They survive in some of the coldest environments in the world—but even penguins appreciate a warm woolly sweater once in a while.

The mini knitted garments have helped save hundreds of flightless birds caught in oil spills(石油泄漏),providing protection from the elements and stopping them from absorbing poisonous pollution.

Knits for Nature,a program run by The Penguin Foundation, which conserves the little penguin population of Phillip Island,140 km south-east of Melbourne, has created up to 300 different designs over the years—and it`s all thanks to the talented volunteers.

People love to help the penguins because they’re so cute and small and they wag up the beach and they’re so strong-minded.But they live in a pretty tough sort of environment.A thumbnail-sized patch of oil can kill little penguins, the smallest of the species, measuring just 13 inches(33cm) and weighing 2.2lbs(1 kg).The oil separates and mats their feathers, breaking natural waterproofing and heating functions.

A staff member Ms Blom read an article in an English women’s magazine about knitting for guillemot birds and decided to adapt the designs.Up to now she knitted between 200 and 300 penguin sweaters over the years, including ones in the colors of every Australian Rules football team in the country.

There’s an awful lot of ladies out there who used to knit for their children and grandchildren. These ladies have spare wool and idle hands, and they have contributed a great deal.

The Penguin Foundation recently staged a competition for the most creative sweater, which received an enthusiastic response.

The Penguin Foundation rescues approximately 20 birds a year. They even have a stockpile of sweaters in case of emergency—such as the large oil spill near Phillip Island in 2001.In that instance,453 Little Penguins were affected,96 percent of which were saved—most thanks to the sweaters.

1.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A.Even penguins are born with a heart for beauty

B.Woolly sweaters help save penguins caught in oil spills

C.Measures should be taken to stop oil spills

D.Volunteers are able to create various designs of sweaters

2.People are willing to protect the penguins because.

A.they love the penguins which are in a bad environment

B.the colors of every Australian football team are appealing to them

C.their children and grandchildren like to play with penguins

D.they are highly motivated to improve their hand-knitting skills

3.The underlined word “staged” in the second paragraph from bottom means.

  A.appointed B.dressed

  C.held D.harvested

4.From the last paragraph we can conclude that.

A.453 Little Penguins were saved in 2001

B.large oil spills always occur near Phillip Island

C.the Penguin Foundation is expert in making a fortune

D.the storage of sweaters really does count in an emergency

4.D 推理判断题。根据文章最后两句“...96 percent of which were saved—most thanks to the sweaters.”可知,在2001年菲利普岛附近的大规模石油泄露事件中,储备的毛衣使得96%的企鹅获救,可见储备毛衣对于应对紧急情况确实非常重要。
