第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项A
I was doing some Christmas shopping in a toy store and decided to look at Barbie dolls for my nieces. A nicely dressed little girl was excitedly looking through the Barbie dolls as well. As she was looking, a little boy came to the Pokemon toys. He was dressed neatly, but his clothes were obviously old. He was with his father as well, and kept picking up the Pokemon video toys. Each time he picked one up and looked at his father, his father shook his head and said, “No.”
The little girl had chosen her Barbie. However, she stopped and was watching them. Rather dejectedly, the boy had to give up the Pokemon toys and choose something else. The little girl put her Barbie back on the shelf, and ran over to the Pokemon toys. She excitedly picked up one and raced towards the checkout. I picked up my purchases and got in line behind them. Then, much to the little girl’s delight, the little boy and his father got in line behind me. After the toy was paid for and bagged, the little girl handed it back to the cashier and whispered something in her ear. The casher smiled and put the package under the counter.
I paid for my purchases and was rearranging things when the little boy came up to the cashier. The cashier checked his purchases and said, “Congratulations, you are my hundredth customer today, and you win a prize!” With that, she handed the little boy the Pokemon toys, and he could only stare in surprise. It was exactly what he had wanted!
The little girl and her father had been standing at the doorway during all of this. Then they walked out. As I walked back to my car, I heard the father ask his daughter why she had done that. I’ll never forget what she said to him. “Daddy, didn’t Grandparents want me to buy something that would make me happy?” He said, “Of course they did, honey.” To which the little girl replied, “Well, I just did!”
I feel very shocked to have witnessed the true spirit of Christmas in that toy store, in the form of a little girl who understands more about the meaning of this festival than most adults I know.
21. The underlined word “dejectedly” in Paragraph 2 probably means____.
A. delightedly
B. excitedly
C. disappointedly
D. unexpectedly
22. How did the little boy get the Pokemon toys?
A. His father bought him the Pokemon toys happily
B. The little girl bought the Poknemon toys for him
C. The cashier felt sympathy and gave him the Poknemon toys
D. He was the 100th customer and won the Poknemon toys
23. What did the little girl mean when saying “Daddy, didn’t Grandparents want me to buy something that would make me happy?”
A. Making the little boy happy made her happy
B. Her Grandparents wanted her to be happy
C. The Poknemon toys made her happy
D. Her Grandparents hoped that she could help others.
24. What can we learn from the text?
A. The story happened in a shop just after Christmas.
B. The little girl preferred the Poknemon toys to Barbie
C. The boy actually had enough money to buy the Pokemon toys
D. The author was deeply moved by the behavior of the little girl
B
Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, “But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you’re dead.” Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear is safety belt—a mistake 75% of the US population make every day. The big question is why.
There have been many myths(错误结论) about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago. The following are three of the most common.
Myths Truths
1. It’s best to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident. Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear” is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are that you’ll have traveled through a wind shield(挡风玻璃) or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in cases where people are “thrown clear".
2. Safety belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water. Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious(昏迷) due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.
3. Safety belts aren’t needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour. When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.
25. Why did Elizabeth say to her father, “But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you’re dead”?
A. He was driving at great speed.
B. He was running across the street.
C. He didn’t have his safety belt on.
D. He didn’t take his medicine on time.
26. Why is it dangerous to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident?
A. You may get aught in the car door
B. You may be knocked down by other cars
C. You may find it impossible to get away from the seat
D. You may get seriously hurt being thrown out of the car
27. What is the advice given in the text?
A. Never drive faster than 30 miles an hour
B. Try your best to save yourself in a car accident
C. Never forget to wear the safety belt while driving
D. Drive slowly while you’re not wearing a safety belt
C
One Sunday, a few of us decided to take advantage of the first sunny day we’d had for ages to take a trip down to the coast to visit the penguins again. Last time I went down there was a couple of months ago and it was a dull cold day. Sunday couldn't have been more different - clear skies and sunshine made it feel like summer, although it was
still 250°C.
Six of us drove to the coast. It was the first time we'd been off the base on our own without our field assistant, so it had a slightly different feeling - more like a few friends going to the seaside than an Antarctic field trip! When we reached Windy Creek, we luckily caught sight of quite a few small flying seabirds, which are seldom seen there.
Once on the sea ice we found that some of the more curious penguins had wandered over from the main group to come and check us out. We'd been told that then they were nursing their chicks and they would be more careful and nervous than last time, but that didn't seem to be the case. We walked across to the main group which were stretched for a couple of miles along the coast. We sat down for some sandwiches and soon found ourselves surrounded by many curious observers. Without any attackers on land, they were very brave and came within a meter of us to pose for photos.
Before heading back, we spent a few hours on the sea ice watching the penguins and their chicks, which had grown dramatically since our last visit.
It was such a nice day.
28. When did the trip most probably happen?
A. On a dull Sunday.
B. On a warm Sunday.
C. On a summer Sunday.
D. On a winter Sunday.
29. What can we infer from Paragraph 2 about the six people?
A. They felt a little excited traveling without assistant
B. They got bored with following their field assistant
C. They felt a little nervous when they travelled alone
D. They were left all by themselves on the Antarctic base
30. What does the writer mean by saying "but that didn't seem to be the case"?
A. They were told a lie.
B. A wrong decision was made.
C. The truth was the opposite.
D. They didn't believe what they were told.
31. What did the six people do during the trip?
A. They fed the penguins some sandwiches
B. They took some procures of the penguins
C. They aided the chicks of the penguins
D. They kept a distance from the main group
D
All over the world mothers and fathers teach their children manners. Other children may have manners that are not like yours. There are all kinds of manners. Many years ago, children who had good manners were seen and not heard. They kept quite quiet if grown-ups were talking. Today, well-mannered children have more freedom.
Sometimes good manners in one place are bad manners in other places.
Suppose you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia. Some friends ask you to eat with them. What kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud “burp” (打嗝)after you finish eating. Burping would show that you liked your food. In some countries, if you give a loud burp, you are told to say “Excuse me, please.”
In many places, people like to eat together. But in some parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating together. People show good manners by turning their backs on others while they eat. What are manners like in an East African town? The people try not to see you. They are being polite. You may see a friend. He may not see you at all. If you are polite, you will sit down beside him. You will wait until he finishes what he is doing. Then he will talk to you.
Suppose you visit a friend in Arabia. You should walk behind the other tents until you come to his tent. If you pass in front of the other tents, you will be asked into each one. People will ask you to eat with them. And it is bad manners if you say no.
Manners are different all over the world. But it is good to know that all manners begin in the same way. People needed ways to show that they wanted to be friends.
32. Where do people turn their backs to others while they’re eating?
A. In Mongolia
B. In an East African town
C. In Polynesia
D. In Arabia
33. Why do people try not to see you in an East African town?
A. Because they are not your friends
B. Because they think it is good manners
C. Because they don’t want to talk with you
D. Because they are waiting for you to talk with them
34. What should you do in Arabia when visiting a friend?
A. Give a loud burp when you finish eating
B. Turn back to your friend while you’re eating
C. Sit down beside your friend and wait quietly
D. Walk behind the other tents before coming to his
35. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Different Kinds of Manners
B. Some Bad Manners
C. The Importance of Manners
D. Some Good Manners

Dear Jason,
So glad to know you are coming to China on a study tour. In your last email, you expressed your concern about Chinese table manners. Here I have some advice for you.
We don’t use knives and forks as you do, but we use chopsticks, which may be difficult for you. We show our warm welcome to the guests by trying to persuade them to eat more. People take their seats and begin to eat after the senior. We like to take a toast to give best wishes to each other. In a word, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
Looking forward to your coming. (107 words)
