A group of class friends, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon

  41

into complaints about pressure in work and life.

While the guests were talking, the professor went to the

  42

  and prepared coffee. Then he

  43

with a large pot of coffee and a variety of cups — porcelain (瓷) , plastic, glass, crystal, some

  44

looking, some expensive, some delicate (精致) — telling them to

  45

  themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee

46 hand, the professor said, “If you noticed, all the nice-looking, expensive cups were taken up,

  47

behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is

  48

for you to choose the best for yourselves, that is the

  49

of your problems and pressure. Be assured that the cup itself

  50

no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. Though

  51

all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, you

  52

the best cups directly. And then you began

  53

  each other’s cups.”

The professor paused and then went on, “Now consider this: Life is the coffee and the jobs, money and

  54

in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and

  55

The happiest people don’t have the best of everything. They just

Nearly thirty years ago, I went rock climbing for the first time with a group in New Mexico. It sounded exciting and

  31

! Anyone who has ever climbed knows that you can easily

  32

where there is no place to go, or so. It seems you’re stuck. But

  33

is not an option. You cannot just stand there and feel

  34

for yourself. You cannot go back down, so you are

  35

  to become solution minded.

I held on for dear life that day, on my first climb,

  36

about three quarters of the way to the top. It seemed that there was no place to go, and

  37

to put my hands or feet so that I could

  38

upward. But after a few minutes had passed I realized that I had to do

  39

. I began to look again for a(n)

  40

  . I then noticed a

  41

sticking out, which I might be able to grab with my hands and

  42

myself up to where I could have a small foothold. I called to the instructor at the top and asked him if that rock would hold my

  43

if I pulled myself up. I can

  44

remember his answer, “I don’t know. Why don’t you try it and see?”

In life we many times feel “stuck”. We wonder how we got into the

  45

that we are presently in. It is in those times that we need to be careful about how we define(定义)it. Have we failed,

  46

  is it just a setback?

Setbacks, adversity(逆境), or being stuck is never an indication that you are a

  47

unless you decide that those things define your life as a failure. For people looking for a(n)

  48

to be a failure, there are always plenty to choose from. But if you want your life to be successful, setbacks, adversity and being stuck are

  49

stepping-stones to your success. Success minded people

  50

those kinds of things for what they really are. They know that for them, they are only temporary.

The ringing of the phone runs through my head, telling me someone needs help. I pick it up and

  4

. We try to help the teens realize the danger they could be in

  5

giving them advice. All we can do is to ask questions. We also try to find out where the teens would go and how they would survive. We give them a phone number if they

  6

don’t want to live in their “prison”.

  “I don’t want to

  7

any more” is something we hear, and suicide (自杀) calls are some of the hardest to . We try to discover why they want to take their lives and how serious they are by asking them to rate it on a scale of one to ten. One means they are

  9

suicide but haven’t decided how, and ten means they are always thinking about it and have a

go up意为“上升;被兴建”;set up意为“建立;成立”;take up意为“拿起;开始从事”;pick up意为“恢复,拾起”。

owe…to… 故选A。

decide to do sth.

故选A。

故选A。

On hearing his words“一听到他的话”。

故选A。

故选A。
