One of the interesting things about Cuba is its educational systems. As in many other countries, schools are free. What is unusual is that schools combine study with manual work(). Each school has a plot of land where the children work for each day. They plant vegetables, which they need weed and water, and later they harvest the crops. In this way, they develop good working habits and learn how important it is to produce. Usually, children do not like vegetables such as spinach(菠菜), green beans, or cabbage. But by growing vegetables themselves, Cuban children soon develop a taste for them. During the summer, older children also go to the country to help the farmers with the crops.
In this system, the children spend part of their school time studying and the rest working in the open air helping increase the nation's production.

Almost everyone knows the meaning of Mr, Mrs. and Miss. Mr. is used before the names of men, Mrs. is for married women and Miss is for single women. But what is Ms?
For some time businessmen in the United States have used Ms before a woman's name when they do not know whether the woman is married or not. Today, however, many women prefer to use Ms rather than Mrs or Miss. The word Mr does not tell us whether or not a man is married. Many women think this is an advantage(优势) for men. They want to be equal(平等) to men in this way. These women feel that it is not important for people to know whether they are married or not.
There are some problems with Ms, however. Not all women like it. Some like the older ways of doing things. Some find it difficult to pronounce. (Ms sounds like “Miz”.) Generally, young women like it better than older women do. It is difficult to know whether or not Ms will be used by more American women in the future.
(D)
Before 1900, many theories existed as to the cause of yellow fever(黄热病). Some doctors were sure the disease was air-borne, others felt that it was spread from person to person.
Dr. Carlos Finlay, a well-known Cuban doctor of that time, had long held the theory that it was caused by the bite of a mosquito (蚊子). But neither the public nor the doctors then accepted his idea.
Despite this, Walter Reed, an American doctor sent to study yellow fever in Cuba, went to talk with Finlay. Reed, after reading a lot on the subject, had begun to think that Dr. Finlay might be right. Then Reed and his comrades set to work at once. Outside Havana, they set up a laboratory and began experiments to test the theory. The experiments were successful. Now we know: A period of about two weeks must pass before a mosquito, after feeding on a sick person, could infect(传染) another person; the sick person who had to have yellow fever a certain number of days before the mosquito biting him was able to carry the disease.
