I had never given a thought to working on a newspaper. But when my husband decided to start one in our small rocky mountain town, I went along with the idea. I didn’t know how to interview anyone, take interesting photos, or even put a newspaper article together. So I took my camera and just started carrying it with me everywhere.
One Saturday morning, I went on a children’s hayride to get some shots of the local kids. I arrived early, so I could talk to the adults in charge, I needed to get some information to go with any picture I took.
After the kids were seated on the hay(干草), I had plenty of pictures of their smiling faces. I just stopped to chat with a lady who had her horse with her. She planned to ride alongside the wagon and keep an eye on things.
While I chatted with her, her horse turned to fully face me and gave me a big horse smile. He opened his mouth wide, showing all of his teeth. We all laughed and I asked the lady to make him do it again so I could take a picture. She said she hadn’t made him do it the first time and didn’t know how to get him smile again.
I stepped back, positioned my camera, and said to the horse, “Smile again for the camera,” and he did! He looked right at the camera and gave me a huge horse smile. In fact, I got two shots of him and he was willing to keep smiling at the camera.
Later on, we published the pictures of the kids and their hayride in the paper but the picture of the horse got the most attention. I have kept that picture in my photo album to this day. And proudly show it off every chance I get.
After that, I was always ready to go and get the story. I had learned how exciting and rewarding interviews and news photography could be. You may think you know your community pretty well. But wonderful surprises are waiting around you.

Monday: Here I am, in the middle of nowhere. This camping trip idea is not getting off to a very good start. It’s raining and the tent leaks. The hiking seemed to take forever, and I still can’t understand how it could all have been up hill! How did I ever let my brother persuade me into this? When we get home --- if we ever get home --- he’s going to have to do something great to get back on my good side. Maybe he should sponsor a shopping spree(狂购)at the mall!Tuesday: Things are looking up. The sun came out today, so we were able to leave the tents and dry out. We’re camped at the edge of a small lake that I couldn’t see before because of the rain and fog. The mountains are all around us, and the forest is absolutely beautiful. We spent most of the day dragging out everything out of our backpacks or tents and putting it where the sun could dry it out. Later in the afternoon we tried to catch the fish for dinner, but the fish were smarter than we were. At night we built a fire and sang songs happily.
Wednesday: We hiked to the far side of the lake and climbed to the top of a small peak. From there we could see how high the other mountains were and how far the forest spread around us. On the way up we passed through a snowfield!
Thursday: I caught my first fish! We followed the stream that fed the lake. After about two miles, we came to a section that Carol said looked “fishy”. She had a pack rod(竿), which can be carried in a backpack. I asked to cast it, and I caught a fish on my first try. Carol caught a few more. But they were just too pretty to eat for lunch so we put them back in the stream.
Friday: I can’t believe we are going home already. It will be nice to get a hot shower, sleep in a real bed, and eat junk food, but the trip has been wonderful. We’re already talking about another camping adventure next year where we canoe down a river. It’s hard to believe, but I think this city girl has a little country blood in her veins.

A group of young artists in ancient Chinese costumes turned out to be one of the most eye-catching parts of a grand parade marking the 449th birthday of William Shakespeare in his hometown on Saturday.
"We are more than happy to be part of the celebration of the 449th birthday of Shakespeare, one of the world's greatest men," said Tian Zheng, an actor with the National Theater of China.
The Chinese version of Hamlet, staged three days in a row at the Civic Hall of Stratford-upon-Aven, proved to be a success in that many local Shakespeare fans gave high marks to their performance, said James Mark, the director.
"Though I could not understand Mandarin Chinese, I can see that artists from China are superb in their performance and people find their costumes fantastic," Nigel, a local Shakespeare fan, said.
"Ni Hao! (hello) Chinese King! Ni Hao, Chinese Hamlet!" local spectators find the Mandarin phrases they pick up perhaps from some Chinese restaurants the very words to greet the Chinese artists.
Along with thousands of people, the Chinese artists in their colorful costumes started from the Shakespeare birthplace and ended up in the Holy Trinity Church to pay tribute to the Englishman most of them regard as the king of plays.
The Chinese artists are only part of the guests from over 17 countries around the world to make the pilgrimage from Shakespeare's birthplace to his grave at the Holy Trinity Church. The guest list also includes ambassadors(大使)from China, the United States, Canada, Japan, Croatia and Ireland.
Students from Oxford University, Cambridge University, Birmingham University and local schools like the Shakespeare Institute and Shakespeare Preparatory School were also in the parade.
The 2017 celebrations, which run for an extended four-day period from April 23 to 26, are a taster thing, which marks the start of a three-year journey toward the launch of the World Shakespeare Festival in 2016, said Diana Owen, director of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, an independent charity organization.
62. From the passage, how do you think the audience in Britain responded to a Chinese version of Hamlet?

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job.
65
.
So, you have to give a speech --- and you are terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble(结结巴巴) over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank Goodness, it’s over. I’m just not good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.”
Cheep up!
66
. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of your time doing your research. Then spend plenty of your time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they help you make your points more clearly.
67
. Don’t talk over their heads, and don’t talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Just remember: Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief.
68
. And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience.
If you follow these simple steps, you will see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! Still doubt about it?
69
.
A. It doesn’t have to be that bad.
B. Don’t say what you aren’t familiar with.
C. This article gives some advice on how to give a good speech.
