Washington(Reuters)-People who drink two or more sweetened soft drinks a week have a much higher risk of pancreatic cancer(胰腺癌),an unusual but deadly cancer, researchers reported on Monday.

People who drank mostly fruit juice instead of sodas did not have the same risk, the study of 60,000 people in Singapore found.

Sugar may be to blame but people who drink sweetened sodas regularly often have other poor health habits, said Mark Pereira of the University of Minnesota, who led the study.

“The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing the level of insulin(胰岛素)in the body, which we think contributes to pancreatic cancer cell's growth,”Pereira said in a statement.

Writing in the journal Cancer Epidemiology,Biomarkers & Prevention,Pereira and his colleagues said they followed 60,524 men and women in the Singapore Chinese Health Study for 14 years.

Over that time,140 of the volunteers developed pancreatic cancer. Those who drank two or more sweetened soft drinks a week had an 87 percent higher risk of being among those who got pancreatic cancer.

Pereira said he believed the findings would apply elsewhere.

“Singapore is a wealthy country with excellent health care. Favorite pastimes(消遣)are eating and shopping,so the findings should apply to other Western countries,”he said.

But Susan Mayne of the Yale Cancer Center at Yale University in Connecticut was cautious.

“Although this study found a risk, the finding was based on a relatively small number of cases and it remains unclear whether it is a causal(因果的)connection or not,”said Mayne, who serves on the board of the journal, which is published by the American Association for Cancer Research.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, with 230,000 cases globally. In the United States,37,680 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in a year and 34,290 die of it.

ANGER is good for you, as long as you control it properly, according to new psychology research. A new study from Carnegie Mellon University shows anger may help people reduce the negative effects of stress and help you become healthier.

“Here getting emotional is not bad for you if you look at the case of anger,” said Jennifer Lerner of Carnegie Mellon.“The more people display anger, the lower their stress responses.”

Lerner studied 92 UCLA (加利福尼亚大学洛杉矶分校) students by asking them to count back (倒数) from 6,200. They must say out loud every 13th number. Researchers interfered (干扰) with them by asking them to count faster or ask them other questions. If they made any mistakes, they had to restart from the very beginning. Many students felt depressed about making so many mistakes or got angry because the researchers were interrupting them.

Lerner used a hidden video camera and recorded all their facial expressions (面部表情) during the test. The researchers described their reactions as fear, anger and disgust (厌恶).

Other researchers recorded the students' blood pressure, pulse (脉搏) and production of a highstress hormone (荷尔蒙) called cortisol. People whose faces showed more fear during the experiment had higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone. Both can have lasting effects such as diabetes (糖尿病), heart disease, depression and weight gain.

When people feel fear, negative impacts increase, but when they get angry, those negatives go down, according to the study.

“Having that sense of anger leads people to actually feel some power in what otherwise is a maddening (令人发狂的) situation,” Lerner said.

Lerner previously studied Americans' emotional response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks (恐怖袭击) two months after the incident. He found people who reacted with anger were more optimistic. These people are healthier compared with those who were frightened during the event. So in maddening situations, anger is not a bad thing to have. It's a healthier response than fear.
