  Life in the Clear

Transparent animals let light pass through their bodies the same way light passes through a window. These animals typically live between the surface of the ocean and a depth of about 3,300 feet—as far as most light can reach. Most of them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a simple touch. Sonke Johnsen, a scientist in biology, says, “These animals live through their life alone. They never touch anything unless they’re eating it, or unless something is eating them.”

And they are as clear as glass. How does an animal become see-through? It’s trickier than you might think.

The objects around you are visible because they interact with light. Light typically travels in a straight line. But some materials slow and scatter(散射) light, bouncing it away from its original path. Others absorb light, stopping it dead in its tracks. Both scattering and absorption make an object look different from other objects around it, so you can see it easily.

But a transparent object doesn’t absorb or scatter light, at least not very much, Light can pass through it without bending or stopping. That means a transparent object doesn’t look very different from the surrounding air or water. You don’t see it ----you see the things behind it.

To become transparent, an animal needs to keep its body from absorbing or scattering light. Living materials can stop light because they contain pigments(色素) that absorb specific colors of light. But a transparent animal doesn’t have pigments, so its tissues won’t absorb light. According to Johnsen, avoiding absorption is actually easy. The real challenge is preventing light from scattering.

Animals are built of many different materials----skin, fat, and more----and light moves through each at a different speed. Every time light moves into a material with a new speed, it bends and scatters. Transparent animals use different tricks to fight scattering. Some animals are simply very small or extremely flat. Without much tissue to scatter light, it is easier to be see—through. Others build a large, clear mass of non-living jelly-lie(果冻状的)material and spread themselves over it .

Larger transparent animals have the biggest challenge, because they have to make all the different tissues in their bodies slow down light exactly as much as water does. They need to look uniform. But how they’re doing it is still unknown. One thing is clear for these larger animals, staying transparent is an active process. When they die, they turn a non-transparent milky white.

21.According to Paragraph 1, transparent animals_______.

  A. stay in groups

  B. can be easily damaged

  C. appear only in deep ocean

  D. are beautiful creatures

22.The underlined word “dead” in Paragraph 3 means__________.

  A. silently

  B. gradually

  C. regularly

  D. completely

23.One way for an animal to become transparent is to ________.

  A. change the direction of light travel

  B. gather materials to scatter light.

  C. avoid the absorption of light

  D. grow bigger to stop light.

24.The last paragraph tells us that larger transparent animals________.

  A. move more slowly in deep water

  B. stay see-through even after death

  C. produce more tissues for their survival

  D. take effective action to reduce light spreading

Eight-year-old Cieran Kelso and Winter the dolphin have more things in common than most people and dolphins. That is because they both have prosthetic limbs(假肢)!

Winter, the star of the movie Dolphin Tale, is Cieran’s idol because they both swim with the help of prosthetic flippers. Florida’s Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where Winter lives, usually only lets visitors swim in the dolphin tank every three weeks or so, but when its chief officer David Yates heard Cieran’s story, he said he must make a swim-and-greet happen.

Local tourism officials flew Cieran and his family to the aquarium from England after a year of planning. His parents had a hard time keeping the surprise a secret for so long! They told Cieran that the trip was just going to be a business trip for his father Gary, and it wasn’t until they were halfway there that flight attendants announced that the trip was actually for Cieran to meet Winter!

Cieran caught a disease that cost both of his legs and most of his fingertips. He still loves to play sports like soccer and gymnastics with his friends, but it’s taken him a little longer to learn how to swim. To help him catch up with his friends, Cieran’s father Gary, with the help of a prosthetic specialist, created prosthetic flippers so that Cieran could move just like his idol, Winter.

“His first words when he saw the Gary were ‘Winter’s disabled, just like me. It’s just been a dolphin in a film for a long time and now it’s real… It’s just a dream come true,’ ” said Gary. Once in the tank he fed Winter fish and played with her for more than an hour. And he said he could have swum “for a million hours” if he was allowed to!

After the swim Cieran announced he wants to work at the aquarium so that he can always look after Winter, his new best friend. “The feeling was great and emotional to be swimming with a dolphin. I love dolphins. But the best dolphin I’ve ever loved is Winter,” he said.

25.What is the main idea of the passage?

  A. A disabled boy met a dolphin with disability.

  B. A boy is swimming with a dolphin alone.

  C. A dream of meeting a dolphin comes true.

  D. A boy becomes a friend of a dolphin

26.What can we know about Winter?

  A. She played a leading role in Dolphin Tale.

  B. She was an idol for most kids in England.

  C. She swam with visitors three times a week.

  D. She performed a swim-and-great in the tank.

27.From what Gary said in paragraph 5, we know that ________.

  A. Cieran showed pity for Winter

  B. Cieran had a dream to see a film

  C. Cieran was glad to meet Winter

  D. Cieran found Winter a real disabled dolphin

Lots of human foods are dangerous to pets, many of which may seem tasty to our pets but can prove deadly if eaten. It can be very appealing to offer pets food from the table, but pets should not be given human food unless recommended by veterinarians (兽医).

If you suspect your pet may have eaten a dangerous food, contact veterinarians immediately. In many cases, early recognition and treatment are very important.

  Chocolate, Coffee, and Caffeine

Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that is toxic (有毒的) to dogs in large quantities. Chocolate also contains caffeine, which is found in coffee, tea, and certain soft drinks. Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine and caffeine. For example, dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain more of these compounds (化合物) than milk chocolate, so a dog would need to eat more milk chocolate to become ill. However, even a few ounces of chocolate can be enough to cause illness in a small dog, so no amount or type of chocolate should be considered "safe" for a dog to eat. Chocolate toxicity can cause vomiting (呕吐), diarrhea, rapid or irregular heart rate, restlessness, muscle tremors, and seizures. Death can occur within 24 hours of intake.

  Grapes and Raisins

Grapes and raisins can cause sudden kidney failure in .cats and dogs. It is unknown what the toxic agent is in these fruits. However, clinical (临床的) signs can occur within 24 hours of eating and include vomiting, diarrhea, and tiredness.

Other signs of illness relate to the eventual shutdown of kidney functioning.

  Garlic and Onions

Garlic and onions contain chemicals damaging red blood cells in cats and dogs. Affected red blood cells can damage or lose their ability to carry oxygen effectively. Cooking these foods does not reduce their potential toxicity. Fresh, cooked, and/or powdered garlic and/or onions are commonly found in baby food, which is sometimes given to animals when they are sick, so be sure to read food labels carefully.

Many cases of human food toxicity in pets are accidental. A pet may find and chew on a package of gum or candy, or steal food from a countertop (灶台) or table. The best way to prevent this is to keep all food item: in closed cupboard or areas inaccessible to pets. This may be particularly difficult during the holiday season, when more candy, chocolate, fruit baskets, and other food item: are around. During these times, increased alertness (警惕性) can help prevent pets finding and eating dangerous foods.

Children should also be taught to never give candy, gum, or other human foods to pets.

28.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?

  A. You can give pets human food with the recommendation of veterinarians.

  B. All human foods are deadly to pets.

  C. It is useless to turn to veterinarians after your pets have eaten dangerous food.

  D. It is easy to judge whether a pet has eaten dangerous food.

29.What effect do chocolate and grapes have in common if eaten by pets?

  A. They both can cause pets' sudden kidney failure.

  B. They both contain different amounts of theobromine and caffeine.

  C. They both can cause pets to vomit.

  D. They both can cause pets' hearts to beat irregularly.

30.Which of the following statements is true?

  A. It is safe for pets to eat cooked garlic and onions.

  B. Baby food is always safe to pets.

  C. Many pets eat the human food by chance.

  D. Affected red blood cells can't carry oxygen at all.

31.What is the purpose of the author's writing this article?

  A. To tell children never to give candy, gum, or other human food to pets.

  B. To warn us not to give pets human foods as we like.

  C. To tell us some human foods which are dangerous to pets.

  D. To call on us to take good care of pets.

Top 6 most interesting cities in the USA

  San Francisco, California.

The Most Interesting City in America has long been recognized as one of the most unique places in the world. From the high towers of the Golden Gate Bridge to the rocky walls of Alcatraz; from the twin peaks in the heart of the city to the downtown cable cars; the landscape of San Francisco is as famous as it is beautiful. There is more to this city than a handful of nice attractions, however. Some will be surprised to learn, for example, that San Francisco is among the most diverse cities in the country--sixth out of the 200 cities we examined.

  New Orleans, Louisiana

A city filled with magic and rich with history, its mix of cultural influences are as unique as they are interesting, ranging from Spanish Creole, to French, to American South. That cultural heritage becomes twice as interesting when accompanied by a drink: on New Orleans’s Bourbon Street, bars often stay open around the clock, and its legal to take alcohol into the street in a “to-go” cup. Plus, with nearly six drinking establishments for every 10,000 residents, New Orleans is the only city that has a greater concentration of bars than San Francisco.

  Austin, Texas

There’s a lot going on in Austin. It is the capital of the second most heavily populated state in the country. It is home to the largest public university in the country. Each year it plays host to several of the nation’s most significant arts festivals, including Austin City Limits and South by Southwest. While this may be too much action for the weak heart, many outsiders are finding Austin’s pull too strong to fight: a population growth rate of 2.4% make Austin the 10th most rapidly growing city in our study.

  Washington, DC

The only East Coast city to be in the top five, the nation’s capital is a city at once filled with history and ripe with opportunity. Landmarks such as the National Mall, the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument misrepresent a city that is anything but stuck in the past. The District is a destination for many of the country’s most ambitious and energetic individuals, people who hope to reshape the very future of a nation.

  Oakland, California

The population of Oakland ranked in our analysis as the second most diverse in the country, behind only Honolulu, Hawaii. That diversity has contributed to Oakland’s deserved reputation as a cultural capital: it claims among its current and former residents Oscar-winners (Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks), musicians (Billy Joe Armstrong, Keyshia Cole), influential writers (Daniel Alarcon, Jack London) and even the inventor of the popsicle (冰棒)(Frank Epperson).

  Seattle, Washington

Seattle has always attracted interesting, and some might say strange people, and many cultural movements have arisen from the region over the years. Today’s Seattle is more tech, but that doesn’t make the Emerald City any less appealing to outsiders: Seattle ranked 6th on our list for population growth.

32.Which two cities are described as diverse in the passage?

  A. Austin and New Orleans

  B. New Orleans and Seattle

  C. San Francisco and Austin

  D. San Francisco and Oakland

33.Which city has the greatest appeal for those who resolve to make a difference to the country?

  A. Washington

  B. Seattle

  C. Oakland

  D. Austin

34.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. Austin has the largest university of the country.

  B. Seattle becomes less attractive as it is now more tech.

  C. New Orleans has the largest number of bars in the country.

  D. San Francisco offers nothing more than a handful of attractions.

35.The passage is probably taken from _________.

  A. a health magazine

  B. a travel guide

  C. a science report

  D. a geography textbook

  Chinese Characters Help Improve IQ

Chinese characters may be the reason why local children aged between six and 12 display a higher IQ than their peers in Britain, Germany and Australia.

The pictographic nature of the Chinese writing system helps to inspire the thinking ability of children. Their intelligence develops better while they learn the characters.

  36.

I am a retired Chinese-language teacher from Malaysia. From my experiences, I have long noticed that Chinese-medium-educated students always excel in mathematics as compared with those taught in other languages.

37.The words for numerals are all monosyllabic (单音节的) in Chinese. In contrast, their equivalents (对应词) in Malay have two or three syllables, like sa -tu, du-a, ti-ga,em-pat, li-ma,e-nam.

  38.Their English equivalents—one, two, three, four, five, six,seven, eight,nine,ten, hundred, thousand,million - include multi-syllabic words, too.

39.Children easily find that it is in the Chinese language that they can do the job fastest. Children taught in Chinese find it easier to learn numerals and can do their calculations much faster. This has been repeatedly proved by reports on Chinese-medium-educated students winning prizes in International Mathematics Olympiads.

Mathematics has a lot to do with IQ tests, as it is well proved that children good at numbers tend to have a stronger reasoning ability.

40.Teach the children Chinese so that they can think in the language. Keep their cutting edge in mathematics with the aid of Chinese characters, and this will improve their IQ.

  A. The secret lies in the Chinese characters.

B.They are much quicker at learning languages.

  C. This was discovered by Dr Zeng, assistant professor of psychology at NUS.

  D. The difference between them is striking when it comes to memorizing the multiplication table.

  E. So, I would like to call on Chinese parents to treasure the language of our ancestors.

  F. It takes a longer time to pronounce these words.

  G. Therefore, I'm going to teach mathematics if possible.
