After receiving an email that invited me to my school reunion(聚会)not long ago,I had a reality check.10 years had passed since I last laid eyes on any of those former friends.I wondered if we would have a lot to share. Then I started wondering about silly things, like what I would look like, and if I would be a disappointment.I had almost convinced myself I’d better forget thinking about it,but then started to think if I didn’t go,I may wish I had.

I hoped to be successful in society, and so did the other kids in my class.I did wonder how their lives were.Did they realize their dreams?Or did they remember their dreams?I

was filled with lots of questions.Would I see my old friends?Could they recognize me?Was the cheerleader,or the nerdy guy(书呆子)a billionaire(亿万富翁)?Uncertainty and nostalgia(怀旧)continued to appear in my mind as weeks passed.I never really liked my high school all that much when I was there. What made me think I should now?

I asked my husband for his opinion. He is a little older than me and had already been through this decision. He told me not to go.He advised much as I expected and it was nice to hear his opinion. After he had gone on and on about what a terrible idea it was,he’d almost had me convinced.A few days later it was out of my mind. Before long,I got a message from an old friend, with pictures of our graduation. Most classmates, two girls among whom took many pictures, were present that day.My young face was among my friends, with smile and hope.

I made up my mind that I would attend it later. After all,a school reunion is more than just who you are now,it’s who you were.It is a chance through which we can review our past when we were together, and may recall what we said, what we did, even the person we loved. And remember, you will not regret if you attend this kind of activities.

  答案:C

  B

Believe it or not, worry may evolve along with intelligence as a beneficial characteristic, according to a recent study by scientists at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.Professor Jeremy Coplan at the center found that high intelligence and worry are both connected with brain activity, which is measured by the reduction of choline(胆碱)in the subcortical white matter(皮层下白色物质)of the brain.According to the researchers, humans’intelligence may have evolved with worry together.

“Too much worry is generally seen as a negative characteristic and high intelligence as a positive one.But worry may cause humans to avoid dangerous situations, regardless of how remote a possibility they may be,”said Dr.Coplan.“In fact, worry may make people‘take_no_chances,’and such people may have higher survival rates. Thus, like intelligence, worry may give a benefit to humans.”

In this study of anxiety and intelligence.patients with general anxiety disorder (GAD) were compared with healthy volunteers to judge the relationship between intelligence quotient(IQ), worry and metabolism(新陈代谢)of choline in the subcortical white matter. In the group of normal volunteers, high IQ was connected with a lower degree of worry, but in those patients with GAD,high IQ was connected with a higher degree of worry. The relation between IQ and worry was important in both the GAD group and the healthy group. However,in the former, the effect was positive and,in the latter, the effect was negative.18 healthy volunteers(8 males and 10 females)and 26 patients with GAD(12 males and 14 females)served as subjects.

Earlier studies have indicated that excessive(过多的)worry tends to exist both in people with higher intelligence and lower intelligence, and less so in people of moderate(适度的)intelligence. It has been supposed that people with lower intelligence suffer more anxiety because they achieve less success in life.

  信不信由你,一个人的焦虑未必全是坏事。最新的研究表明,过多的担忧事实上是和一个人的智商共同发展的,甚至有可能对人的智力提高有促进作用。

5.In the past, people thought too much worry______.

A.was nothing serious since it had no effect

  B.encouraged them to go ahead

C.was good for people to predict future

D.was bad for them to live happily

解析:细节理解题。根据第二段Too much worry is generally seen as a negative characteristic and high intelligence as a positive one可知,人们以往对焦虑的看法不好。

  答案:D

6.What does the underlined phrase“take no chances”in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

  A.Lose scores in competition.

B.Choose to help somebody in positive ways.

C.Be cautious not to risk doing something.

D.Be anxious for another chance to take.

解析:词义猜测题。根据上文提到avoid dangerous situations及下文have higher survival rates可推知,焦虑使得人们谨慎行事,这些人会有更高的生存率。由此可推知,画线词组的含义为“不冒险”。

  答案:C

8.What can we learn from the passage?

A.The research was based on the metabolism of choline.

B.A normal person with high IQ often thinks too little.

C.The testees were more than 50 people in the experiment.

D.The intelligence is determined by the production of the choline.

解析:推理判断题。根据第一段...high intelligence and worry are both connected with brain activity, which is measured by the reduction of choline in the subcortical white matter of the brain可知,高智商和焦虑都与大脑活动有关,这是通过大脑皮层下的白色物种的胆碱的减少来衡量的。再根据第三段...judge the relationship between intelligence quotient(IQ),worry and metabolism of choline in the subcortical white matter可推知,这个研究是基于胆碱的新陈代谢进行的。
