(2015·杭州五校联考)Many people believe that teaching children music makes them smarter, better able to learn new things. But the organizers of a new study say there's no scientific evidence that early musical training affects the intelligence of young people.

An estimated 80 percent of American adults think music lessons improve children's ability to learn or their performance in school. They say that the satisfaction for learning to play a new song helps a child express creativity.

Researchers at Harvard University, however, have found that there's one thing

musical training does not do. They say it does not make children more intelligent. Samuel Mehr is a graduate student at Harvard's School of Education. He said it is wrong to think that learning to play a musical instrument improves a child's intellectual development. He says the evidence comes from studies that measured the mental ability of two groups of 4-year-olds and their parents. One group attended music class, the other went to a class that places importance on the visual arts — arts that can be seen.

“The evidence there is ‘no’. We found no evidence for any advantage on any of these tests for the kids participating in these music classes,”said Mehr. Samuel Mehr says researchers have carried out many studies in an effort to learn whether musical training can make children smarter. He says the results have been mixed. He says only one study seems to show a small percentage increase in IQ, intellectual scores among students after one year of music lessons. He does not believe that IQ is a good measure of children's intelligence. He says researchers in his study compared how well children in the musical training group did on mental processing tasks or projects, then the results were compared to those of children who did not take lessons. There was no evidence that the musical training group did much better on the mental tasks than the other group.

The researchers confirmed the results with a larger group of children and their parents. Mr. Mehr says music lessons may not offer children a fast easy way to gain entry to the best schools later in their life. But he says the training is still important for cultural reasons. In his words, “We teach music because music is important for us.”

There is a proverb that went “Honesty is the best policy.” I still remember the day that I was left alone at home.I broke a vase by chances, which was quite treasured by my father. When he came back, I was too fearful that I didn't tell the truth. The cat was his excuse. My father said nothing, and I could read his distrust. The next morning, after a restless night, I admitted to my father that it was my fault.I saw relief in his eyes.He smiled at me.From now on, I never told lies.My honesty won me great trust from others, which benefited from my growth a lot.It is the “crack” that is reminding me all the time that I have long way to go.With the light through the crack I can see the road ahead clear.

根据文章第一段第二句“But the organizers of a new study say there's no scientific evidence that early musical training affects the intelligence of young people.”

由最后一段的最后两句“But he says the training is still important for cultural reasons. In his words, ‘We teach music because music is important for us.’”

由第四段第三句“Samuel Mehr says researchers have carried out many studies in an effort to learn whether musical training can make children smarter.” 故选A项。

hostess“女主人”; competitor“对手”;provider“提供者”;candidate“候选人”。根据前文“When you are five years old,

  your mother is your everything.(当你五岁的时候,你的妈妈是你的一切。)”

mainly“主要地,大体上”;completely“完全地,彻底地”;gradually“逐步地,渐渐地”; occasionally“偶尔,间或”。

根据空后的“...that would keep her in bed for days, leaving me to care for her and look after myself.”

stick to“坚持,粘住”;escape from“逃脱”;decide on“决定,选定”;get through“通过,熬过”。

根据后文“I felt it was the worst betrayal (背叛).”

ridiculous“可笑的,荒谬的”;urgent“紧急的,紧迫的”;desperate“令人绝望的”;complex“复杂的,合成的”。根据后文的“boxes of noodles”, “lived in our car”等可知,作者和他母亲的生活在当时是多么地令人绝望,故选C。

survive on“靠……

in the long run“从长远来看”;time and again“屡次,常常”;for quite a while“有一阵子”;all at once“突然,同时”。 故选A。

  Dear Mr. Smith,

For the May 4th Youth Day,

there will be an English talent show in our school, so I'm writing to invite you to watch and make comments after it.

The talent show, whose theme is “Innovations on Campus”, will take place in our school gymnasium from 8:30 a.m

to 11:30 a.m. on April 30th. Every class is required to put on one performance in which students can sing songs, dance, act out textbook dramas, tell stories or give speeches. I'm sure we will have a good time enjoying performances and will be inspired to learn English better.

I'd appreciate it if you could come. I'm looking forward to your early reply. If you have any questions, please contact me at 123456789.

  With best wishes.
