After an earthquake most survivors can be expected to recover over time, particularly with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, while others will have to contend with the destruction of their homes, medical problems, and injury to family members. Children especially will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their schools.
Children often turn to adults for information, comfort and help. Parents should try to remain calm, answer children’s questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children’s behavior.
Children react differently to an earthquake depending on their ages, developmental levels and former experiences. Some will respond by withdrawing(不与人交往), while others will have angry outbursts(爆发). Parents should remain sensitive to each child’s reactions. Parents should spend time talking to their children, letting them know that it’s OK to ask questions and to share their worries. Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family mealtimes or bedtimes for them. They should answer questions briefly and honestly and be sure to ask their children for their opinions and ideas. Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when you answer the questions again. For young children, parents, after talking about the earthquake, might read a favorite story or have a relaxing family activity to help them calm down. Parents should also tell children they are safe and spend extra time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.

C2 [2016·江西卷]
The light from the campfire brightened the darkness, but it could not prevent the damp cold of Dennis's Swamp (沼泽地) creeping into their bones. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom wished that they had not accepted Jack's dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp.
“So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name? ”
“Are you sure you want to hear it? It's a scary story,” warned Jack.
“Of course!” cried out Tom. “If there were anything to be scared of, you wouldn't have chosen this place!”
“OK, but don't say I didn't warn you,” said Jack, and he began his tale.
“Way back in time, a man called Dennis tried to start a farm here. He built that cottage over there to live in. In those days, the area looked quite different—it was covered with tall trees and the swamp was a crystal-clear river. After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen to advice.”
“‘You are clearing too much land’,
warned one old man.
‘The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you abuse it.’
‘Silly fool’, said Dennis to himself. ‘If I clear more land, I can grow more crops. I'll become wealthier. He's just jealous!’”
“Dennis continued to chop down trees. Small animals that relied on them for food and shelter were destroyed. He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice salt seeping to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants choking all the native plants.?揥hat happened? ?Martin asked. It was growing colder. He trembled, twisting his body closer to the fire.

His body was never found.?揥hat a stitupid story, ” laughed Tom. “Plants can't…” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted(晕倒). The other two boys jumped up with fright, staring at Tom.
由第八段“If I clear more land, I can grow more crops. I'll become wealthier. He's just jealous!”可知他想有更多的土地,种更多的庄稼,变得更富有,还认为老人在嫉妒他。由此可知他不听老人的劝告是因为他想种更多的庄稼。
59. B 考查细节理解。由最后一段倒数第二句“Some green swamp ivy (常春藤) had covered Tom's face.”可知他晕倒的原因是因为他被常春藤吓到了。
60. A 考查推理判断。综观全文可知贪婪的Dennis因为其贪婪,结果失去了一切,故A项“贪多必失”,符合语境。
There are three different kinds of friends in our life. I classify(分类)them according to how well I know them and how well they know me.
The first type of friend is just an acquaintance(熟人). This means that you only know their names. You might not even remember what they look like if you go away for a short vacation. You don’t miss them when they are elsewhere. It is also this type of friend who gives you the most amount of aggravation(恼怒). Since most of the time you are placed in a position where you have to act friendly. You would not normally tell an acquaintance when he or she is doing something that makes you feel angry, such as tapping the fingers on a table or shouting loudly. I call them “pest friends”.
The second kind of friend is a “guest friend”. They are just social partners. You meet them at a certain location and at the end of the meeting you go your separate way and they go theirs. You don’t talk too often with this sort of friend, and you don’t share each other’s secrets.
Lastly, we have “best friends”. This sort of friend is there when you need them. They know you as a person and they are there through thick and thin. Best friends are the ones that you can lean and depend on no matter what happens. If you need a listening ear, they will be the one to lend support.
Friends come in all different shapes and sizes. Every friend has an impact on our life.…
55. What is this passage mainly about?
A. What a true friend is like.
B. Three kinds of friends in our life.

A. can tell him/her about it directly
B. should stay away from him/her
C. should advise him/her to correct his/her behavior
D. may find it hard to tell him/her not to do so
57. Which of the following statements is WRONG about the second type of friend?
A. They are only social partners.
B. You don’t talk very often with them.
C. You don’t share your secrets with them.
D. They are called “pest friends” by the writer.
58. If someone is with you through thick and thin, it means ______.
A. he/she is your pest friend for sure
B. he/she agrees with whatever you say
C. you spend most of your time together
D. he/she is with you even when there are difficulties

Surfing the Internet for fun will make you a better employee, according to an Australian study.
The University of Melbourne study shows that people who use the Internet for their own reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive than those who do not. Study author Brent Coker said, “Surfing the Internet at times helps increase an employee’s attention.”
“People need to relax for a bit to get back their attention,” Coker said on the university’ s website. “Having a short break, such as a quick surfing of the Internet, helps the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total Internet attention for a day’s work, and as a result, increases productivity(生产效率),” he said.
According to the study of 300 workers, 70 percent of people who use the Internet at work surf the Internet for their own reasons during office hours. Among the most popular surfing activities are searching for information about products, reading online news, playing online games and watching videos. “Firms spend a lot of money on software to block their employees from watching videos, using social networking sites or shopping online,” said Coker. “That’s not always a good idea.”
However, Coker said the study looked at people who surfed the Internet in moderation(适度), or were on the Internet for less than 20 percent of their total time in the office. “Those who spend too much time surfing the Internet will have a lower productivity than those without.” he said.

C. workers should have a long break during office hours
D. workers should let their minds rest now and then
61. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as one of the most popular surfing activities?
A. Watching videos.
B. Reading online news.
C. Reading online novels.
D. Playing online games.
62. The underlined word “block” in Paragraph 4 means “______”.
A. stop
B. organize
C. protect
D. separate
63. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Spending too much time surfing the Internet reduces productivity.

China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country.Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle.Millions of them, all black.Cars were rare.Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today.Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道).Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle.Great weather accompanied my great buy.I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly(守秩序的).To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times.I didn't want to get hit.So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful.I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people.Biking made me feel alive.
56.According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A.Because they are traditional and safe.
B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
C.Because they are colorful and available.
D.Because they are fast and environment friendly.
57.The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ________.
A.to ride it for fun
B.to use it for transport
C.to experience local culture
D.to improve his riding skills
58.How did the author feel about his street crossing?
A.It was boring.
B.It was difficult.
C.It was lively.
D.It was wonderful.
59.Which of the following best describes the author's biking experience?
A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.
B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding.
C.The author was praised by the other bikers.
D.The author took great pleasure in biking.
