America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon. They don’t feel hurt. If the same two people meet again, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand .Friendships between us develop more slowly but may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)deeply into both families.
There is another difficult point for us to understand. Although Americans treat friends warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to them if it requires a great deal of time. But in China, we are usually generous with our time. We, as hosts, will appear at an airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take a day off from our work to act as guides to our friends. It is opposite in America. Americans cannot manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans. They will probably expect the visitors to get themselves from the airport to the hotels. And they expect the visitors will phone them from there. Once the visitors arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.
For Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to restaurants, except for business matters. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. So accept their hospitality(好客)at home and enjoy your visit in America!

43. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.
A. warmly welcomed at the airport B. offered a ride to his home
C. treated hospitably at his home D. treated to dinner in a restaurant
44. A suitable title for this passage would probably be “______”.
A. Friendship between Chinese B. Friendships between Americans
C. American’s hospitality D. Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendships

A while ago, when I was a young 25-year-old, I travelled across the United States on a journey to make a film.
During this trip, I ended up in Seattle where I met Laddie McCrea. Laddie was a hobo(流浪汉). He was about 60-70 years old. Laddie had shoulder length white hair covered with dirty things from the previous night’s bedding. His clothes were worn out and gave off a smell of alcohol and rubbish.
When I first met Laddie, he was standing on a busy downtown Seattle sidewalk. He greeted every passer-by with a smile, a pleasant greeting and an extended palm(伸出的手掌). Each day, people were rushing past Laddie---either unaware of his existence or avoiding him---a smelly, begging hobo.
I found Laddie to be an excellent character for my movie, so I paid him to allow me to stand in the background and film him. I spent three days hidden among the crowd, filming Laddie. Most of the time he didn’t know my existence. Each day he stood in a busy section of town greeting the world with a smile and an extended palm---just earning enough change for the evening’s night cap(夜酒).
One special day, as I watched from a bench off in the distance, a young girl, around 6 or 7, with a pretty dress and her hair in a ponytail, approached Laddie from behind and pulled on his shirt. Laddie turned to the girl, who then reached up and handed him something. At that, Laddie showed his happiness and reached in his pocket, gave her something and the girl ran back to her parents excitedly showing them what she had received.
I was so curious about the exchange that I was eager to go immediately to Laddie and ask him what took place, but in order to get honest shots, I knew I couldn’t make my presence known. Later that afternoon when I finished my shoot, I spent some time with Laddie and asked about the event.
Laddie replied: “The little girl came to me and gave me a quarter, so I have her two quarters in return because I wanted to show her that when you are generous, you will receive more than you give.
45. What could the writer’s job be?
A. A film director (导演) B. A tour guide
C. A journalist (记者)
D. A charity(慈善) worker
46. Which of the following is TRUE about Laddie according to the article?
A. He had a habit of writing in journals.
B. He was an old man who was fond of drinking and smoking.
C. He enjoyed his life because he earned quite a lot from begging.
D. He smiled to passers-by even though most of them ignored him.
47. What happened between the girl and Laddie?
A. Laddie gave the girl more money back, hoping to make her feel good about giving
B. The girl’s parents persuaded her to give a quarter to Laddie.
C. Laddie gave the girl two quarters and a talk on the value of sharing
D. Knowing he was being filmed, Laddie gave the girl more money.
48. The underlined word “generous” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.
A. polite B. giving C. cheerful D. curious

Have you ever thought about why traveling is important? It may seem obvious, but a good trip introduces you to a “new world”. Geography matters: where you are going plays a huge role in how you think.
About six months after I moved to China, I got the chance to travel with a group of friends to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. This trip was great fun: I got to swim, cycle and stay in tree houses in the jungle. But more importantly, this trip was meaningful.
All of these three countries were bombed (轰炸) by the US military (军队) during the conflict (冲突) with the North Vietnamese, the Vietnam War. As someone with strong anti-war (反战) opinions, I wanted to learn how the people of this area remember the war. I was not disappointed.the Vietnam War Remnants Museum, which has the largest collection of anti-facts from the Vietnam War. One exhibit is especially memorable. It is full of photos and artwork showing the effects of Agent Orange, a chemical weapon used by the US military against the land and population of Vietnam.
The aim of the Agent Orange campaign (行动) was to destroy plant life to make it more difficult for North Vietnamese fighters to hide behind trees. But ordinary Vietnamese were hurt the most. I had tears in my eyes as I looked around the exhibit.
Another time during our trip, my friends and I were arriving in a town in Cambodia on an overnight bus. As we got off the bus, taxi drivers came over offering rides. One of them asked me, “Where are you from, man?” I replied, “America!” And he said, “Ahh…the place where they make the bombs!” He laughed. I didn’t.
Traveling offers perspective(洞察力). There are few things more important than that.

A. tell readers what makes a trip a good one.
B. encourage readers to travel more.
C. get readers interested in his trip.
D. make readers wonder why geography matters.

B. It was used by the US military to hurt ordinary Vietnamese.
C. The writer felt sad and sorry for what it put local people through.
D. It was a special type of gun that was especially designed to kill plants.
51. What can we infer is the reason that the writer didn’t laugh in the situation described in the second-to-last paragraph?
A. He didn’t understand the driver’s joke.
B. He thought the driver was wrong in thinking of America that way.
C. He felt angry because the driver was blaming his motherland.
D. He felt ashamed that his country’s bombs had hurt other countries’ people.
52. In what way did the writer think his trip to the three countries was meaningful?
A. It brought him to a different part of the world.
B. It taught him how people live in those countries.
C. It made him think of what changes he should make in his life.
D. It helped him see how people in other countries view American wars.
D
Do your parents smoke? Where do they smoke – outside, at work or at home when you are around?
According to a survey published in the journal Academic Pediatrics, an alarming number of US parents are still risking their children’s lives by smoking in front of them. Half of all children aged 6 to 19, even those with asthma (哮喘), have been exposed to second-hand smoke in the country, reported Reuters.
“It’s well known that smoking kills, but many smokers still don’t realize the damage their smoke causes to those around them,” Dame Sally, Chief Medical Officer for England, was quoted by the Independent as saying.
Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, hundreds of which are poisonous. About 70 of them can cause cancer, not to mention other diseases, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
What’s most scary is that there is no safe level of contact with second-hand smoke---even “low-level” exposure can be harmful to one’s health. And “low-level” means when a parent or family member smokes in another room or even outside.
While second-hand smoke can be harmful to people of all ages, children face a greater risk than adults: they have smaller lungs; they breathe more quickly; and they have less developed immune(免疫的) systems.
Also, young children have little control over their surroundings. Babies can’t move to another room because the air is smoky. They depend on the adults in their lives to make sure that their environments are safe.
Recent years have seen second-hand smoke exposure drop---but for adults rather than kids, because policies have been started around the world to ban smoking in public places such as offices, bars and restaurants. However, “Children tend to be exposed to second-hand smoke in homes and cars, and these places are not included in most laws and policies,” Amy Ferketich, a researcher at The Ohio State University, US, told Reuters.
So what can we do to limit children’s exposure to second-hand smoke? Parents should stop smoking for good. But if they can’t, they should never smoke---or let others smoke---around their children.
53. Which of the following is TRUE according to the article?
A. Half of the children ages 9 to 18 in the US have parents who smoked at home.
B. Most smokers in the US don’t care about the effects that smoking can have on those around them.
C. Dame Sally believes many parents who smoke in front of their kids have no idea of the damage that they are doing.
D. Hundreds of chemicals contained in tobacco can cause cancer.
54. Why is second-hand smoke particularly damaging to children?
a. they have smaller lungs
b. they breathe less quickly
c. their immune systems are less developed
d. their brains are still growing
A. ab B. ac C. bd D. bc
55. The drop of second-hand smoke exposure in recent years ______.
A. mostly benefits companies rather than families
