The interview had been going on for about 20 minutes and everything seems to be going well. Then, suddenly, the interviewer asks an unexpected question,“Which is more important, law or Dove?”

Job applicants in the West increasingly find themselves asked strange questions like this. And the signs are that this is beginning to happen in China.

Employers want people skilled, enthusiastic and devoted. So these are the qualities that any reasonably intelligent job applicants will try to show no matter what his or her actual feelings are.In response, employers are increasingly using questions which try and show the applicant’s true personality.

The question in the first paragraph comes from a test called the Keirsey Personality Sorter. It is an attempt to discover how people solve problems, rather than what they know. This is often called an aptitude test (能力倾向测验).

According to Mark Baldwin many job applicants in China are finding this type of questions difficult. When a Chinese person fills out an aptitude test he or she will think there is a right answer and they may fail because they try to guess what the examiner wants to see.

This is sometimes called the prisoner’s dilemma.Applicants are trying to act cleverly in their own interest. But they fail because they don’t understand what the interviewer is looking for.Remember that in an aptitude test, the correct answer is always the honest answer.

After a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.

One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a plough and a wall. When Mrs. Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.

The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock.

1.The reason for Robert’s attempts to kill himself was that _________.

  A. a terrible traffic accident happened to him

  B. he had to live in a dark and silent world

  C. he was struck by the lightning once more

  D. nobody in the world cared about him

2.What was Robert doing when he was struck by the lightning?

  A. Sheltering from the rain under a tree.

  B. Driving a car.

  C. Taking a walk with a stick.

  D. Lying on the ground.

3.We can infer from the text that ________.

  A. there was no accurate explanation for Robert’s recovery

  B. many doctors came because Robert was badly injured

  C. Robert’s wife sent for doctors immediately after the shock

  D. a sudden injury in the head led to Robert’s recovery

4.What’s the best title of the whole passage?

  A. A Terrible Electrical Accident

  B. Robert Edwards and His Wife

  C. What a Sudden Shock

  D. An Unforgettable Experience

  根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Two biggest wealth in life: your talent and your time. Talent increases and time decreases. Our life, in a way, is trading time with talents. Wasting time means our time decreases while our talents do not increase.

  36

Get to know how you use your usual time and make improvements

Take a week and write down what you do every 30 minutes every day and make it into categories. After a week’s recording, you’ll see which part consumes most of the time.

  37

And you could come up with a revised timetable for your next week.

Use fragment (碎片) times and “dead times”

By time recording, you’ll be amazed how much time you’ve wasted in waiting for the bus, queuing, walking, etc. You could really put that time to better use,

  38

. Use your fragment times for insignificant matters so that you could have more time for things that really matter.

  39

There’re always things to be done every day, and the thing we could do is to identify whether it’s urgent or important. The things you need to do for the day rest only on the urgent as well as important things. Don’t become slaves to urgent but unimportant things.

  Use the 20%-80% principle

At the most efficient time, 20% of time could generate 80% of efficiency and on the contrary, at the least efficient time, 80% of the time could only generate 20% of efficiency. We should be doing important works at the most efficient time. That time period differs from person to person,

  40

. Yet generally speaking, it’s round 10 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon.

After being familiar with those tips, the next thing would be to implement and hold on to it. Do the right thing at the right time, and we shall make our time to its fullest!

  A. Finish as many tasks as possible

  B. Pick three things you must finish today

  C. That is why we shall save every second and make it count.

  D. depending on your mentality and physical condition

  E. like memorizing English words or making necessary phone calls

  F. Make an analysis about the ways you could improve your efficiency.

  G. but everyone has a peak effect time
