(2016·日照校际联合检测)At least three people are dead in the Philippines now that Typhoon Hagupit has landed.

The typhoon, which hit the eastern Philippines over the weekend, has blown down trees and sent more than 650thousand people into shelters before weakening.

“There were very strong winds last night. The roof was beginning to move, and rain was getting inside the rooms,” said a villager.

The storm hit with gusts (强风) of over 100 miles per hour. And while the storm has slowed considerably from the super typhoon level it had last week, Hagupit still remains strong enough to create more damage.

Christopher Perez is a local weather forecaster. He says, “We are continuing to expect bad weather and rough ocean waves. Threats of possible flash floods and landslides (滑坡) as well as possible storm waves are occurring in coastal areas.”

Hagupit is expected to roll into the South China Sea tomorrow.

It's currently going westward toward the southern tip of Vietnam, meaning it's unlikely to affect China.

Hagupit's strength in the Philippines is much less severe than Typhoon Haiyan, which rolled through the country in 2017.

attracting thousands of visitors during an expo in Tokyo as Japan adapts to changes in society.

Robots, such as the sound sensitive Chapit, answer simple questions and even joke with

people to help them fight loneliness and stay alert in old age.

Japan has one of the world's fastestageing societies and the government predicts that by 2050

the proportion of people over 65 will reach 40 percent.“Many older people in Japan live alone and have no one to talk to,” said Kazuya Kitamura representative of the expo organizer.“Communication robots accompany people and don't mind listening to the same stories over and over again.”

recognize the user's centre of gravity, is designed to help elderly move around without pressing

  buttons, using joysticks

The robot can also help find misplaced glasses by identifying them with a sensor.

Other robots, such as the awardwinning “DiGRO” can support busy parents who have little time to play with their children. The robot can use the Internet to find a simple image and then draw pictures, keeping children company while parents work.

researchers, such as Kiyoshi Matsumoto, a professor at the University of Tokyo, struggle to attract sponsors for more expensive projects.

“We have developed a robot that can assist many people, but we still haven't found a sponsor,” said Matsumoto, who added that the cost of the machine, if massproduced, would be comparable to that of a car. “In the current economic environment there are few companies willing to invest in such a costly project,”

That is why the word "heart" is used in so many expressions about emotional situations.

One such expression is to "lose your heart" to someone. When that happens, you have fallen in love. But if the person who won your heart does not love you, then you are sure to have a "broken heart." In your pain and sadness, you may decide that the person you loved is "hard-hearted," and in fact, has a "heart of stone."

You may decide to "pour out your heart" to a friend. Telling someone about your personal problems can often make you feel better.

If your friend does not seem to understand how painful your broken heart is, you may ask her to "have a heart." You are asking your friend to show some sympathy for your situation. Your friend "has her heart in the right place" if she says she is sorry, and shows great concern for how you feel.

Your friend may, however, warn you not to "wear your heart on your sleeve." In other words, do not let everyone see how lovesick you are. When your heart is on your sleeve you are showing your deepest emotions.

If your friend says "my heart bleeds for you," she means the opposite. She is a cold-hearted person who does not really care about your situation.

In the ever-popular motion picture, "The Wizard of Oz,"(绿野仙踪) the Tin Man seeks a heart. He wanted to feel the emotion of love, and was seeking help from the powerful Wizard of Oz to find a heart.

The Cowardly Lion, in the same movie, did “have a heart”. But he lacked courage and wanted to ask the Wizard of Oz to give him some. You could say that the cowardly lion was "chicken-hearted." That is another way of describing someone who is not very brave. A chicken is not noted for its bravery. Thus, someone who is chicken-hearted does not have much courage.

When you are frightened or concerned, your "heart is in your mouth." You might say, for example, that your heart was in your mouth when you asked a bank to lend you some money to pay for a new house.

1.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The heart was the center of a person's emotions.

B.There are many expressions about heart and what do they mean.

C.We should learn some expressions about “heart”.

D.It is important to learn some expressions about “heart”

2.How many expressions about “Heart” are mentioned in the passage?

  A.10

  B.8

  C.9

  D.11

.If you hear one of your family members is hurt in a traffic accident, you will feel ________.

  A.heart is in your mouth.

B.have your heart in the right place

  C. wear your heart on your sleeve

  D.lose your heart

.Why did the writer mention"The Wizard of Oz,"in the passage?

A.To show that it is ever popular.

B.To introduce a film to the readers

C.To give some more examples about the phrases.

D.To show that the Tin Man is not brave.

The word “labyrinth”, or maze, refers to a complex structure of interconnecting passages through which it is difficult to find one's way. The most famous labyrinth is found in Greek mythology (神话). Designed by Daedalus for King Minos of Knossos to contain the fierce Minotaur (a half man and half bull monster), Daedalus' labyrinth was so complex that he, himself, could hardly find his way through it and, having successfully done so, Minos put him and his son, Icarus, into prison in a high tower in case he told the secret of the maze. Daedalus and Icarus fled using the feathers of birds bound together by wax to form wings and fly from the tower. Sadly, Icarus flew too close to the sun, melting the wax of his wings, and fell into the sea to drown.

  The

  other

  well known labyrinth

  was

a pyramid complex (金字塔群) of many courts in Egypt, built at Hawara for Amenemhet Ⅲ, a ruler of the 12th Dynasty (1844-1797 BC). There were twelve separate courts of large size — six in a row facing north, six south — and all connected by corridors (走廊). Inside, the building was of two stories and contained about three thousand rooms, of which one half were underground, and the other half directly above them. The labyrinth was described by the Greek historian Herodotus,

“The Egyptians in charge refused to let me see the underground ones, as they contain the tombs of the kings. I did actually see the upper rooms,

and it is hard to believe that they are the work of men. The mysterious

and complicated passages from room to room and from court to court were an endless wonder to me.” The great Egyptian labyrinth fell into ruin at some unknown point and was pulled down. So great was the site as a source of building materials that a small town grew up around the ruins. Nothing remains of this great architectural wonder today except the destroyed pyramid of Amenemhet Ⅲ at Hawara by the oasis

  (绿洲)

  of Faiyum.

D.escaped with wings made by themselves

3.What do we know about the Egyptian labyrinth?

A.It had about 1,500 upper rooms.

B.It contained twelve stories in total.

C.It was built about 5,000 years ago.

4.The two labyrinths mentioned in the text ________.

  A.were both constructed for pleasure

B.were both built for the kings

  C.both have many historical records

  D.both include many courts
