Scientists are debating how to limit their newly-discovered power to change genetic structure (结构). Scientists already modify the genes of farm animals and agricultural plants to make them more productive or stronger. But now they can also change genes in wild animals and plants. These genes would continue into later generations. For example, it may be possible for scientists to remove from existence the kind of mosquitoes, small flying insects, that carry the Zika virus. They might also be able to permanently remove species of plants and animals that are damaging to other species.

In a report published last week, the U. S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NAS) said it supports continued research on this kind of gene control. But it warned that it is not possible to know what will happen when these changed plants and animals are released into the wild.

Sixteen biologists, ethicists and policymakers are on an NAS committee that is examining the issue. They say that there is value to the new technology. But, they say, there is not enough evidence to support the release of modified organisms from the laboratory into nature.

Many people would support stopping mosquitoes and rats from carrying diseases. But scientists say we must understand the possible scientific, ethical, legal and social results of such action before we decide whether to take it. Gene modification is spread through reproduction.

Changed genes will continue to spread as long as an animal or plant continues to reproduce. They cannot be limited to a farm or kept within a country's borders. Scientists are wondering what may happen if a modified organism mates with another species. They are not yet sure how the modified genes would affect the other species. It is possible that those genes could harm those creatures or even lead to their disappearance from our planet.

  58. What possible advantage does gene control in wild animals and plants have?

  A. Changing the Zika virus permanently.

  B. Getting rid of damaging species forever.

  C. Having the changed genes in their next generations.

  D. Making all the species more productive and stronger.

  59. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

  A. Scientists are certain what exact results gene modification leads to.

  B. Gene modification can benefit some farm animals and agricultural plants.

  C. Scientists won't modify any genes before they make the final decision.

  D. Gene modification will be encouraged in more creatures in the near future.

  60. The article is mainly intended to ______.

  A. appeal against research on gene control

  B. show how to change genetic structure

  C. inform us of power and danger of gene control

  D. give the reason why gene modification is necessary

  C

Elderly women who eat foods higher in potassium(钾)are less likely to have strokes and die than women who eat less potassium-rich foods, according to new research in the American Heart Association. “Previous studies have shown that potassium consumption may lower blood pressure. But whether potassium intake could prevent stroke or death wasn抰 clear,?said Smoller, professor of the department of population health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY.

Researchers studied 90,137 women, aged from 5ay0 to 79 for an average 11 years. They looked at how much potassium the women consumed, as well as if they had strokes, including ischemic strokes (缺血性中风), or died during the study period. Women in the study were stroke-free at the start and their average dietary potassium intake was 2,611 mg/day. Results of this study are based on potassium from food, not supplements.

The researchers found: Women who ate the most potassium were 12 percent less likely to suffer stroke in general and 16 percent less likely to suffer an ischemic stroke than women who ate the least. Women who ate the most potassium were 10 percent less likely to die than those who ate the least. Among women who did not have high blood pressure, those who ate the most potassium had a 27 percent lower ischemic stroke risk and 21 percent reduced risk for all stroke types, compared to women who ate the least potassium in their daily diets. Among women with high blood pressure, those who ate the most potassium had a lower risk of death, but potassium intake did not lower their stroke risk.

?Our findings suggest that women need to eat more potassium-rich foods. You won’t find high potassium in junk food. Some foods rich in potassium include white and sweet potatoes, bananas and white beans.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that women eat at least 4,700 mg of potassium daily. “Only 2.8 percent of women in our study met or went beyond this level. The World Health Organization’s daily potassium recommendation for women is lower, at 3,510 mg or more. Still, only 16.6 percent of women we studied met or went beyond that,” said Smoller.

While increasing potassium intake is probably a good idea for most elderly women, there are some people who have too much potassium in their blood, which can be dangerous to the heart. “People should check with their doctor about how much potassium they should eat,” she said.

The study was observational and included only elderly women. Researchers also did not take sodium (钠) intake into consideration, so the potential importance of a balance between sodium and potassium is not among the findings. Researchers said more studies are needed to determine whether potassium has the same effects on men and younger people.

  61. The benefits of potassium intake to elderly women do not include ______.

  A. preventing strokes

  B. reducing heart attacks

  C. cutting down death risks

  D. lowering blood pressure

  62. Which of the following figure meets the daily potassium intake recommendation of the World Health Organization?

  A. 4,000 mg

  B. 3,500 mg

  C. 3,000 mg

  D. 2,500 mg

  63. What conclusion can be drawn from the research findings?

  A. Increasing potassium is definitely a good idea for all elderly women.

  B. Elderly women with high blood pressure benefit more from potassium.

  C. Potassium intake is more beneficial to those without high blood pressure.

  D. There was not any association between potassium intake and ischemic strokes.

  64. The author’s purpose for writing this passage is to ______.

  A. present a report on a new research

  B. show the importance of a good life style

  C. give information about a chemical element

  D. encourage elderly women to take potassium

  D

Psychology has a new application in the field of medicine. Many doctors, together with their patients, are looking for alternative methods of treatment of physical problems. In large hospitals, modern therapy seems to focus on the physical disease. Patients may feel they are treated like broken machines. Some doctors have recognized this as a problem. They are now using psychological therapy, in which the patient is working with the doctors against the disease with the help of medicine. The patient does not wait for the medicine and treatment to cure him or her, but instead the patient joins in the fight.

The doctor knows that a disease affects a patient's body physically. The body of the patient changes because of the disease. He is not only physically affected, but also has an emotional response to the disease. Because his mind is affected, his attitude and behavior change. The medical treatment might cure the patient's physical problems, but the patient's mind must fight the emotional ones. For example, the studies of one doctor, Carl Simonton, M. D., have shown that a typical cancer patient has predictable attitudes. She typically feels depressed, upset, and angry. Her constant depression makes her acts unfriendly toward her family, friends, doctors, and nurses. Such attitudes and behaviors prevent recovery. Therefore, a doctor's treatment must help the patient change that. Simonton's method emphasizes treatment of the “whole” patient.

The attitude of a cancer patient receiving radiation therapy, an X-ray treatment, can become more positive. The physician who is following Simonton's psychological treatment plan suggests that the patient imagine that he or she can see the tumor in the body. In the mental picture, the patient "sees" a powerful beam of radiation like a million bullets of energy. The patient imagines the beam hitting the tumor cells and causing them to shrink. For another cancer patient, Dr. Simonton asks him to imagine the medicine going from the stomach into the bloodstream and to the cancer cells. The patient imagines that the medicine is like an army fighting the diseased cells and sees the cancer cells gradually dying and his blood carry away the dead cells. Both the medical therapy and the patient's positive attitude fight the disease.

Doctors are not certain why this mental therapy works. However, this use of psychology does help some patients because their attitudes about themselves change. They become more confident because they use the power within their own minds to help stop the disease.

Another application of using the mind to help cure disease is the use of suggestion therapy. At first, the doctor helps the patient to concentrate deeply. The patient thinks only about one thing. He becomes so unaware of other things around him that he is asleep, or rather in a trance(催眠状态). Then the physician makes “a suggestion” to the patient about the medical problem. The patient's mind responds to the suggestion even after the patient is no longer in the trance. In this way, the patient uses his mind to help his body respond to treatment.

Doctors have learned that this use of psychology is helpful for both adults and children. For example, physicians have used suggestion to help adults deal with the strong pain of some disease. Furthermore, sometimes the adult patient worries about her illness so much that the anxiety keeps her from getting well. The right suggestions may help the patient to stop being anxious. Such treatment may help the patient with a chronic(慢性的)diseases. Asthma (哮喘) is an example of a chronic disorder. Asthma is a disease that causes the patient to have difficulty in breathing. The patient starts to cough and sometimes has to fight to get the air that he or she needs. Psychology can help relieve the symptoms of this disorder. After suggestion therapy, the asthma patient breathes more easily.

Physicians have learned that the psychological method is very useful in treating children. Children respond quickly to the treatment because they are fascinated by it. For example, Dr. Basil R. Collison has worked with 121 asthmatic children in Sydney, Australia, and had good results. Twenty-five of the children had excellent results. They were able to breathe more easily, and they did not need medication. Another forty-three were also helped. The symptoms of the asthma occurred less frequently, and when they did, they were not as strong. Most of the children also felt better about themselves. Doctors have also used suggestion to change habits like nail-biting, thumb-sucking, and sleep-related problems.

Many professional medical groups have accepted the medical use of psychology and that psychology has important applications in medicine.

  65. What does the passage mainly discuss?

  A. How suggestion therapy benefits adults and children.

  B. How modern therapy focuses on the disease.

  C. Responses from the medical world.

  D. How to use the mind against disease.

  66. How does psychological therapy work?

  A. The patient waits for the medicine and treatment to cure him.

  B. The doctor uses medical treatment to cure the patient's problems.

  C. The doctor, the medicine, and the patient work together to fight disease.

  D. The patient uses his mind to cure himself.

  67. What can we learn from the studies of Carl Simonton, M. D.?

  A. The medical treatment can cure the patient's mental disease.

  B. The treatment of a patient by treating the body and the mind is necessary.

  C. The mental treatment is more important than medical treatment.

  D. Few patients have emotional response to the disease.

  68. The use of psychological therapy is helpful to some patients in that

  .

  A. the medical effect is better with psychological therapy than without it

  B. the patients can see a powerful beam of radiation hitting their tumor cells

  C. the patients' attitudes towards themselves have changed

  D. the patients are easy to accept the methods the doctors use to treat them

  69. It can be learned from the passage that suggestion therapy cannot be used to

  .

  A. help adults deal with the strong pain of some diseases

  B. help the patients with chronic diseases

  C. help change some bad habits

  D. help cure patients of insomnia(失眠症)

  70. According to the passage, which of the following remains unknown so far?

  A. The value of mental therapy.

  B. The effectiveness of suggestion therapy.

  C. The working principle of suggestion therapy.

  D. The importance of psychology in medical treatment.

  第Ⅱ卷 (两部分 共35分)

  第四部分 任务型阅读 (共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

  注意:每个空格只填1个单词。请将答案写在答题卡上相应题号的横线上。

In a study just published in the journal Intelligence, using search terms such as “stupid thing to do”, Balazs Aczel and his colleagues compiled a collection of stories describing stupid mistakes from sources such as The Huffington Post and TMZ. The researchers then had a sample of university students rate each story on the responsibility of the people involved, the influence of the situation, the seriousness of the consequences, and other factors.

Analyses of the subjects’ ratings revealed three varieties of stupid mistakes. The first is when a person’s confidence goes beyond their skill, as when a Pittsburgh man robbed two banks in broad daylight without wearing a disguise, believing that lemon juice he had rubbed on his face would make him invisible to security cameras.

The confidence-skill disconnection has been named the Dunning-Kruger effect, after a study by social psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger. Dunning and Kruger had Cornell undergraduates perform tests of humor, logic, and grammar, and then rate how well they think they performed compared to other subjects in the study. The worst performing subjects, whose scores put them in the 12th percentile, estimated that they had performed in the 62nd percentile. Summarizing the findings, Dunning noted, “Poor performers—and we are all poor performers at some things—fail to see the flaws in their thinking or the answers they lack.” When we think we are at our best is sometimes when we are at our objective worst.

As any number of political scandals illustrate, the second type of stupid mistake involves impulsive acts—when we seem unable to keep our behavior in check. In the scandal that became known as Weinergate, former U.S. representative Anthony Weiner sent blue texts and pictures of himself to women he met on Facebook. (After resigning, Weiner continued his cyber-dalliances, and then fell prey to the Dunning-Kruger effect when he overestimated his support in the 2016 New York City mayoral primary; he received 5% of the vote.)

The final variety of stupid mistake involves failing to concentrate—Homer Simpsonesque D’oh moments. As arguably the best example from American sports history, in the 1929 Rose Bowl, University of California star Roy Riegels recovered a fumble(失误球) and returned it 65 yards the wrong way. Riegel’s mistake set up a safety for Georgia Tech, which turned out to be the deciding factor in the opponent’s victory. Aczel and colleagues’ analyses revealed that subjects viewed this category of stupid mistake as the least stupid.

It is, of course, unrealistic to think that we could ever eliminate human error. To err will always be human. However, this research gives us a better description of our failings and weaknesses, and a place to start in thinking about interventions and prescriptions to help us err less. This research also reminds us of our shared human weaknesses. We all tend to overestimate our abilities, to make impulsive decisions, and to fail to keep attention. This simple realization makes stupid mistakes seem, perhaps, a little less stupid — and a little more human.

Title: Why you make breathtakingly stupid mistakes

●Rating the stories on the factors like responsibilities, influences, etc.

●(72)__________ how the subjects rate the stories.

Values of the research ●Providing us with a clear image of our failings and weaknesses.

●Helping us err less though we are (79)__________ to stay away from error.

●Enabling us to evaluate our abilities objectively, make rational decisions and always get (80)_______________.

  第五部分:

  读写任务(共1小题;满分25分)阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Some people and businesses get lucky—they happen to be in the right place at the right time. And they often succeed, at least in the short run, despite themselves. But depending on luck isn't a good idea—as the Chinese proverb goes, “Man who waits for roast duck to fly into mouth must wait very long time.”

The vast majority of what we call “luck” is the result of vision and purpose, hard work and passion. As another saying goes, “The harder I work, the more luck I have.”Successful people work hard to put themselves into a position where good fortune can find them. The harder a manager works at developing people, the luckier he will be in having a skilled and motivated staff. The harder a salesperson works at satisfying customers, the luckier he will be at gaining referrals. The harder a couple works at it, the luckier they are at having a great relationship.

All that success requires is a strong vision, hard work, being passionate about goals, building relationships, constantly seeking to improve, selfdiscipline and taking smart risks.

  Beyond that, it's simply luck.

Does luck play an important role in success?

If a person wants to succeed, he can just hope that luck will help him.Luck, however, will never help those to succeed if they are lazy and lack responsibility.

We students can really learn a lot from reading this passage.Because nowadays, it is generally believed among some people that success comes from luck. They believe it in love, in examinations, and even in promotion. For instance, when some of them don't get good marks in the College Entrance Examinations or fail to be enrolled by a key university, they will attribute it to bad luck.

However, others believe in themselves. They are working hard and trying their best to achieve what they want.Although they may fail sometimes, they don't give up, for they believe that luck can only help those who are hardworking, passionate about goals, constantly seeking to improve and selfdisciplined and one's life lies in his own hand.

As for me, I am in favour of the latter opinion.Luck doesn't come alone. It goes hand in hand with hard work and knowledge.

  Text 1

M: Why don’t you just tell Mr. Johnson how you feel?

W: I’m just so angry that I don’t know what I would say to him!

  Text 2

W: It’s amazing that you got such a high bonus.

M: Well, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Bonuses depend on company performance, and I worked overtime almost every day.

  Text 3

M: Diana, I think Friday is a bad night for a party. Everybody is always too tired to stay up all night.

W: All right. Let’s make it one day later.

  Text 4

M: For the last time, please accept my offer! I know exactly what these things are supposed to cost. I’ve been in this business for over twelve years, so I know what I’m talking about.

W: Sir, perhaps you haven’t heard me clearly. We only sell items at fixed prices here. All prices are final, I’m afraid.

  Text 5

W: Honey, I’m going downtown. Do we need anything from the grocery store?

M: We need some steaks and some corn for the barbecue tonight. And maybe you could get some stamps afterwards.

  W: All right.

  Text 6

W: Hello, young man. Be a good boy and help an old woman cross the street, would you?

M: Of course, madam. I’d be glad to.

W: Thank you so much. I’m afraid these legs don’t move as fast as they used to!

M: Well, I think you’re looking very healthy. By the way, where are you going today?

W: Oh, I’m just going to the drugstore over there. I’ve got to pick up some medication for my husband.

M: Well, I will wait for you outside the drugstore and help you back across the street whenever you’re ready.

  W: You are so kind!

  Text 7

M: Have you seen Dan the Bear?

  W: No, I haven’t.

M: Oh, well, he’s supposed to go onstage in 10 minutes. All the kids are waiting for him to sing.

W: Hmm... Maybe he’s out by the fish tank giving away balloons and talking with the dolphin trainer. Did you check there?

M: Yes, I did, but they said they hadn’t seen him. If you see him, please tell him that he’s needed on the small stage as soon as possible.

W: Okay, I’ll send a radio message out to all of the security officers and have them look for him. I’m sure he’s on his way right now.

M: Great. Thank you so much for your support. Will I see you at the bar after work tonight?

W: I think I’ll go there a bit later. I want to get a haircut and change clothes first.

M: Great. I’ll buy you a drink if you can get Dan the Bear onstage on time.

  W: Okay, it’s a deal.

  Text 8

M: Hey! Long time no see.

W: Hi! How are you? How was your weekend?

M: It was fantastic. I had so much fun. I wish it had been longer. How was yours?

W: Oh, you don’t want to hear about it. Anyway, what did you do that was so fantastic?

M: Well, I went snowboarding on Saturday, and I went to my grandparents’ house on Sunday.

W: How fun! It sounds like you were busy. I wish I had gone snowboarding. Maybe I’ll go this weekend. Aren’t you tired after your busy weekend?

M: A little, but it was a productive weekend, so I’m feeling okay. I had been planning to visit my grandparents for a long time, and I finally got some time to do it. Did you just stay in the dorm all weekend?

W: Well, I rented a bunch of DVDs and watched them all. That is why my eyes are swollen.

M: I can see that. Oh, let’s hurry! Professor Don will be mad at us if we are late again!

W: Hey there. I’m your neighbor. My name is Shirley.

M: Hi, Shirley. I’m Bob. It’s nice to meet you.

W: Nice to meet you, too.

  M: Please come in.

W: Here is a little gift for your family. It’s a calendar with all the community events on it.

M: Thank you! I really appreciate it.

W: Since we are neighbors, if you need any help with anything, please feel free to ask me.

M: I will. Actually, I am worried about the security of this community because my house has been robbed twice before.

W: Oh don’t worry about that. There are security guards on duty 24 hours a day.

M: Really? That’s good. Are there any supermarkets in the neighborhood?

W: Of course. There is a Carrefour nearby. I’ll take you there sometime if you want.

  M: Terrific!

W: By the way, there will be a party for all the new neighbors the day after tomorrow. I hope I will see you there.

  M: I’ll be there.

W: Great. I’ve got to go. See you later!

  M. OK. Come and visit anytime.

  W: Thanks. I will!

  Text 10

Deep Spring is an American college. It is an unusual college. It is located high in the mountains in California, not in a college town. The campus is a collection of old buildings with no beautiful classrooms. The only college-like thing about Deep Springs is its library. Students can use the 17000 books 24 hours a day. The library is never crowded because there are only 24 students at the college, and they are all male. There are only five professors. These teachers believe in the college, but they are not well-paid. In fact, they only get paid about 9000 dollars a year. The college gives teachers and students something more important than money —peace and quiet. There is no place like Deep Springs. Students are there to learn and they cannot run away from their problems because there is no place to run to. At most colleges, students can close their books and go to a film, or they can go out to restaurants or parties, but the students at Deep Springs have completely different activities. They can talk to each other or their teachers, or they can go out for a walk in the mountains, and that’s about it. Deep Springs is far from the world of restaurants and cinemas. There isn’t even one television set on campus.
