How the English vocabulary became larger
C. Differences among the different kinds of English
D. Differences between Middle English and Modern English
D
The quality of drinking water in Shanghai will meet European Union standard by 2010 and, a decade later, citizens in Shanghai will drink the best water in the world.
These were the goals set out by the Shanghai Water Authority. With the city’s population expected to increase only slightly and the economy to boom by 2020, Chen Yin, and official with the water authority, said Shanghai’s water consumption will not increase from its present amount.
Zhang Yue, director of the Urban Construction Division under the Ministry of Construction, said, “Shanghai is the first city in the country to publicize these ambitions. They will not be easy to achieve.”
He said water saving will help keep the sustainable development of China’s economy.
Saving one cubic meter of water means saving the city’s infrastructure(基础设施)costs by 10,000 Yuan. Last year, Shanghai saved 300 million cubic meters of water either from readjustment of industrial structure or the employment of new technology.
“The aim is to arouse public awareness of the seriousness of water shortages,” Chen said. “The abundant surface water and amount of rain of the city are so misleading that they result in improper use of water.”
Shanghai lacks drinkable water. The Huangpu River, which supplies 80 percent of the city’s drinkable water, is nearing exhaustion.
The city, therefore, has been exploring new sources from the Yangtze River and growing forests along it to conserve quality water.
Besides penning regulations, the authority is popularizing technology among the public to efficiently cut the amount of water used.
At present, the city has 600,000 family toilets, each using 13 liters of water per flush. These are to be renovated(整修)to use only 9 liters of water per flush.
The authority is renovating the first 200 toilets for households – at a cost of 40 Yuan each.
In three years, all the toilets will be renovated, which saves the city nearly 15 million Yuan every year in water conservation.
Another task the city is engaged in is the treatment of sewage(污水)to improve the water environment.
At present the city can only treat 44 percent of its daily 5.04 million tons of waste water. To meet the total demand, 27 more sewage treatment factories are to be established with an estimated investment of 18 billion Yuan.
67. According to the passage, some people have the wrong opinion of using water because_______.
A. the renovating of family toilets will save plenty of water
B. about half of waste water has been treated already
C. advanced technology makes people use water as much as possible
D. there is plenty surface water and large amount of rain at present
68. The authority is renovating the first 200 toilets for households to
.
A. make people’s living more convenient
B. improve people’s living standards
C. ease employment pressure
D. meet the total demand of water
69. Which group of measures are all mentioned in the passage to save water?
a. improve drinking water quality
b. change some industrial structure
c. introduce or use some new technology
d. speed the economic development of Shanghai
e. renovate some family toilets
f. build more sewage treatment factories
A. a, b, c, d
B. b, c, e, f
C. b, c, d, e
D. a, b, e, f
70. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. the boom of economy will need a larger amount of water in the future
B. citizens today in Shanghai drink the best quality of water in the world
C. not everyone today in Shanghai is aware of water shortage
D. all the family toilets will be renovated to save water within 3 years
第Ⅱ卷(共35分)
第一节: 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
注意:每个空格只填1个单词。
Congratulations! You are about to start a multi-faceted(多面的) journey of exploration. You are about to enter high school as a freshman. And here are some tips on how to start a new year at a new school.
As a high school freshman, choose courses that suit you. I encourage you to take a few courses with the title “Honors”, because they are meant to be challenging and intellectually exciting. If you are hungering for knowledge, see if you can take Advanced Placement (AP) course(大学预修课)---courses that may allow students to earn college credit(学分) for performing satisfactorily in the AP exams held nationally every May. AP classes such as AP Environmental Science and AP Human Geography are well-known for being easy, so taking either of them would be a perfect way of getting yourself into the AP program deeply.
Try to find a balance between in-school activities and out-of-school activities. An imbalance will surely cause you to be stressed. If you love sports, consider trying out for the various sports teams your school offers. Exercise is a great way to stay in shape, learn proper time management, gain new friendships, and keep your mind away from school day stress. Also consider joining your school’s band or some other clubs your school offers. Most importantly, be a part of activities that you are fond of.
If you’re a high achieving student, you’re probably asking yourself, “What should I do to get into a top college?” The truth is that when most colleges judge your college application, they don’t focus on your freshman year grades or extracurricular activities. Freshman year of high school is supposed to be a time of exploration—a time to find out your favorites and to develop them in the future. However, the method to apply to (申请)colleges is sometimes confusing, so you would benefit yourself by at least knowing the types of standardized tests you need to take before applying to college. The best resource for this is “The College Board”, the company that creates the college entrance exams you will take in the future.
Your high school experiences will undoubtedly be very important to you. It is the last step before you begin your life as an adult. Freshman year of high school is the time to make your interests and activities to fit who you are. As a freshman, challenge yourself in and out of classroom. Stay positive, work hard and remember to have fun!
