  50

me long to realize this was not rude in China, but a

  51

  of curiosity.

I visited Datong last week, where the local people are 52 used to Westerners. An elderly woman couldn’t believe her 53

  when she saw me. And

feel offended (使不舒服) by her staring at me, I was

  55

to see her smile back when I said “Nihao.”

When I visited one of Datong’ s middle schools to talk about English Weekly ,the students asked me to

  56

their copies of the newspaper . And one girl at the Yungang Grottoes asked to have her picture taken with me. I

  57

  like a celebrity(名人)!

  I have

  58

over the last month how true it is that the British are very 59

. We can learn a lot about

  60

from China’s culture and habits. And I am learning more every day.

American and British people use different greetings. In the USA the commonest greeting is “Hi”, In Britain it is “Hello!” or “How are you? ”. “Hi!” is creeping(不知不觉地进入) into British , too. When they are introduced to someone ,the Americans say , “Glad to know you .” The British say, “How do you do ?” or “Pleased to meet you .” When Americans say “Goodbye ”, they nearly always add, “Have a good day .” or “Have a good trip.” etc, to friends and strangers alike. Britons are already beginning to use “Have a good day .”

The British usually use “got ” in the sense of “have ”. The Americans hardly ever do.

AmE: Do you have a car ,room, etc.? Yes ,I do.

BrE: Have you got a car ,room, etc? yes ,I have .

There are number of differences between American and British English in the spelling of words ,e.g. check (US)/ cheque (UK). Many American words ending in “or”,e.g. honor , labor are spelt in British English with an “our” ,e.g. honour, labour. Many verbs in American English with “ize ”or “izing” forms , e.g. organize, realizing are spelt in BrE with “ise ”or “ising” ,e.g. organize ,realising. In American English, “practice” is used both for the verb and noun. In BrE, the verb is spelt “practise”, and the noun “practice.” In American English, one writes “traveler ”, while in British English, one writes “traveller”.

It was once predicted that British and American English would become separate languages finally. But the opposite has happened. The links (联系)between the two countries are so strong that linguistically (语言上地),and probably cultural (文化上的)too, they are closer together than ever .

  )61.The Americans hardly say “

  ”

  C. There are few differences in spelling between AmE and BrE.

  D. The different usages of words in AmE and BrE.

  (

) 63.Which of the following is TRUE?

Today we want to tell you something about learning a language, and English in particular(特别的). Students used to learn languages by memorizing grammar rules and words lists. Some unlucky ones still try to learn this way. It is almost impossible to become skillful in speaking a language unless you use it and all modern methods are based on this theory. The course you are going to study is audio visual (视听):this means it attempts to teach you by matching sounds and pictures. The pictures help you to understand, remember and use the language you are learning. These methods can be used in the classroom or in a language laboratory where students practise something that has been recorded on the tape.

English is the official language used in Australia, Canada, the British Isles, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States of America. But it is also becoming international and is the principal(主要的) second language throughout the world . Perhaps through English we will be able to understand each other better. It is the duty of every man to work. The life of a lazy man is of no use to himself and to others. The man who is too lazy to work is the man who is generally most ready to beg or to steal. Every boy, when he is young, should learn how to do some useful work.

But it is not enough that a boy should learn some kind of work. He should put his heart and soul completely into his work ,and not waste his spare time. “work while you work and play while you play” is as good a rule for young people as for the old!

There is no better help to diligence (勤奋) that the habit of early rising ,and this , just like all other good habits, is most easily formed in youth. There is English saying “Lost time never returns”. This means that everybody must be diligent and make good use of his time. One must study hard when one is young so that one may make great progress, succeed in life and become useful to one’s country. Therefore, we can say that diligence is the mother of success.

  D. work all the time without playing

  D

  Hurricanes

In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these ,only about half a dozen becomes the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that are called hurricanes, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people .

The great storms that hit the coast start as soft circling wind hundreds—even thousands of miles out to tea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the southeast winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist (潮湿)air flows in at the bottom of such a wind, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat is changed to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to move in a counterclockwise motion(逆时针运动).

The life of a hurricane is only about nine days , but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released(释放) by a hurricane ’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and distinction (毁灭)in a hurricane . A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12 inch downpours , causing sudden floods .Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea the mountains of water moving toward the hurricane center . The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.

  (

) 73. When is an ordinary tropical storm called a hurricane?

  A. When it begins in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas.

  B. When it hits the coastline.

  C. When it is more than 75 miles wide.

  D. When its winds reach 75 miles per hour.

) 74. What is the worst thing about hurricanes?

  A. The terrible effects of water.

  B. The heat they give off.

  C. That they last about nine days.

  D. Their strong winds.

  (

) 75.The underlined word “downpour ” in the last paragraph means

  .

  A. Heavy rainfall.

  B. dangerous waves.

  Earthquakes

Earthquakes are something that most people fear. There are some places that have few or no earthquakes. Most places in the world, however, have them regularly. Some places often have them.

The most talked about earthquake in the United States was in San Francisco in 1906. Over 500 people died in it.

Strong earthquakes are not always the ones that kill the most people. In 1755, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded was felt in Portugal. Around 20,000 people died.

In 1923, a very powerful earthquake hit the Tokyo --- Yokohama area of Japan. A hundred and forty thousand people died .Most of them died in fires which followed the earthquake.

One of the worst earthquakes ever was in China in 1976. It killed a large number of people .The worst earthquake ever reported was also in China 400.000 people were killed or injured in this quake, which happened in 1566.

Earthquakes are not the only acts of nature which people fear .Floods and tidal (潮汛) waves also cause people to be afraid. So do bad storms like typhoons(台风). Sometimes these things cause lots of deaths. They are also very dangerous. But they probably do not worry people as much as earthquakes, especially in these modern times. The reason is that we often know they are coming, we have some warning. Someday we may be able to know an earthquake is coming. So far, however, no sure way is known to tell an earthquake before it happens. When one comes, it is a surprise. People cannot prepare for it.
