Why does most of the world travel on the right side today? Theories differ, but there’s no doubt that Napoleon was a major influence. The French have used the right since at least the late 18th century. Some say that before the French Revolution, noblemen drove their carriages on the left, forcing the peasants to the right.Regardless of the origin,Napoleon brought right-hand traffic to the nations he conquered, including Russia,Switzerland and Germany.Hitler,in turn, ordered right-hand traffic in Czechoslovakia and Austria in the 1930s.Nations that escaped right-hand control, like Great Britain, followed their left-hand tradition.
The US has not always been a nation of right-hand drivers; earlier in its history, carriage and horse traffic travelled on the left,as it did in England. But by the late 1700s,people driving large wagons pulled by several pairs of horses began promoting a shift(改变)to the right.A driver would sit on the rear(后面的)left horse in order to wave his whip(鞭子)with his right hand; to see opposite traffic clearly, they travelled on the right.
One of the final moves to firmly standardize traffic directions in the US occurred in the 20th century, when Henry Ford decided to mass-produce his cars with controls on the left (one reason, stated in 1908: the convenience for passengers exiting directly onto the edge, especially if there is a lady to be considered).Once these rules were set, many countries eventually adjusted to the right-hand standard, including Canada in the 1920s,Sweden in 1967 and Burma in 1970.The UK and former colonies such as Australia and India are among the Western world’s few remaining holdouts(坚持不变者).Several Asian nations, including Japan, use the left as well—though many places use both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive cars.
1.Why did people in Switzerland travel on the right?
A. Because they had used the right-hand traffic since the 18th century.
B.Because rich people enjoyed driving their carriages on the right.

3.Henry Ford produced cars with controls on the left .

We spend two weeks in London last year.We went there in the autumn. We think it is the best season to visit England. The weather is usually good but there aren’t too many tourists in October. We stayed in a small hotel in the West End.It was convenient as we did most of our traveling by foot.We went to look at the places where all tourists see.We saw Buckingham Palace and the National Gallery. We went to shopping in Oxford Street and spent too many money. What we liked most, though, was going to theatre. We don’t have the chance to see so wonderful plays at home.A lot of people say English food is very badly. We didn’t think so.It’s true that most of the restaurants are French or Italian or Chinese, but we had some very good meal.

从第一段的“Napoleon brought right-hand traffic to the nations he conquered,including Russia,Switzerland and Germany.”
从最后一段倒数第二句“The UK and former colonies such as Australia and India are among the Western world’s few remaining holdouts(坚持不变者).”及倒数第一句的“Several Asian nations, including Japan, use the left as well”可知England,Japan及Australia都是车辆右行,只有Austria是车辆左行,故选A项。
从最后一段的“one reason, stated in 1908: the convenience for passengers exiting directly onto the edge, especially if there is a lady to be considered”可知正确答案为B项。
从第一段的“before the French Revolution, noblemen drove their carriages on the left, forcing the peasants to the right”可知A项错误。 从最后一段的“Several Asian nations, including Japan, use the left as well”可知D项错误。从最后一段的“adjusted to the right-hand standard,...Burma in 1970.”
ruin“毁坏”;enrich“丰富”;spare“抽出,腾出”;obtain“获得”。
2.D head for“前往”。
故选择brakes(车刹),A项正确。
5.C knock“敲”;overtake“超过,超越”;miss“错过;思念”;lose“遗失”。
laugh at“嘲笑”;throw sth.at sb.“将某物向某人砸过去”; glance at“看一眼”;yell at sb.“对某人吼叫”。
wonder“想知道,纳闷”;guess“猜测”; ignore“不理,忽略”。
9.C expectation“期望,期待”;passenger“乘客”;garbage“垃圾”;goods“货物”。
10.D turn up“出现”;push“推”;hold up“延误”;pile up“堆积”。
11.C road“道路”;child“儿童”;you“你”;dustbin“垃圾箱”。
12.B upset“难过的”;happy“快乐的、幸福的”;pitiful“可怜的”;frightened“害怕的”。
spread sth.to sb.“将某事传给某人”;share sth.with sb.“与某人分享某物”。
14.D surprise“惊讶”;pleasure“乐趣”;doubt“疑虑”;regret“后悔”。
15.B funny“有趣的”;important“重要的”;strange“奇怪的”;embarrassing“令人尴尬的”。
16.A remember“记得”;forget“忘记”;value“重视”;appreciate“欣赏,感激”。
17.C enjoy“享受,喜爱”;exchange“交换”;recall“记起,回忆起”;imagine“想象”。
18.B inspire“激励”;take“接受,参加”;mend“修补,修正”;notice“注意到,看到”。
19.A let“让;允许”;consist“包括,包含”;make“制造”;dream“梦想,希望”。 let go of sth.“放弃;忘却”。
distinguish“区分,分辨”;deserve“应得,配得”;deliver“投递,分发”。
