  Unit 16 Stories

  Part A

  A

People have been painting pictures for at least 30,000 years. The earliest pictures were painted by people who hunted animals. They used to paint pictures of the animals they wanted to catch and kill.Pictures of this kind have been found on the walls of caves in France and Spain. No one knows why they were painted there.Perhaps the painters thought that their pictures would help them to catch these animals.Or perhaps human beings have always wanted to tell stories in pictures.

About 5,000 years ago the Egyptians and other people in the Near East began to use pictures as a kind of writing. They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their language. The signs these people used became a kind of alphabet.

The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture-writing and pictures together. When an important person died, scenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buried. Some of these pictures are like modern comic strip(连环漫画)stories. It has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip. But,for the Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way of writing simple. The ordinary people could not understand it.

By the year 1,000 BC,people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea had developed a simpler system of writing. The signs they used were very easy to write, and there were fewer of them than in the Egyptian system. This was because each sign,or letter, represented only one sound in their language. The Greeks developed this system and formed the letter of the Greek alphabet. The Romans copied the idea, and Roman alphabet is now used all over the world.

These days,we can write down a story,or record information, without using pictures. But we still need pictures of all kinds:drawings, photographs, signs and diagrams. We find them everywhere:in books and newspapers,in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and work.Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily, and they can make a story much more interesting.

We all know how to save money when booking a hotel room. 1 Here are four things that can help you save even more money on your next hotel stay.

Stay at a hotel that offers free breakfast.

This is one of the most overlooked ways of saving money when traveling. If you can get your breakfast for free, you are going to save at least $5 every morning. 2 This way you can eat bacon, eggs, and pancakes instead of cold cereal and fruit.

  Free Internet.

In some hotels, the Internet service is everything you want.In addition to being free,it is wireless and the signal strength is strong from check-in to check-out.In other hotels, however, they charge $34.99/day or more for wireless Internet access. 3

  Free shuttle service.

The best way to avoid renting a car,but still be able to get around is to stay at a hotel with a free shuttle service. 4 Some hotels will take you wherever you want to go,within reason.Others have mileage limitations. And of course, there are some that will only take you to and from the airport or bus station.

  5

For instance,if you are visiting Disney World it makes good sense to choose a hotel in the resort. Then you don’t have to drive to and from the park every day.Not only will this possibly save you from renting a car,but it can save a lot of money on gas, which is getting more expensive by the minute.

A.To make this even better, find a hotel with a hot breakfast.

B.Stay close to the destination you are visiting.

C.But the price of the room isn’t the whole story.

D.It is important to ask up front what the shuttle service includes.

E.Most people only think about ways to save on the cost of their room when booking a hotel.

F.Make sure you check on Internet charges before you book.

  G.Free happy hour.

My name is Jake, and I recently went on the diving trip with my family.I have never gone diving in open water before, like a river or a lake.We couldn’t decide when to go at first, but then my friends in a seaside village offer to let us stay with them,so we went to the coast there.I was a bit of worried as we were swimming around because we’d heard there might have sharks in the area.So I was very afraid as some big sea animal were swimming towards us—and they turned out to be friendly! They played us in the water. We even managed to get some photos.Anyway,it was the good trip ever.

  1.第1句:the→a。go on a trip“去旅行”为固定搭配,应把the改为a。

  2.第2句:have→had。

3.第3句:when→where。but后分句中的stay with them及went to the coast there表明,应用表示地点的where。

a bit修饰形容词、副词或动词,a bit of只能修饰不可数名词。

  6.第4句:have→be。此处为there be句型。

  8.第5句:and→but。

  9.第6句:在us前加with。play with sb.“与某人玩耍”。
