In my opinion,Halloween is the most misunderstood holiday of the year.I am aware that the word “holiday” implies holy day.Unfortunately, most things that people don’t understand can become fearful.
The biggest misunderstanding about Halloween is that it is a day for devil worship.Halloween is now celebrated on October 31 as a costume and candy holiday, but those traditions have actual meanings in history.
October 31 was celebrated as a holiday with great festivals because it marks the end of the harvest season. It also marks the end of the lighter half of the year and the beginning of the darker half of the year, because the light of the day gets shorter and the dark of the night gets longer. In ancient cultures, this was a really meaningful event.
Also it is believed that on this day,the veil between the worlds(the dead and the living) is at its thinnest point and that the spirits can most easily pass through it.It is a very special day to honor spirits. Many people in ancient times, believing that the dead would walk among us,became fearful and so designed strange costumes to fool the dead, which was where the tradition of Halloween costumes came from.Besides, because Halloween marks the beginning of the darker half of the year, many people saw that as evil and became frightened and therefore had such negative associations with this time of year.
Halloween, for me,is a deeply personal holiday. It is a time to reflect on the spiritual nature of myself. It is a day to reconnect to the magical things in life, such as how the love that I feel for my grandmother, who passed away over ten years ago,is still as strong now when I think of her as it ever was when I could be with her in person. My husband and I exchanged our wedding vows on Halloween because I couldn’t think of a more meaningful or romantic day to pledge our love and life to each other.

B.They think it’ll bring them bad luck.
C.They think the dead will kill them on this day.
D.They regard it as a day to worship the devil.
3.Why did people in ancient times wear strange costumes on Halloween?
A.To attract people’s attention.
B.To threaten the children.
C.To fool the dead.

A.enjoy delicious foods
B.express her love for others

If you are not a big fan of tomatoes,it may be best to keep away from the town of Bunol around this time of the year. That’s because every year on the last Wednesday of August, the normally sleepy Spanish town of just 9,000 residents becomes the center stage for the world’s largest food fight—the La Tomatina.
The roots of the festival could be traced back to the year 1944 when some young people decided to disturb a parade they were not allowed to participate in.They did that by attacking everyone with the first produce they could get from the nearby vegetable vendors(摊贩).Luckily for all,it happened to be tomatoes. The kids had so much fun that they kept returning every year and soon other bystanders joined in and a fun festival was born!
Over the years, the town has turned the food fight into a week-long festival that includes colorful parades, dancing and even fireworks. On the night before it ends, the streets of Bunol,Spain are lined up with vendors cooking up giant pans of delicious tomato Paella(肉菜饭) on wood-burning fires.Tourists and locals gather to enjoy the good food and drinks until the early next morning.
As the time for the fight draws near, thousands of people flock to the Plaza Mayor. This year so many people wanted to take part in it that town officials decided to limit the number of people and charge a fee of about $13 USD.
After the tomato fight started, within a few minutes the entire town square and the people in it were covered with tomato mush. The festival did not come to an end until every red tomato had been used.
5.According to the passage,the La Tomatina .
A.involves different kinds of fruits
B.is a popular festival all over Spain
C.occurs yearly on the last Wednesday of August
D.attracts 9,000 people to participate in it each year
6.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The meaning of the La Tomatina.
B.The beginning of the La Tomatina.
C.The purpose of the La Tomatina.
D.The development of the La Tomatina.
7.The week-long La Tomatina ends with .
A.a parade
B.a fighting
C.having delicious food and drink
D.dancing around wood-burning fires
8.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To encourage us to travel to Spain.
B.To introduce a crazy but fun festival.
C.To tell us how to have fun with tomatoes.
D.To show how people use tomatoes in the world.
Ⅱ.七选五
Sure,we’ve all heard that we should get more sleep. The realities of life often make it become “we should get more sleep later”. 1 The result is that you wake up the next day feeling like a role of The Walking Dead. Here are four ways you can adjust your biology in order to pay less for staying up.
●Move around.
Exercising before bed is a sure way to keep awake. That’s why you shouldn’t do it when you want to go to sleep, and it is also why hitting the gym,or even some fast push-ups can tell your body that it’s not time for bed.Being physically exhausted isn’t fun when you are trying to stay up late. 2
●Eat more protein.
Few people think about the fact that the brain and body use a lot more energy when we’re awake. If you are pulling an all-nighter,you’re going to need a lot more food than you are used to eating. 3 To stay awake, plan to eat larger meals than normal and to eat them more frequently.
●Drink the right stuff.
It’s tempting (诱人的) to switch to sugary caffeine drinks like Red Bull, but the sugar will lead to a crash.Instead,if you want to use caffeine, drink early in the evening so it’ll wear off by the time you want to sleep. 4 Don’t make it worse by drinking sugar.
● 5
Turn the lights down at night because bright lights keep you awake. For three or four hours after you’re exposed to bright white light, your body won’t make melatonin,a must for deep sleep. You will sleep better if you turn the lights a little bit down.
A.Turn the lights off.
B.Just do enough to get energetic.
C.And your body can never bear something like that.
D.Your brain can use up to 25 percent of your total calories.
E.When you stay up late, your blood sugar becomes abnormal.
F.There is either more work to be done,or more fun to be had,or both.
G.Avoid bright lights.

.Dear Editor,
Recently there has been a series of wide-ranging discussions about whether it is necessary for primary school students to learn English.
As a senior high school student who has gone through all the pains and efforts to learn this language,I firmly believe it’s time that we took immediate action to free primary school students from the sufferings.
While English is a must in international trade, for most of its child learners across the country, whose number is counted in millions,English is not necessary in their future life.Nor is it an essential part in their future jobs. Most students learn English only to pass exams and that’s why they will soon forget every word after graduation. Why must we trap young kids into an odyssey of learning something unimportant or unnecessary?
A curriculum without English will certainly benefit parents financially, and of course, will be a blessing for young kids who desire less academic pressure and more time to play.
