(2017·郴州高三模拟)Homework will not be a concern for pupils attending a pioneering new secondary school in Norfolk.Instead, the 1,100 children will stay longer at school, doing extra study at school as part of the extended(延长的)school day, which could last until about 5 pm.
Rather than setting homework that pupils could struggle with at home, where there may be limited access to computers, they will do that as independent study in the day. When they go home they should enjoy quality family time. That has been really well received by parents who respect the fact that family time will be family time. But the school would still expect youngsters to study at home ahead of important exams.
Independent learning at school would ensure equality because kids who get help with homework from parents might rely on others too much.
Peter Devonish,a teacher at the school, said,“Having the children at school a bit longer to strengthen their learning is a really good idea, because they can have their time with the family.”But he warned,“A disadvantage is that our school is in the countryside, which means it’s not so perfect to get children home at that time.”
Mr.Devonish said they also set pupils project-based homework, such as looking at an energy-efficient house, which allowed them to combine independent study with working with their parents.
Craig Morrison, another teacher, said,“A large problem with homework has been that not enough is done with it.With homework,a lot of effort can go into it,so it’s about celebrating what children do rather than processing it in terms of marking it and handing it back.”

A.The students may dislike the idea.
B.No staff will agree to stay until 5:30 p.m..

When you are ready for studying, then arrange the reading material and decide what things you need to study first.Put_maximum_time_on_your_weak_and_major_subjects.Set aside your minor ones for few hours as you know that these are comparatively less important than the majors.
Make a realistic study plan which you can follow and stick to it.There is no point of making an 8-hour study schedule daily as you know that it’s not possible for you.Start the preparation at least 4 weeks before the exams.
While making a study plan, don’t forget the breaks after every 90 minutes of study. It will help your eyes to relax and focus in an effective manner.Make a checklist of small milestones and put this on your table so you can see them frequently. When you are done with one or more cross them from the list and focus on the new ones.

(2017·汝城一中、长沙实验中学高三联考)Today,February twenty-ninth,is leap day(闰日).This date only appears on the calendar once every four years. But why?
Everyone knows the Earth takes three hundred sixty-five days to travel around the sun.Well, that is not exactly correct. The Earth really takes three hundred sixty-five days, five hours,forty-eight minutes and forty-six seconds to complete its orbit around the sun.
The problem for people developing calendars was what to do with the extra five hours,forty-eight minutes and forty-six seconds.
People needed calendars to help them know when to plant crops and when to celebrate religious holidays. The ancient Greeks and Chinese had a solution. They produced calendars that included extra months every nineteen years.
The ancient Romans had a different solution. In the year forty-six,the Roman ruler Julius Caesar made a new calendar. The Julian calendar included an extra day every four years. But there was a problem. The Julian year was just over eleven minutes longer than the cycle of the seasons. In 1582,Pope Gregory the Thirteenth established a new calendar to keep a better recorder of the days.Pole Gregory was the religious leader of most of Europe. He decided that years that could be divided by four would add a day. However, years that ended in two zeros and that could not be evenly divided by four hundred would not be leap years. For example, the years 1700,1800 and 1900 were not leap years. But the years 1600 and 2000 were leap years.
So leap years are years with three hundred sixty-six days, instead of the usual three hundred sixty-five.This extra day is added to the calendar on February twenty-ninth,sometimes known as leap day.People born on leap day may be called “leapings”.They usually celebrate their birthday on February twenty-eight or March first.

Ⅵ.阅读简答
(2017·岳阳一中高三月考)Elephants and people are in competition for space. In much of Africa, elephants are now put in national parks. Elephants suffered a serious and steady decrease in number in the 1970s.This was the same time when scientists were beginning to learn a great deal about elephants and their behavior. Studies through the 1980s and into the 1990s showed a lot about their sounds and methods of communication.
In Kenya alone, in the 1970s and 1980s, the elephant population decreased from 170,000 to 25,000. The sharp drop in number was the result of poachers (偷猎者) illegally killing elephants for their ivory. The price of ivory went up from $3 a pound to $50 to $100 a pound. Africa became very attractive to poachers. Bull elephants carried larger tusks (象牙), so they were more often killed. With males gone and older females killed by poachers as well, there were many young elephants unable to benefit from the wisdom of the older females and matriarches, who lead the herds.
Kenya took a stand that international trade in ivory was officially forbidden, and $3,000,000 worth of confiscated(没收的)ivory was burned in Kenya. The following year, only 50 elephants were lost to poachers in Kenya instead of 3,000. But Kenya has the fastest growing human population in the world. People throughout Africa won’t tolerate elephants eating their crops and destroying their livelihoods. In South Africa, elephants live behind the fences of national parks. In some parts of Africa, big-game hunters pay a lot of money to hunt elephants. This keeps their numbers down, and the money goes toward conservation. In Kenya, there are some attempts at birth control to keep the elephant population in manageable numbers to reduce conflicts with people.
Faced with a growing human population, elephants are losing the battle for space. It’s unlikely, though, that they will become extinct(绝种的). They will live in natural parks that bring tourists to Africa as well as India and other parts of Asia. The money from tourism will help elephants to survive.

4.解析:选C。aware of“意识到……的”。句意:他们的突然进攻使我们更加意识到我们周围的危险。
5.解析:选B。考查动词用法和词义辨析。judging from...
on the ground of“因为,由于”;on behalf of“代表”;on average“平均”;on the basis of“在……基础上”。
