Holidays are really important. Many of us will have childhood memories of summer holidays where we were taken away from home to experience new environments and learn in different ways.

But holidays are expensive and, for those on low wages or living on benefits, they are often unobtainable. Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional costs that are difficult for many families to meet.

For working parents, the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childcare. When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks, there is a need to spread this across the year. Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday. For some ’ this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult.

The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced staff committed to giving our children a caring and inspiring learning environment. The number of children receiving free school meals is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start to the day. Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educational support. Schools also have an important role in sofeguaiding children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed.

While teachers are holidaying in the UK, many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learning.

In setting out its plans for a five-term year, Nottingham City Council (委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down lo four and a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, each followed by a two-week break. We believe this will give real “down time" for school staff and pupils alike but will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning.

We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, this must be weighed against the benefits for city children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.

  71. The passage is probably written by

  .

  A. an experienced teacher B. a working parent

  C. an inspired student D. a city council member

  72. The underlined word "they" in the second paragraph refers to "

  ’.

  A. environments B. holidays C. wages D. benefits

  73. It is suggested in the passage that the summer break be reduced to .

  .A. 2 weeks B. 4.5 weeks C. 5 weeks D. 6 weeks

  74. The plans for a shorter summer holiday will help students_____ .

  A. obtain the cheapest holidays without additional costs

  B. get a chance to spend six weeks a term with teachers in school

  C. benefit more from the caring and inspiring learning environment

  D. have more school days to receive free school meals

  75. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

  A. working parents can enjoy a five-week break to care for their children

  B. the suggested plans for a five-term school year can hardly be carried out

  C. the long summer holiday gives teachers and students real "down time"

  D. some school staff will say “ No" to the plans for a shorter summer holiday

③Thousands of people living in the Chinese capital will celebrate the start of the Chinese New Year by heading for the ski resorts(滑雪场).Never mind that Beijing’s dry weather seldom produces now. It is cold enough in winter for snow-making machines to make a covering for the hills north to the capital. And the rapid growth of a pleasure-seeking middle class has formed the basis for this New craze(热潮).

Since Beijing’s first ski resort was opened ten years ago, the sport has enjoyed an astonishing increase. There are now more than a dozen resorts. Clothes markets in the city have added bright colored ski suits to their winter collections. Mr.Wei, a manager of a newly-opened ski resort in Beijing, sees the growth of an industry that could soon lead Chinese to head for the ski resorts of Europe. In recent years ski resorts offering natural snow have opened in China. But many are in faraway areas of the country and can’t really match the equipment and services of some ski resorts in Europe.

Beijing’s skiing craze is partly a result of the recent increase in private cars. This has led to the growth of a leisure industry in the capital’s suburbs, which until the late-1990s were unreachable to ordinary people. According to Mr. Wei, About 40% of the visitors to his resort some in their own cars. The rest are bused in by schools, businesses or government offices.

The problem is making money. Starting ski resort requires quite a lot of money: hiring land from the local government, preparing the hills, buying snow machines ,making sure there are enough water and electricity to run them, and buying ski equipment for hiring out to customers. The ski resort where Mr.Wei works cost nearly $4m to set up. And, as so often in China when someone comes up with a good idea, many others rush in and price wars break out. Beijing now offers some of the cheapest ski training classes in the world, though with most people rather new to the sport, expecting a few more doing the same job.

High school students are some of the busiest people in the world. To get the most from all you do, you must be in control of your time. Otherwise decisions that effect how well you play the game, what position you play and when you get to play will be decided for you. Your success in high school depends on your use of time. Here are some important things to remember.

•Begin each term by filling in a master plan. First fill in things you must do (classes, work, practice, etc. that you can’t change). Then find the most effective use for these times.

•Set a regular time and place for study. This will save you time in the long run. If you have a study hall in your school, use it!

•Use daylight hours to study whenever possible. For most people for every hour of study done in daylight hours, it will take them one and a half hours to do the same task at night.

•Take breaks. Don’t plan marathon study time. Have a short rest before you study again.

•⑤ By using flash cards or summary sheets, you can use odd times to study — while you’re waiting for class to start or for a friend to pick you up.

•If possible, plan study time with a partner. Choose your partner wisely however. Make sure you study, not socialize.

•Do the most difficult tasks for times when you are active. (Take math for example: when you’re energetic, it will become easier to solve; when you’re tired, it will be impossible!)

•Make a daily checklist (清单). Do the most important tasks first. . According to the passage, your success in high school chiefly lies in ________.   A. making full use of your time    B. your hard work C. your brainpower         D. how well you play the game 2. We should use daylight hours to study whenever possible because ________.   A. school study halls are open to students only in the daytime   B. most people can spare more time to study in the daytime   C. it’s more difficult to study effectively at night   D. we have more important things to do than study at night 3. On how to use our time, we should follow the following suggestions EXCEPT ________.   A. working out a complete plan for the whole term   B. keeping a good balance between study and rest   C. putting the most important tasks first D. trying to study alone instead of working with others 4. The word underlined “odd” in Paragraph 6 probably means “______”. A. strange     B. irregular    C. busy     D. divided

  5. The passage is mainly written for _______.

  A. students

  B. teachers

  C. parents

  D. readers

The New Year is a time for celebration for almost for everyone of

the world. In Britain, people go to pubs and nightclubs to dance the old away, and to welcome in the new one at midnight.

In recent years, street parties have become more popular. Thousands of people gather in squares, main streets or on the river banks to listen to bands playing and to see fireworks displays.

For people who stay at home, most are attracted by the special, live New Year shows on TV. They are waiting for the countdown, along with the presenters, from 10 to 1 as the last second of the old year away and the bells of the New Year are rung.

Scotland, people visit their neighbors and drink, dance on New Year' s Eve. If you' re invited to a Scottish home that night, it’s important to know what to bring with you: a lump of coal, some shortbread and some whisky.

The coal shows warmth, so you're wishing the people you visit will have enough

heat in the coming year. The shortbread represents food, so you're hoping that the people will have enough to eat in the new year. Some Scots call whisky “the water of life", so when you hand over your bottle to your hosts, it means you want them to have enough to drink over the next 12 months.

And there' s one more key task you still have to perform if you can. ⑥The first person to knock on a neighbor' s door is supposed to be a tall, dark, and handsome man who will bring good luck to the household. But what if that's not you? Well, don' t ring the bell just yet. Wait a while and the right person is sure to turn up soon!

  1. What is the best title for this passage?

  A. Seeing the old year off in Britain.

  B. Celebrations of a Scottish New Year.

  C. Visiting Scottish homes on New Year

  D. Sending good luck in the New Year.

2.Why do visitors take things to a Scottish New Year' s Eve?

  A. To share good food and warmth.

  B. To help those poor families.

  C. To send best wishes to the families.

  D. To show richness and generosity.

For most people for every hour of study done in daylight hours, it will take them one and a half hours to do the same task at night可知,晚上学习的效率比较低,故答案为C。 . D。 If possible, plan study time with a partner相违背。 . B。由下文的while you’re waiting for class to start or for a friend to pick you up可知这些时间都是临时的、零散的时间,相对. B。

  3. B。根据文章叙述的事实,这儿的the right person肯定是那个适合开门的人,也就是上文说的a tall, dark, handsome man who will bring good luck to the household。

·黄金表达①Imagine,one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.②It’ll be a win-win project.
