Part A: Reading Aloud
Malls are popular places for Americans to go. Some people spend so much time at malls that they are called “mall rats”. People like malls for many reasons. They feel safe because malls have guards. Parking is usually free, and the weather inside is always fine. Now, malls are like town centers where people come to do many things. They shop, and of course, they also eat food from all over the world. In some malls, people can see a doctor and even go to the church. So people can live in their favorite shopping center.
Part B:Role Play
M: Good morning. It’s a fine day, isn’t it?
W: Yeah, it’s really sunny.
M: It seems you’re not a native. Are you American?
W: No, I’m English. What about you?
M: I’m German. You work here, don’t you?
W: No, I’m on a holiday. What are you doing, then?
M: I just go to France... ur...
W: On holiday?
M: No, I am going to take some photos for a travel magazine.
W: That’s very interesting. Can you take some pictures for me?
M: Sure, with pleasure. It would be a pity not to take some pictures in France.
W: Thank you. Let’s go to the Great Square.
M: Are you ready? OK, good ... Please make a pose ... Perfect!
W: By the way, do you know if there’s a restaurant nearby?
M: Yes. Look at the red building over there. It’s a good Chinese restaurant.
W: Mmm, I’ll treat you to a meal in exchange.
M: Really? I can’t believe my ears.
Part C: Story Retelling
The clock had clicked to sleep at least an hour ago. However, the couple’s thoughts had not. The air was filled with tension and the room was wet through in dark. In the early evening, within the house the man had just had a quarrel with his wife, seriously insulting each other. He couldn’t even remember what they were arguing about in the first place. Money, envy, maybe even the boring life had led to the quarrel. And they laid in the bed silently, knowing but not admitting the other’s not falling asleep.
Guilt was sitting between them, waiting for them to recognize, while pride was standing behind them, preventing them from saying sorry. The man was angry with them both and was fighting with them, but every time he thought he had won and he could open his mouth, sound couldn’t quite make its way out.
Soon the clock beside the bed clicked twelve-thirty, but his mouth somehow couldn’t say out “I’m sorry.” He continued to keep silent painfully when the seconds and minutes went by. No words fell from their lips, and silence spread from between them, across the bed and to the floor, to the corners of their room and then up the walls.
It was one am, but sleep was nowhere to be found. Guilt, pride, and silence all felt tired and had stopped fighting. Now the couple sat around looking to each other for direction, not really knowing what to do. Soon he noticed that her hand had been moved towards his own. As her fingers touched his, a quiet apology came out, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry for blaming you. I’m sorry for not being a better person for you.”
