Do you have such kind of experience? On a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.

The same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary time, you will look at yourself up and down, to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward others' stare with you that way. Eyes do speak, right?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive(冒犯的). But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to avert(转移) his gaze, he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is admiring her.

However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking. As for the listener, he will, to a certain extent, look continuously at the speaker, to tell him that he is attentive.

If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to dominate(控制) you,

There are American equivalents(相等物), ysterical that we call the “toilet” the “bathroom” and they really double over(弯腰) with laughter when we ask for the“restroom”. Etymology, the study of words and word roots, may sound like the kind of thing done by boring librarians in small, dusty rooms.Yet etymologists actually have a uniquely interesting job. They are in many ways just like archaeologists (考古学家) digging up the physical history of people and events. The special aspect of etymology is that it digs up history, ield to explore history through words. As a language, English has an extraordinary number of words. This is partly due to its ability to adapt foreign words so readily. For example, 揈nglish?words such as kindergarten

A(from German), croissant (from French), and cheetah (from Hindi) have become part of the language with little or no change from their original sounds and spellings. So English-language etymologists have a vast world of words to explore.

Another enjoyable thing about etymology for most word experts is solving word mysteries(谜).No, anguage experts have pursued is how English came to have the phrase OK.Though it is one of the most commonly used expressions, its exact beginning is a puzzle even to this day.Even its spelling is not entirely consistent梪nless you spell it Okay, it is hard even to call it a word.

Etymologists have been able to narrow OK's origin down to a, likely, although not certain, source(来源).It became widely used around the time of Martin Van Buren's run for president in 1840. His nickname was Old Kinderhook. What troubles word experts about this explanation is that the phrase appeared in some newspapers before Van Buren became well known. It is likely that Van Buren could be called its primary source. Etymologists will doubtlessly keep searching for the initial source. However, it is clear that OK's popularity and reputation have topped those of the American president to whom it has been most clearly linked.

()15.The author mentions the words like “croissant” in Paragraph 2 to indicate________.words have changed a lot in the two languages

B.what English-language etymologists are exploring now-English-speaking people()16.The underlined word “pursued” in Paragraph 4 means“________”.A.looked upon

The family across the street lived a much better life. They just had two daughters and they were often seen wearing new dresses. The younger girl named Anna was of my age. One afternoon, she walked on the street wearing a beautiful white dress. She looked like an angel in that dress. I, together with many little girls, followed her. We just couldn't keep our eyes off her dress. We all wished we would have such a dress one day!

That day, after coming back, I told my mom that I wanted a dress like that. My mom frowned(皱眉). She thought such a beautiful dress like that must cost an arm and a leg, s invited to her home with some other girls. After that party, I asked if I could try on her white dress. “Of course,” she said, “and you can take it if you like it.” I couldn't believe my ears. He always said, “A man has to keep busy to stay out of trouble.” Leigh wasn't sure how much trouble Grandpa could get into anyway, since he was such a nice man, but Leigh tried to listen to his advice. Besides, she liked to help on his birdhouses.

Grandpa's shop was full of well-oiled and carefully-kept tools. Whenever he used something,

sure to clean up each time he worked on something.

It wasn't too fun cleaning up, but it was nice to watch him cut boards to exact lengths. It was nice to see the drill put in holes for screws(螺丝) to go in cleanly. It was like being a doctor, d. The best part of building was seeing all the pieces come together in the final form.

The last steps always included lacquer or paint, to help protect Grandpa's hard work from the weather. His birdhouses lasted for years. If he didn't coat them properly, the sun and rain would turn the wood gray and weak in a short period of time. No, he always made sure to do things right. Even if he put rocks or other cute decorations on them, it was done right and made to last.

Grandpa was a hard worker, but he was also smart and generous. He let Leigh keep the birdhouses sometimes, but only if he got to help hang it up or set the post for it. It had to be done just right, after all.

I am Li Hua, a student in Grade 3. I have read the notice that our school radio station needs two English announcers, so I'm writing to introduce myself.

First of all, I am greatly interested in broadcasting. I have received some professional training in my spare time, hoping that I can work as an announcer in the future. Besides, I am good at English, and won the first prize in the English Speech Competition last year. So I think I am highly qualified for the job. If I am admitted, I will try my best to serve the students. I sincerely hope that you can give me a chance to work for the school radio station.

I am looking forward to your early reply.

big cities. It is certain that private cars have brought us a lot of convenience and comfort. But meanwhile, they have brought more traffic jams too. The situation is sometimes so serious that people have to queue for miles in streets waiting and wasting their time on the way. And serious pollution is another problem caused by the many vehicles. Therefore, the government has to limit the number of cars running in the streets.

In my opinion, public transportation services such as buses, taxis and subways should be encouraged in order to settle the problem. And people's awareness to protect our environment also needs to be promoted. If possible, they are encouraged to take public transportation, or even ride bikes or walk, which will not only save energy but also benefit their health.
