Dear Liz,
My stay in Thailand has certainly been the experience of my life.
Life is busy and exciting. Bangkok is just like any other big city with a population of 10 million and heavy traffic. I’m very lucky because my host family is in a nice quiet area outside the city. There are Mr. and Mrs. Phairat, their son Sanan, who is 18, the daughter Chinda, who is 16, and Grandpa and Grandma.
I, with Sanan and Chinda, go to an international school that teaches about 70 percent in English and 30 percent in Thai. I’ve learned some spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favourite. I’m learning all about Thai food and culture. People don’t use chopsticks here, but spoons and forks. After coming back, I’ll cook you a real Thai meal.
Last weekend we visited some temples and then drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok. I thought it was great, but Sanan and Chinda say that next month they’re taking me to Phuket Island, where the beaches are even more beautiful. The month after next, we’re going to travel to Mr. Phairat’s hometown in the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there, and they have two elephants. I’m going to ride those elephants – and even wash them. Sanan and Chinda say it’s really fun.
I’m amazed by everything in this country, especially by the elephants. Elephants are an important part of Thai culture and way of life. They have been a traditional symbol (象征) of Thailand for many years in times of war and peace. In the seventh century, a Thai king trained 20,000 elephants for battle.
I’ll tell you all about my Thai boxing (拳击) lessons next time I write.

Cats are the most popular pets among Americans. So it is not surprising that there are many expressions about cats. Some cats like to catch small birds, like canaries (金丝雀). If someone looks very proud or satisfied with himself, we say he looks like the cat that ate the canary.
Sometimes, a cat likes to play with a small animal it catches.
So if you play cat and mouse with someone, you change between different kinds of behavior when dealing with another person. For example, a child might offer something sweet to his little brother and then take it away when he reaches for it.
You may have known that cats spend most of their time sleeping. Sometimes people sleep for a short time during the day. This is called a cat nap.
If you tell about something that was supposed to be a secret, we say you let the cat out of the bag. If you are not able to speak or answer a question, someone might ask if the cat has got your tongue.
Have you ever watched children in the classroom when their teacher leaves for a few minutes? “When the cat’s away, the mice will play.” will best describe that situation.
You may have heard this expression: curiosity (好奇心) killed the cat. This means being too concerned about things that are not your business might cause problems.
If your home is very small, you might say there is not enough room to swing a cat. But you probably should not try this at home!
C
Knowing about yourself not only means finding out what you’re good at and what you like, but also means discovering what you’re not good at and what you don’t like. Both help you to see your aim (目标) in lifeAlthough most students would be unhappy if they failed a very difficult physics exam, they have in fact learned a lot about themselves. They know that they should not become engineers or physical scientists. So failing can help a student to live a happier life if he learns something from it. They may then decide on their aims and choose the work they like and are fit for.
It is impossible to decide whether you like something until you have tried it. If you decide
to play the piano, you need to take more than one lesson before knowing whether you are really interested in it or able to do well. It is not enough if you want to be a great pianist. You also have to like the hard practice and long training. If you enjoy being a great pianist but hate the work, forget it.
It’s a good plan to try as many ideas as possible when you are young. Then you will find out what your true interests are.
59. If you say you really know yourself,
.
A. you know what you don’t like
B. you know what you are good at
C. you have no interest in your work
D. you’ve got the whole picture of yourself
60. Failing can turn out to be something good if
.
A. you have aim in life
B. you learn something from it
C. you lead a happier life
D. your decision is right
61. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Success is more helpful.
B. No one is fit for the job of a physical scientist.
C. Failure is a better mirror.
D. Physics can help students live a better life.
D
About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn't help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked: "So, how have you been?" And the boy, who could not have been more than seven or eight years old, replied, "To tell the truth, I've been feeling a little depressed (压抑) lately."
His words stuck in my mind because it confirmed (证实) my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn't find out we were "depressed" until we were in high school.
Children don't seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to. Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why?
Human development is based not only on natural biological states, but also on ways of getting social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually needs to learn the secrets of the new social role. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, however, television has passed information to all viewers. Unable to resist (抵制) the temptation (诱惑), many children turn their attention from printed texts to more interesting moving pictures.
Communication through print, , allows for a great deal of control over the social information which children can get. Reading and writing need symbols that must be memorized and practiced. Children must read simple books before they can read difficult materials. 62. According to the author, feeling depressed is ______________.
A. a sign of a psychology (心理) problem in a child
B. an important period of children's development
C. something hardly to be expected in a young child
D. a state present in all humans, including children

2017学年第一学期十校联合体高一期中联考答案
作文
One possible version:
How to be popular
Most people would like to be popular with others, but what is the secret to achieving popularity? In fact, it is very simple.
The first step is to improve our appearance. We should always make sure that we dress well and smile warmly. In this way, people will surely be impressed by our confidence. Another step is to build up our character. We should always be honest and willing to help others whenever it is necessary. If we know how to get on well with others, people will be willing to work with us. Besides, to be a good listener is also important. It is a good way to show our respect to others.
So I believe the more sinecerely we treat others, the more popular we will be.

Text 10:
Good morning, everybody. My topic for today is “Early Money”. I’m going to tell something about money used in the early days. To be honest, we know little about how early people came to use money, but we do know some of the things which have been used as money. In early times in some European countries, salt was difficult to get. It was used as money. In some parts of Asia, tea was used for money. The American Indians used nuts and other things. Perhaps the most common money of all was an animal of some kind. In some places today, cows are still used as a kind of money. So you see, things highly valued by everybody may serve as money.
The Chinese were the first people to use coins as money. Oh, sorry, you don’t know the word? Well, it is spelled C-O-I-N. Here are some coins of the past. You can come over and have a look.
