Passage 1

[2016·衡水二中预测]In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics (策略).

One tactic involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food (垃圾食品) later in their trip. In department stores, the women's shoe section is generally next to the women's cosmetics (化妆品) section: while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later.

Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers' senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wines went up.

When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $10 million houses.

1.Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section?

  A.To save customers time.

B.To show they are high quality foods.

  C.To help sell junk food.

D.To sell them at discount prices.

2.According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy?

A.Opening the store early in the morning.

B.Displaying British wines next to French ones.

  C.Inviting customers to play music.

D.Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread.

3.What is the California builder's story intended to prove?

A.The house structure is a key factor customers consider.

B.The more costly the house is, the better it sells.

C.An ocean view is much to the customers' taste.

D.A good first impression increases sales.

★4.What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To explain how businesses turn people into their customers.

B.To introduce how businesses have grown from the past.

C.To report researches off customer behavior.

  D.To show dishonest business practices.

  Passage 2

[2016·枣强中学月考]Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with more money. Strange as it may seem, if you're unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desiresnot that you cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes.

Real riches consist of welldeveloped and hearty capacities (能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped (淹没) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They_live_in_too_big__a_house_with_too_ many_rooms,_yet_their_house_of_life_is_a_hut.

Your house of life ought to be a mansion (豪宅), a royal palace. Every new taste, every additional interest, every fresh enthusiasm adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have.

Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find plenty of ham and eggs when you're hungry.

Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go toward making you a rich person, for a rich person is not someone who has a library but who likes a library.

Music like Mozart's and Bach's shouldn't be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you've brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills.

Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against the bad days, if you could, and did, play a bit.

Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding.

1.The author intends to tell us that________.

A.true happiness lies in achieving wealth by fair means

B.big houses are people's most valued possessions

C.big houses can in a sense bring richness of life

D.true happiness comes from spiritual riches

2.The underlined sentence in the second paragraph probably implies that________.

A.however materially rich, they never seem to be satisfied

B.however materially rich, they remain spiritually poor

C.though their house is big, they prefer a simple life

D.though their house is big, it seems to be a cage

3.It can be learned from the passage that________.

  A.more money brings more happiness

B.art is needed to make your house beautiful

C.literature can enrich your spiritual life

D.sports contribute mainly to your physical fitness

★4.What would be the best title for the passage?

  A.House of Life

  B.Secret of Wealth

  C.Rest and Refreshment

  D.Interest and Enthusiasm

[长难句分析]'Strange as it may seem, if you're unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desires—not that you cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes.

Bobbi Kristina Brown's family has been gathered around

her since she was hospitalized on Saturday after being found

unconscious in the bathtub of her suburban Atlanta townhome.

“Whitney Houston's only child is now at Emory University Hospital and is still fighting for her life,”a family statement said on Monday.

Nothing has changed despite reports that are popping up and painting a more serious picture.

Fox News reported Wednesday that the situation is horrific.“It's now a matter of when the family wants to let go and accept that she's pretty much not going to make it,”a source told FOX411. “They've left it up to the family as to

how long they want to keep her alive.”

People magazine is also reporting that a doctor told

Brown's family on Wednesday that nothing more could be done.“Everyone is coming to the hospital to say goodbye,”said a family member.

And Daily Mail says Brown has been taken off life

  support system.

But Bobby Brown issued a statement late on Thursday

  denying these reports.

“If we issued a statement every time the media published

a false report regarding this matter, that's all we would be

doing 24 hours a day. This is false, just as the vast majority of

the other reporting that is currently taking place,”he said, according to The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

A source close to the family tells USA Today that it's wrong to say the family is gathering to say goodbye, because the family has been there since the beginning, so nothing is any different today for them.

Also, Brown is not brain dead, as it has been reported.

And, as for other stories saying that the Houston family is feuding with Bobbi Kristina's dad, Bobby Brown, those aren't true either.“They are not fighting,”says our source.

C.he is getting along well with the Houston family

D.most journalists are getting the wrong end of the stick

★3.Which can be the best title of the passage?

  A.An Accident in the Bathtub

B.Kristina, We're Still Praying and Waiting on a Miracle

C.False Reports from Different News Media

  D.Bobbi Kristina's Final Days

根据第二段的“is still fighting for her life”和第七段的“denying these reports”并结合全文整体内容可推知,媒体的报道并不真实,Bobbi一直在和病魔作斗争。

[2016·冀州中学周测]My grandmother was from a town in Michigan. Summer after summer, I enjoyed staying with my grandparents as a young child. I was from the city and loved the small town they lived in. People knew everyone, their kids, their pets and their ancestors. The bond with them continued to grow as they got older. Grandma was always using her hands for something exciting. She would make little sandwiches and we'd have tea parties. She'd make beautiful quilts for each one. I remember the small thimble (顶针) she would use while doing her needle work.

A few years ago, when Grandma left this earth, I bid farewell to a loving grandmother. How quickly our lives can change. We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier, on her 91st birthday.

I missed her very much. On one particular birthday, when I was feeling a little low, something happened to make me feel like she was sharing that special day with me. I was arranging some colorful pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow. It was small and hard. I moved the object to a seam (接缝) that I carefully opened, and to my delight out came a tiny silver thimble! How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her. Not realizing it had fallen off her finger, I pictured her sewing it in that little pillow that I just happened to place on my bedspread that day.

I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I've collected over the years, where I could continue to see the gift God chose to reveal to me. What a precious memory of a very special lady who somehow, I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble inside my pillow.

I made some tea, using my best china, as Grandma always did, and enjoyed my tea and Grandma's thimble. What a wonderful birthday that was!

A recent study, while showing a generally positive attitude toward science, also suggests a widespread worry that it may be “running out of control”. This idea is dangerous.

Science can be a force for evil as well as for good. Its applications can be channeled either way, depending on our decisions. The decisions we make, personally or collectively, will determine the outcomes of science. But here is a real danger. Science is advancing so fast and is so strongly influenced by businesses that we are likely to believe whatever decisions we come to will make little difference. And, rather than fighting for the best possible policies, we may step back and do nothing.

Some people go even further. They say that despite the moral and legal objections, whatever is scientifically possible will be done—somewhere, sometime. They believe that science will get out of control in the end. This belief is dangerous too, because it fuels a sense of hopelessness and discourages them from making efforts to build a safer world.

In our interconnected world, the lack of agreement in and out of the world of science can lead to the failure to control the use of science. Without a common understanding, the challenges of

“controlling” science in this century will be really tough. Take human cloning for example. Despite the general agreement among scientists on its possible huge impact (影响) on traditional moral values, some countries still go ahead with the research and development of its related techniques. The outcomes are hard to predict.

Therefore, discussions on how science is applied should be extended far beyond scientific societies. Only through the united efforts of people with hope, can we be fully safe against the misuse of science and can science best serve mankind in the future.

A.The development of science will hopelessly slow down.

B.Businesses will have even greater influence on science.

C.The public will lose faith in bringing about a bright future.

D.People will work more actively to put science under control.

根据第三段中的“This belief is dangerous too, because it fuels a sense of hopelessness and discourages them from making efforts to build a safer would.”

3.The discussion should reach beyond scientific societies because ________.

A.scientists have failed to predict the outcomes

B.the ties between different areas need strengthening

C.united efforts are necessary for the development of science

D.people need to work together to prevent the bad use of science

[2016·枣强中学周测]Suppose you become a leader in an organization. It's very likely that you'll want to have volunteers to help with the organization's activities. To do so,it should help to understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work.

Let's begin with the question of why people volunteer. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate. To select volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract.

People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can shift people's wish of participation from an internal factor (e.g.,“I volunteer because it's important to me”) to an external factor (e.g.,“I volunteer because I'm required to do so”). When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must.

Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to remain in their positions over time? To answer this question, researchers have conducted followup studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice. The researchers note that attention should be given to “training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience”.

Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work. Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering in Hospital is an important part of who I am.” Consistent with the researchers' expectations, they found a positive correlation (正相关) between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results, once again, lead to concrete advice:“Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity....Items like Tshirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity”.

[2016·冀州中学预测]When I began planning to move to Auckland to study, my mother was a little worried about the uncertainty of living in a place that was so different from India, where we lived. She worried particularly about the lack of jobs, the cultural differences and the chance that I would face racism.

Despite these worries, I came to New Zealand in July 2009. I have found the place and people very nice and supportive. Soon after I arrived, I realized the importance of getting a job to supply my living expenses.

Determined to do this on my own, I spent a whole day going from door to door asking for a job. However, I received little or no response. This became my routine every day after college for a few weeks.

One afternoon, I walked into a building to ask if there were any job opportunities. People there were very surprised, and advised me not to continue my job search in that manner. As I was about to leave, a clerk in the building, who had been listening to what the others had said, approached me and

asked if I would wait outside. Fifteen minutes later, he

returned. He asked me what my plans were and encouraged me to stay confident. He then offered to take me to the Royal Oak area to search for a job.

I was a little surprised, but had a good feeling about him, so I went along. Along the way, I realized that I had run out of copies of my resume (简历). The man stopped at his business partner's office to make me 15 extra copies. He also gave me tips on dressing and speaking, and added that I should give him a call if I ever needed anything. I handed out my resumes and went home feeling very satisfied. The following day, I received a call from a store in Royal Oak offering me a job.

It seems that the world always gives back to you when you need it. And this time, it was a complete stranger who turned out to be a real blessing.

Sure, it's good to get along with your teacher because it

makes that time you spend in the classroom more pleasant.

And yes, it's good to get along with your teacher because, in

general, it's smart to learn how to relate to the different types

of people you'll meet throughout your life.

But really, there's one superimportant reason why you

should get along with your teacher. Kids who get along with

their teachers not only learn more, but also they're more

comfortable asking questions and getting extra help. This

makes it easier to understand new material and do your best on

tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher,

he or she can be someone to turn to with problems, such as

learning or school issues and bullying.

As a kid in elementary or middle school, you're at a

wonderful stage in your life. You're able to take in lots of new

and exciting information. Apart from that, you're able to think

about all this information in new ways. Your teacher knows

  that,

  and in most cases,

he or she is thrilled to be the person

who's giving you all that material and helping you put it

together. Remember teachers are people, too, and they feel

great if you're open to what they're teaching you. That's why

they wanted to be teachers in the first place!

Some kids may be able to learn in any situation, whether

they like the teacher or not. But most kids are sensitive to the

way they get along with the teacher, and if things aren't going

well, they won't learn as well and won't enjoy being in class.
