Gwendolyn Brooks (June 7,1917-December 3,2000),was the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize for Literature.

Beginning writing at the age of eleven,Gwendolyn Brooks wrote hundreds of poems and had more than twenty books published during her lifetime. She found most of her writing materials looking out of her window. Her poems described conditions among the poor, racial inequality in the black community as well as the struggles of black women. She described the anger many blacks had about racial injustice and the feeling of being different.

Being an expert at the language of poetry, she used her works to increase the understanding of black culture and to criticize those who did not show respect for the poor.

Brooks’ first book of poetry,A Street in Bronzeville earned instant praise. She was included among the “Ten Young Women of the Year”.She won the Pulitzer Prize for her second book called Annie Allen,a collection of poetry about the life of a woman who experiences loneliness, loss, death and poverty.

Her next work was a novel called Maud Martha, which received little notice when it was first published. But now it’s considered an important work and its main ideas about the difficult life of many women are popular among female writers today.

By the end of the 1960s,Brooks’ poetry expanded from the everyday experiences of people to important political issues(问题).That became obvious in her next collection called In the Mecca.

In 1976,Gwendolyn Brooks became the first black woman to be elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters. She received a lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1989.And she was named the 1994 Jefferson Lecturer, which is the highest honor given by the federal government for works in the humanities.
