  第三部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分0分)

  第一节 (共1小题;每小题2分,满分0分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!

There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green -a strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.

Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.

  56. The passage is mainly about _____________.

  A. color and its surprising effects.

  B. women being luckier than men

  C. danger caused by color blindness

  D. color blindness

  57. Which of the statements about the color- blind is true?

  A. Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color.

  B. None of them can see deep red.

  C. None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.

  D. All of them see everything in shades of green.

  58. We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a _____________.

  A. red light

  B. yellow light

  C. blue light

  D. green light

  B

When the seventeenth-century settlers brought the English language to America, they immediately and necessarily began to adapt (使适应) it to their new environment. These changes were clear early and criticized by some people on both sides of the Atlantic. However, after the Revolution, Americans began to be proud of their own form of English. Noah Webster was the major early supporter of American meanings and spellings over British ones and published the earliest American dictionary, An American Dictionary of the English Language. During the years since Webster, language differences have continued to develop, proving (证明) the truth of George Bernard Shaw’s often-repeated words that the two nations are “divided by a common language”.

Like the American language, the earliest American literature (文学) copied English models. However, after the Revolution and the War of 1812, writers began to create a clear American literature. However, in 1820, Sydney Smith asked the famous question “Who reads an American book?”

Answering to this and similar taunts (讽刺) with creative anger, American writers soon produced works that plenty of British people read. Works by Washing-ton Irving, Walt Whitman, and Mark Twain had been acclaimed greatly in Britain by the end of the nineteenth century.

Even as American writers got respect in Britain, British writers continued to have great influence in America. Charles Dickens went to America twice, in 1842 and 1867-68. Other major British writers who traveled and lived in the United States include D.H. Lawrence and Aldous Huxley. British best works continue to be widely read. The works of William Shakespeare and Jane Austen became popular films.

At the turn of the twenty-first century, many books and writers continue to cross the Atlantic in both directions — made possible by the proud heritage (继承) of the shared language.

  59. The author of this passage seems to think ______.

  A. British English is better than American English

  B. American English is better than British English

  C. the same language has divided the two nations

  D. the same language has connected the two nations

  60. From the question asked by Sydney Smith, we can infer ______.

  A. the British had to translate American books into English ones

  B. the British found American books difficult to understand

  C. the British thought highly of books written by Americans

  D. the British looked down upon American books at first

  61. The underlined word “acclaimed” in Paragraph 3 probably means “______”.

  A. sold

  B. discussed

  C. welcomed

  D. refused

  62. What made it possible for books and writers to cross the Atlantic in both directions?

  A. The War of 1812.

  B. The American Revolution.

  C. The language differences.

  D. The common language.

Shirley began to make movies at the age of five, and she was only nine years old when she played the role of Heidi(海蒂). (2)In almost every part of the world where movies are seen on television, children and their parents still enjoy Heidi and the other movies of Shirley Temple. Although she has not appeared in a film for over thirty years, her name is still familiar to old and young alike.

When Shirley Temple was twenty-one years old, she already retired from her career(职业生涯) as an actress. (3)Twenty years later many people still thought of her as a little girl that Americans had always loved in the movies; but others knew her as an intelligent(有才智的) woman with knowledge of world problems. In 1969 he appointed(任命) her a representative(代表) to the United Nations, beginning a new career for the former(先前的) child star of the movies.

(4)One of Shirley’s most popular dancing and singing partners was George Murphy(乔治·墨菲), who was twenty-six years older than Shirley. Dear David,

I’ve learned it from the Internet that you want to make a Chinese friend so as to learn the Chinese language and culture. I’m glad that you show such great interest in China and I would like to be your friend.

I will try my best to write to you as often as possible to introduce you the Chinese culture. When you have an opportunity to come to China, I’ll teach you how to speak Chinese and show you around some famous historical places of interest. Anyway, I am going to help you as much as I can. How do you think?

I’m looking forward to your early reply.

  Yours sincerely,

  Li Hua
