　　Many parents want to find the most common names, so they seek to lists like the one being released today by the website BabyCenter.com, where more than 300,000 new parents registered the names they gave new babies in 2011. The site's 12th annual top-100 survey finds Sophia and Aiden (with various spellings) most popular again in 2011. New in the top 10 are Mason and Liam for boys and Emily for girls. The Social Security Administration releases its list every May, based on applications for Social Security cards for births in a particular year. Other parenting sites develop similar lists; Parenting.com just released its "top-searched" list, led by Jacob and Isabella, the site says.

　　New trends this year include naming kids after children of celebrities; names from nature (Summer or Clover for girls, Rain or River for boys); and names with a Spanish influence, such as Xavier or Valentina, says BabyCenter editor in chief Linda Murray.

　　Though not in the top 10, other popular names include Harper (daughter of soccer star David Beckham and singer wife Victoria) and both Anderson and Cooper (CNN's Anderson Cooper). 　　It is a plain fact that we are in a world where competition is going on in all areas and at all levels. This is exciting. Yet, on the other hand, competition breeze a pragmatic（实用主义） attitude. People choose to learn things that are useful, and do things that are profitable. Todays' college education is also affected by this general sense of utilitarianism.（功利主义）

　　Many college students choose business nor computing programming as their majors convinced that this professions are where the big money is. It is not unusual to see the college students taking a part time jobs as a warming up for the real battle. I often see my friends taking GRE tests, working on English or computer certificates and taking the driving licence to get a licence. Well, I have nothing against being practical. As the competition in the job market gets more and more intense, students do have reasons to be practical.

　　However, we should never forget that college education is much more than skill training. Just imagine, if your utilitarianism is prevails on campus, living no space for the cultivation（培养） of students' minds, or nurturing of their soul. We will see university is training out well trained spiritless working machines. If utilitarianism prevails society, we will see people bond by mind-forged medicals lost in the money-making ventures; we will see humality lossing their grace and dignity, and that would be disastrous. I'd like to think society as a courage and people persumed for profit or fame as a horese that pulls the courage. Yet without the driver picking direction the courage would go straight and may even end out in a precarious situation.

　　Once when I was six years old I saw an amazing picture in a book called True Stories from Naturc about the primeval forest. It was a picture of a boa constriotor（大蟒蛇）in the act of swallowing an arimal. In the book it said: "Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion."

　　I thought deeply then over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them. But they answered: "Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?"

　　My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of a boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. 　　The grown-ups' response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a great painter. I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. 　　A judge in Los Angeles has sentenced Michael Jackson's personal physician to four years in prison for the 2009 death of the pop superstar.

　　Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor Tuesday handed the sentence to Dr. Conrad Murray, who was convicted earlier this month of involuntary manslaughter(过失杀人) in Jackson's death. Murray, however, could serve only half his sentence due to overcrowding in California's prison system.

　　In issuing the sentence, the judge described Murray as a reckless physician whose actions were "a disgrace to the medical profession." Pastor said Murray lied repeatedly and had not shown remorse for his actions in the treatment of Jackson, who battled insomnia（失眠证）.

　　Prosecutors(原告) said Murray gave Jackson propofol, which is not approved for use as a sleep aid, and then abandoned the entertainer while he, Murray, attended to personal matters. They said the doctor put off calling for emergency help after finding Jackson unresponsive. They also said Jackson put his trust in Murray and paid for it with his life.

　　Murray's lawyers argued Jackson gave himself the fatal dosage without the doctor's knowledge. They said there is no proof the doctor did anything wrong. Murray did not take the stand in his defense.
