Tea production in Sri Lanka has thrived for decades. The tea gardens in Hatton, Sri Lanka are actually large tea estates. The best tea usually comes from plants grown on high grounds and the cool hilltops with rows and rows of tea plants. The plants are about one meter apart. The plant is often pruned so that it remains only 60 to 90 centimeters high. Pruning is important because it encourages the growth of tender shoots, or young leaves.
It is from these shoots that the best tea is got.
Practically all the tea pickers are women. The estates prefer to employ women pickers because they are more careful. Their thin fingers can easily remove the twin leaves and new shoots from the plants, which are the parts used for processing tea. The pickers carry large baskets into which they throw their pickings. A skilled worker can harvest between 9 and 14 kilograms of tea leaves a day. Usually new shoots can be picked from the plants about every ten or fifteen days.
Processing tea shoots into our familiar dry tea leaves requires great care and skill. There are various methods of processing depending on the type of tea required. For black tea, the young green leaves are first spread out on shelves to dry. This process removes much of its water and the leaves become soft. After this, the leaves are passed through heavy rollers. This operation will press the leaves for juices which give the tea both its color and taste. Then the leaves are spread out on floors and left to ferment (发酵) under wet conditions. Fermentation develops the rich taste of black tea. The fermented leaves are then dried with a hotair blower until they become rolledup black leaves. The final step is to sort and grade them before the black tea is ready for sale to countries all over the world.

Lawmakers in Taiwan are considering banning children under 2 from using iPads and other electronic gadgets (小装置). Those under 18 will also not be allowed to use digital media for “an improper period of time”. Should iPads be banned for kids?
Here
are
some
comments
from
different countries.
Nancy (UK): The main problem with technology, and more or less the only one I feel, is eyesight. Because of staring at a computer screen all day, their eyesight could go bad. For 0-2 years, iPads should be forbidden ; for 3-5 years, it can be allowed for one hour per day; for 6-18 years, it can be allowed for two hours per day. Children need to experience the outdoors-they need to spend time in “green” spaces.
Lily (China) : I have seen other parents buying iPads for their children at a young age and then leave them to use it as they please. That I do not agree with. These gadgets are not babysitters.
Nor should they replace parental interaction or rule. I believe it is more important to educate parents than cautioning against the use of technology by young children.
Diana (Australia): The law is so unclear that it fails to define a proper length of time for the kids to use digital media.
Shayla (US): While I do think technology should be limited for younger children, I'm surprised that it is regarded as something that should never be used from 0-2. My daughter has many developmental delays and iPads are recommended for regular use by three of her doctors.
In addition, children who are weak in their ability
to
communicate
would
benefit
from learning sign language and also signing videos which help them pick up the language quickly.
Ryan (Canada): I believe technology use at an early age can benefit a child's mental development, not harm
it.
Certain
video
games
require
reading comprehension skills to advance in the game and have been called the “Gateway Drug to Literacy”.
Mike (US): The greater availability and use of technology such as iPads can have a negative influence on children, especially in terms of their physical activity levels and their social, mental and emotional wellbeing.
Studies
show that
due
to
technology overuse,
1
in
3
children
entering
school
are developmentally delayed, 1 in 4 are obese, 1 in 6 have a diagnosed mental illness, and 1 in 11 children are now addicted to technology.
4. What is the Chinese woman's opinion about electronic gadgets?
A. It's a real benefit to children as long as they are used correctly.
B. They
allow
children
to
be
creative
or communicative.
C. Children using them may harm their mental and physical development.
D. Making parents realize the harm of children's using them is more important than banning.
5. Among the six people, who support the idea of banning children under 2 from using iPads and other electronic gadgets?
A. Mike and Ryan.
B. Nancy and Mike.
C. Nancy and Ryan.
D. Dianna and Shayla.
6. For Shayla, which is regarded as being a result of using iPads?
A. IPads serve as a tool for kids to learn a language.
B. Kids can become more independent and free themselves from their parents.
C. IPads are helpful for parents to babysit their children.
D. IPads can never do harm to kids' physical development.
