A
In 1978,my wife and I attended the Star Trek convention at the Regency Hotel in Denver,Colorado.Among the guests in attendance were R.Bruce Hyde(“Lt.Kevin Riley”from Star Trek),Jonathan Harris(“Dr.Zachary Smith” from Lost in Space)and George Takei(“HiKaru Sulu” from Star Trek).
While in the men’s room at one point during the convention, I was somewhat startled when George Takei entered.I knew he wasn’t coming in to use the lavatory facilities, since he had them in his hotel room.I quickly figured out that he was “passing through”the restroom on his way to the men’s exercise room, located next door.
I casually said,“What’s up,George?”He smiled and replied,“Two hours of exercise, every day!You never know when I’ll be called upon for a part that requires strenuous physical activity.” Those of us in the men’s room asked if we could follow him into the exercise room to watch him work out,and he said,“Sure! Then I’ll have someone to talk to!”
While he was exercising,I pulled out a pack of cigarettes and politely asked,“Do you mind if I smoke?”(In 1978,one could smoke almost anywhere.)Mr Takei stopped his exercise, stared at me for a second and said,“Yes,as a matter of fact,I do.”I put my pack of cigarettes away.
For the next two hours,George Takei appeared to speak only to me,asking me questions about my smoking and saying,“You never saw anyone on board the U.S.S Enterprise smoking.”He explained that it wasn’t because smoking was forbidden. It was due to the fact that by the 23rd century, humans would have learned that smoking accomplished no good and served no needs.
The words from the “lecture”of TV’s “Hikaru Sulu”weighed heavily on my mind.It was not because of what was said, but it was because of who was saying it.For months afterward,I replayed our conversation in my mind and finally came to my senses.Later that year,I began a three-year effort to quit smoking, which was ultimately successful.

For the Capone family, one son is graduating and will go into college soon, while another died this week because of taking too much heroin(海洛因). “Lacey High School’s counseling department has been very brave to believe in my son and me,and so has the police department and the Ocean County prosecutor(检察官),”Candace said.“They did everything they could to save my son’s life.”
With Garrett Capone graduating next Friday night,Candace has some hope. The high school’s guidance department not only tried to help Michael, but helped Garrett greatly and guided him away from his brother’s path.He now has a job working for a Stafford Township police officer who runs a small video game business on the side and considers the officer his hero.Garrett will be attending Ocean County College in the fall and hopes to become a police officer himself.

To extinguish(熄灭) different kinds of fires, several types of fire extinguishers have been invent. 1 Most portable kinds operate for less than a minute, so they are useful only on small fires. The law requires ships, trains, buses and planes to carry extinguishers.
Since fuel, oxygen and heat must be present in order for fire to exist, one or more of these things must be removed or reduced to extinguish a fire. 2 The cooling method is the most common way to put out a fire. Water is the best cooling material because it is low in cost and easy to get.
3 This is usually done by covering the fire with sand, steam or some other things. A blanket may be used to cover a small fire.
A third method is called separation. 4
The method that is used to put out a fire depends upon the type of fire. Fires have been grouped in three classes. 5 These materials usually help keep the fire on. Such fires can be stopped most readily by cooling with water.
A.Fire extinguishers should be available everywhere in our life.
B.They must be ready for immediate use when fire breaks out.
C.Where a fire breaks out, there will surely be unavoidable damage.
D.Fires in wood, paper, cloth and the like are called Class A fires.
E.Another method of extinguishing fire is by cutting off the oxygen.
F.If the heat is reduced by cooling the material below a certain temperature, the fire goes out.
G.It includes removing the fuel, or material easy to burn, from a fire, so that it can find no fuel.
