  阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

  A

The engineer Camillo Olivetti was 40 years old when he started the company in 1908. At his factory in lvrea, he designed and produced the first Italian typewriter. Today the company’s head office is still in Ivrea, near Turin, but the company is much larger than it was in those days and there are offices all around the world.

By 1930 there was a staff of 700 and the company turned out 13,000 machines a year. Some went to customers in Italy, but Olivetti exported more typewriters to other countries.

Camilllo’s son, Adriano, started working for the company in 1924 and later he became the boss. He introduced a standard speed for the production line and he employed technology and design specialists. The company developed new and better typewriters and the calculators(计算器). In 1959 it produced the ELLA computer system. This was the first mainframe(主机)computer designed and made in Italy.

After Adriano died in 1960, the company had a period of financial problems. Other companies, especially the Japanese, made faster progress in electronic technology than the Italian company.

In 1978, Carlo de Benedetti became the new boss. Olivetti increased its marking and service networks and made agreements with other companies to design and produce more advanced office equipment. Soon it became one of the world’s leading companies in information technology and communications. There are now five independent companies in the Olivetti group --- one for personal computers, one for other office equipment, one for systems and service, and two for telecommunications.

Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter (住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.

Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.

If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet’s water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.

  5. What do we learn about pets from Paragraph 1?

  A. They are often forgotten by their owners.

  B. They are used to living outdoors.

  C. They build their own shelter.

  D. They like to stay in warm places.

  6. Why are pet owners asked to stay with their pets when they are out in cold weather?

  A. To know when to bring them inside.

  B. To keep them from eating bad food.

  C. To help them find shelters.

  D. To keep them company.

  7. If pets are left on their own outdoors in cold weather, they may ___.

  A. run short of clean water

  B. dig deep holes for fun

  C. dirty the snow nearby

  D. get lost in the wild

  8. What is the purpose of this text?

  B. To give practical advice.

  C. To tell an interesting story.

  D. To present a research result.

You may think that sailing is a difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn it. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind.

First, you must ask yourself, “Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?” You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.

Let’s start with the wind blowing from the behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. It should be at a 90° angle (角度) to the boat. Then it will catch the wind best.

If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boat. In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be at a 45° angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn’t flap (摆动). It shouldn’t look like on a flagpole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.

Sailing into the wind is not possible. If you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can’t go in a straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tacking. When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.

  9. What should you consider first while sailing?

  A. Sailors’ strength

  B. Wave levels.

  C. Wind directions.

  D. Size of sails.

  10. What does the word “It” underlined in Paragraph 4 refer to?

  A. The boat.

  B. The wind.

  C. The sail.

  D. The angle.

  11. What do you have to do when sailing against the wind?

  A. Move in a straight line.

  B. Allow the sail to flap.

  C. Lower the sail.

  D. Tack the boat.

  12. Where can you probably find the text?

  A. In a popular magazine.

  B. In a tourist guidebook.

  C. In a physics textbook.

  D. In an official report.

  D

Sports account for a growing amount of income made on the sales of commercial time by television companies. Many television companies have used sports to attract viewers from particular sections of the general public, and then they have sold audiences to advertisers.

An attraction of sport programs for the major U.S. media companies is that events are often held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons—the slowest time periods of the week for general television viewing. Sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other times during the week. This means the television networks are able to sell advertising time at relatively high prices during what normally would be dead time for programming.

Media corporations also use sports to attract commercial sponsors that might take their advertising dollars elsewhere if television stations did not report certain sports. The people in the advertising departments of major corporations realize that sports attract male viewers. They also realize that most business travelers are men and that many men make family decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance.

Golf and tennis are special cases for television programming. These sports attract few viewers, and the ratings(收视率)are unusually low. However, the audience for these sports is attractive to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, including many lawyers and business managers. This is why television reporting of golf and tennis is sponsored by companies selling high-priced cars, business and personal computer, and holiday trips .This is also why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of low ratings.

Advertisers are willing to pay high fees to reach high-income consumers and those managers who make decisions to buy thousands of “company cars” and computer, with such viewers, these programs don’t need high ratings to stay on the air. 13.Television sport programs on weekend afternoons

. A. result in more sport event

  B. get more viewers to play sports C. make more people interested in television

  D. bring more money to the television networks 14.Why would weekend afternoons become dead time without sport programs? A. Because there would be few viewers

  B. Because the advertisers would be off work C. Because television programs would go slowly

  D. Because viewers would pay less for watching television 15.In many families, men make decision on

  . A. holiday

  B. sports viewing

  C. television shopping

  D. expensive purchases 16.The ratings are not important for golf and tennis programs because

. A. their advertisers are carmakers

  B. their viewers are attracted by sports C. their advertisers target at rich people

  D. their viewers can afford expensive cars 17.What is the passage mainly about? A. Television viewers are determined by male viewers B. Rich viewers contribute most to television companies C. Sports are gaining importance in advertising on television D. Commercial advertisers are the major sponsors of sport event

Hollywood movies are regularly filled with sex and violence. They can be exciting films but sometimes all you want is a little light-hearted entertainment.

Have you heard of Bollywood? All singing, all dancing and unrealistic, it is the perfect alternative to normal Hollywood movies. Bollywood is the Indian film industry, based in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay.   18   Yet Bollywood is the largest producer of films in the world. This year the Indian Filmgare Awards, Bollywood's Oscars, turn 50 years old.

The typical Bollywood movie usually has the following ingredients: a cup of romance, a tea-spoon of comedy, a dash of international sight-seeing, served with a huge slice of singing and dancing. There will also be one brave hero, one beautiful heroine and one baddie.   19

Bollywood films are full of ideal things and free of daily worries.   20   The actors change clothes and locations within a single song. But the audience don't mind. To Indian movie lovers, especially the poor, such films are a gateway to heaven and the stars are their gods. The films take them to a magical world away from their everyday troubles. The films tell them the impossible is possible and that true love conquers all.

21   Behind the beautiful scenes, Bollywood still emphasizes traditional family values. In most films, if two lovers want to break an arranged marriage, they can't just run away. They must win over their parents.

Bollywood is a decent refreshing replacement for those over-stimulating Hollywood films.   22   They will take you to a brighter, cheerier and more colorful world, where it's still cool to dance around a tree and sing a love song.

A.Bollywood has gradually won its reputation on the world stage.

B.There is never any mention of politics, poverty or war.

C.Most Chinese school kids have probably never seen an Indian film.

D.Bollywood films are mostly comic romances with light-hearted incidental music.

  E.  Bollywood pays great attention to traditional values.

  F.The result is a fun-filled musical.

G.So if you're tired of all that Hollywood actions, check out the following Bollywood films.

  第四部分 短文改错Dear Editor,

I’m writing to tell you opinion about water saving. Water is importance. We, as well as animal, cannot live without water and neither agriculture or industry can go without it. Yet it seemed water is becoming less and less. Many countries in the world find we don’t have enough water. To deal with a problem, I think, we should first go all out to plant trees though trees will help save water. Next, no drinking water should be left running. Third, we should find ways to reuse the water using in washing, especially bath

water for which is quite a lot, and that will save much water.

  Sincerely, Li Hua
