Several overseas trips with the family have taught us that they can be rewarding, but you always have to be careful of pickpockets.

On a lovely visit to Paris an encounter with a pickpocket gave the wouldbe thief a little more than he bargained_for!

While walking down the famous Champs Elysee, I was astonished to feel someone unzip my handbag and remove my purse. I turned to glimpse a young man turning away and pretending to be absorbed in the mouthwatering contents on display in a bakery window.

Being only a teenager at the time, I had no idea what to do. So I tapped the young man in question on the shoulder and said.

“Excuse me, can you please give me back my purse?”

Of course the pickpocket had no idea what I was saying(and didn't want to know) and proceeded to shrug his shoulders and basically say(in French) “I don't speak English”?

Meanwhile, my Mother(a Scots woman with a bad temper), came to see why I had stopped walking and what was going on. When I informed her of the situation, she lost control and started yelling at the thief who still stood there making gestures in French while a crazy Scots woman harangued(指责)him. At this stage we were starting to attract onlookers, and when my mother started hitting the young man with her handbag the wouldbe thief decided it was time to get away.

Luckily, amid all the disorder the thief lost his control of my purse, and as he made a breakforit, my purse dropped to the ground! I quickly snatched it up and for the rest of vacation we walked around with our handbags clutched against our chests!

  D.answered for

23.The author discovered the pickpocket because ________.

A.his handbag was specially made to stop pickpocketing

B.the author was old enough and experienced there

24.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A.The pickpocket didn't know English and had no idea what I was saying.

B.His Mother tried to beat the thief so that he ran away immediately.

C.It was the bad tempered mother that caused the thief to lose control of the purse.

D.The author was old enough to deal with the case independently at the time.

根据文章第一段中“but you always have to be careful of pickpockets”可知文章主要讲的是关于扒手的事情。

根据文章第二段中“On a lovely visit to Paris an encounter with a pickpocket gave the wouldbe thief a little more than he...”

根据文章第三段中的“I was astonished to feel someone unzip my handbag and remove my purse.”

根据文章第七段中的“Meanwhile, my Mother(a Scots woman with a bad temper)”以及“when my Mother started hitting the young man with her handbag the wouldbe thief decided it was time to get away.”

A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of some fouryearolds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some children reach eagerly for the treat they see. Some last a few minutes before they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment.

By the time the children reach high school, something remarkable has happened. A survey found that those who as fouryearolds had enough selfcontrol to hold out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation(诱惑) early were more likely to be lonely, easily frustrated and inflexible(固守己见的).

Actually, the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn't show up on an IQ test.

The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists' concerns. But brain theory can't explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would sink a less resistant soul.

Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence when it comes to predicting people's success, brain ability as measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as “character”.

EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together; how one's ability to handle stress, for instance, affects the ability to concentrate and put intelligence to use. Among the elements for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ counts for about 20%; the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.

While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.

25.The experiment with the fouryearolds makes it clear that ________.

A.the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment

B.emotional intelligence won't show up until adolescence

C.the ability of selfcontrol plays a role in personal success

D.candy can be used to measure a person's emotional intelligence

26.Which of the following is true of EQ and IQ according to the text?

A.There is no link between EQ and IQ.

B.The higher a person's IQ is, the higher his or her EQ is.

C.Some people can be blessed with lots of both, but some with little of either.

D.Scientists are trying to discover the way in which EQ and IQ work together.

27.The underlined word “upbeat” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.

  A.kind

  B.floating

  C.excited

  D.optimistic

28.What is most likely to be written in the paragraph that follows?

A.Information about famous people with high EQ.

B.Examples showing the opposite voice about EQ.

C.Some reasons why EQ is a relatively new field.

D.Strong demand for basic emotional education.

根据“...those who as fouryearolds had enough selfcontrol to hold out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation(诱惑) early were more likely to be lonely, easily frustrated and inflexible(固守己见的).”

根据倒数第二段“What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together...”

根据“While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.”

  C

Passenger pigeons (旅鸽)once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers. Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks (群)so large that they darkened the sky for hours.

It was calculated that when its population reached its highest point, there were more than 3 billlion passenger pigeons—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.

Sadly the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were most abundant, people believed there was an everlasting supply and killed them by the thousands. Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.

By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by Americans' need for wood, which scattered (驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again.

In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons, but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden on September 1, 1914.

  29. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons________.

  A. were the biggest bird in the world

  B. lived mainly in the south of America

  C. did great harm to the natural environment

  D. were the largest bird population in the US

  30. The underlined word “undoing” probably refers to the pigeons'________.

  A. escape B. ruin

  C. liberation D. evolution

  31. What was the main reason for people to kill passenger pigeons?

  A. To seek pleasure. B. To save other birds.

  C. To make money. D. To protect crops.

  32. What can we infer about the law passed in Michigan?

  A. It was ignored by the public.

  B.

  It was declared too late.

  C. It was unfair.

  D. It was strict.

You've probably heard about sports coaches, fitness coaches, voice and music teachers, career counselors, psychiatrists(精神病医师) and other specialists who teach skills and help us cope with daily life.

But there's a rapidly growing kind of professional who does a little bit of everything. She or he is called a “life_coach”. People who are at crossroads in their lives, and corporations that want to give certain employees a career boost, are turning to them for help.

The idea that one person's success story can change other people's lives for the better goes back at least to the 1930s. Dale Carnegie's famous selfimprovement program “How to Win Friends and Influence People” came along soon thereafter.

But this new style of life coaches includes more than enthusiastic speakers or writers. They use their own experiences in business, sports, military service, or psychotherapy (心理疗法)to help others make critical life decisions.

They often give their approach a slogan, such as “energy coaching” or “fearless living” or “working yourself happy”.

Dave Lakhani in Boise, Idaho, for instance, works with salespeople to develop what he calls a “road map”. He says an ongoing relationship with a coach is like having a personal fitness trainer for one's career and life outside work.

Lakhani's Bold Approach coaching firm also donates some of its time to help people who are anything but

successful—including battered women and struggling single mothers.

But others in the socalled “helping professions” are not thrilled about the lifecoaching movement. They say that anyone, trained or untrained, can call himself or herself a life coach, and that slick(华而不实的) promoters who mess with people's lives can do more harm than good.

33.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

  A.Working Yourself Happy

B.Life Coaches Help with Tough Decisions

C.How to Cope with Daily Life with Life Coaches

  D.The LifeCoaching Movement

34.The underlined phrase “life coach” in Paragraph 2 means “________”.

A.The career counselor who teaches skills

B.The psychiatrist who helps us cope with daily life

C.The fitness coach who teaches us lessons

D.The specialist who helps us make important life decisions

35.What is the author's attitude towards life coaches?

  A.Cautious.

  B.Approving.

  C.Neutral(中立的).

  D.Disapproving.

How to Avoid Weight Gain Over Holidays

Do you love the holidays, but hate the pounds that follow? You are not alone. Holidays are times for feasting and celebrating. Many people are worried about their weight. __36__ Whether you are celebrating at the office party or sitting down for the traditional family dinner, regard eating as time for tasting a variety of foods. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don't have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy.

Here are some tips for preventing weight gain and maintaining physical fitness.

  Don't skip meals.

Before you leave home, have a small, lowfat meal or snack. __37__

  Control portions.

Use a small plate (about 10 inches) and put aside the large ones that may encourage you to “load up”. __38__ Once you have your “tasting” serving, move away from the dining table. Doing so will make it less tempting (吸引人的) to be eating constantly as your appetite is inspired by the sight of food.

Begin with soup and fruit or vegetables.

Fill up beforehand with waterbased soup and raw fruit or vegetables. Or drink a large glass of water before you eat to help you feel full.

  Stick to physical activity.

__39__ A 20minute walk after a meal can help burn off additional calories.

__40__ Dishes that look oily or creamy may have a large amount of fat. Choose lean meats. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables. Use lemon juice instead of dressing or butter.

  A. This may help to avoid getting too excited before delicious food.

  B. You had better turn your attention away from delicious foods.

  C. With proper planning, though, it is possible to keep normal weight during the holidays.

  D. You should be most comfortable eating an amount of food about the size of your fist.

  E. Avoid highfat foods.

  F. Don't let exercise take a break during the holidays.

  G. You'd better remember the Dos and Don'ts for keeping fit and slim.

Many people are worried about their weight. You don't have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy.

41.C A.机会;B. My husband Jeff and I moved into our new home in Scottsbluff last year just before Christmas.

42.A A.孤独的;B. This year, we were again unable to be with our families for Christmas...that sense of Christmas isolation (孤立) all too well, 可以判断作者刚搬到新地方的时候是打算孤独地去过圣诞节的,故选A。

43.B A.因此;B.然而;C.反正;D.同时。根据上下文 the neighborly nature of west Nebraska residents started to trickle (陆续临) in.

44.B A.标志;B. Apparently the doorbell wasn't working in the cold snowy weather...

  45.B A.邀请;B.

46.D A.树;B.花;C.邮件;D. 从下文 who brought us a Christmas card and more Christmas cookies.

  47.B A.忘记;B.

  48.A A.温暖的;B.

49.B A.垃圾;B.雪;C.灰尘;D. Apparently the doorbell wasn't working in the cold snowy weather...

  51.B A.准备;B.

52.A A.客人;B.阿姨;C.少女;D. 根据下文 who also had no family in the immediate area with whom to spend the holiday.

53.C A.人民;B.亲戚;C.邻居;D.同事。从上文 a Christmas Eve meal with our neighbors 可知他们是和邻居一起共进晚餐,所以他们对邻居心怀感激,故选C。

54.D A.电话;B.

  55.C A.遗憾的;B.

  56.C A.季节;B.

  57.A A.知道;B.

58.C A.快乐;B.繁忙;C.单独;D. 根据上文...that sense of Christmas isolation (孤立) all too well 和下文 Lonely people are all around us,

  59.D A.总是;B. Just take a look around you.

  60.B A.仔细的;B.
