In 1873, Strauss received a letter from a Jewish tailor named Jacob Davis who had invented a process of connecting pockets with copper rivets(铆钉).This made the pants last a long time. Because Davis did not have the money to patent his idea, he offered to share it with Strauss if Strauss would agree to pay for the patent.

I’m glad to receive your letter. I’ve learnt that you are concerned about the smog which frequently strikes some cities and areas of China. Thanks for your concern. I’m also very worried about such terrible weather because it has brought much inconvenience or rather harm to people’s health such as traffic jam, road accidents, bad coughs and even lung cancers and so on.

As is known to all, good environment comes from careful protection. So we should do what we can to protect it. I believe a small step can make a difference. Try to drive less and choose air-friendly products. Only when everyone has the environmental awareness can we have a blue sky.

Looking forward to hearing from you and share your good ideas.

  Yours,

  Li Hua

  Text 1

W: Do you think you could stop whistling? I’m trying to write a paper.

M: Oh, I’m sorry. I thought you were in the next room.

  Text 2

M: Did you hear what the weatherman said just now?

W: Yes. He said the temperature would be slightly above freezing tomorrow.

  Text 3

  M: Can I help you?

W: Have you go David Coperfield by Dickens? I want a copy for my nephew.

M: Oh, sorry! We haven’t got that at the moment, but we could order it for you. Do you know the name of the publisher?

  Text 4

W: I’ve brought lunch. So we can eat in the park.

M: That’s much more fun than eating in the restaurant.

  Text 5

  W: New City Railway Station.

M: Good morning. Could you tell me the time of the last train to London, please?

W: Last train to London? Yes, sir. 8:35, change at Oxford.

  M: Thank you very much.

  Text 6

M: What seems to be the matter?

  W: I just can’t sleep well, doctor.

M: I see. How long have you been like this?

W: Oh, for about two weeks now.

M: Two weeks. Do you have a headache?

  W: Sometimes.

  M: Fever?

  W: No.

M: Are you having any family problems?

W: No, not really. We all get along pretty well.

  M: And how about work?

  W: Well, I’ve been working a lot lately—more than 11 hours a day.

M: Maybe you should take a vacation and just rest for a few days.

W: Well, I can’t right now. We’re in the middle of some important business.

M: Yes, I understand, but you really need to slow down. You’re going to kill yourself if you go on like this.

  Text 7

W: What part of the paper are you reading?

  M: The travel section.

W: Are you thinking about our vacation already?

M: Yes, it’s not so far away. I’ve been looking at these advertisements.

W: Why don’t we go to the same place we went last year?

M: I won’t stay at that hotel again. I have a better idea for this year. Look at this advertisement. This looks like a wonderful vacation to me.

W: “Three weeks”, “Ten exciting ports”, “Use the ship as a hotel”. How much does it cost?

  M: The price isn’t given.

W: It must be expensive if they don’t give the price in the paper. And besides, I’d rather stay in one place.

M: I don’t want to sit on the same beach and eat the same food and look at the same walls every day for three or four weeks.

W: You know the doctor said you shouldn’t try to do too much.

M: He didn’t say that I had to sit in the same chair all day long.

  Text 8

M: Did you hear what Fred did last night?

W: No, not yet. What happened to him?

M: I guess he was a little drunk and he had a fight with his brother. Well, he got so mad that he drove his car straight into the front of a store.

  W: What do you mean?

M: I mean he drove inside. The front of the store was completely destroyed. I actually saw it just now as I walked by. The car is still inside the store next to the milk! There is food all over it. It is in a terrible state.

W: I’m afraid Fred is in trouble. Where is he now?

M: I hear he’s in the police station. It’s lucky no one was hurt.

  Text 9

  M: Can I help you?

W: Yes, I want to fly to Chicago on Wednesday the seventh and return on Friday the ninth. How much are the tickets?

M: Tickets are cheaper if you stay over Saturday night.

W: Thanks, but unfortunately I’ve already arranged some business here that Friday. So I’ll just have to pay the extra cost.

M: What time of day would you prefer? Morning or afternoon?

W: Morning, because I have to be there by early evening. Is there a meal?

M: Yes, they’ll be serving breakfast, and you’ll also see a film.

W: Sounds good. But what’s the total cost?

  M: 850 dollars round trip.

  W: That’s more than I expected!

  Text 10

M: Hello! I’m Harvard Smith. As the editor of The Voice, I’d like to introduce you to our school daily newspaper. We need volunteers to help us keep the student body informed through our newspaper. Experience isn’t absolutely necessary. But we need people with writing and typing skills. Since The Voice comes out five days a week, we need excellent students who know how to plan their time well. Good grades are necessary. We can pay you, depending on your work but don’t expect to get rich. This isn’t something you do for the money. Mostly it’s just for fun. Anyone who is interested in this job should speak to me immediately after this meeting. Be prepared to start right now!

The first issue goes to press tomorrow.
