  (2016·郑州二检)

Alexander Fleming was born in Scotland in 1881.

He left school when he was thirteen years old;for a few

years he worked in a shipping company. When he was

about twenty years old,an uncle died and left him some money.

At his elder brother's advice, he took an entrance

examination for medical school. He passed brilliantly

and joined St. Mary's Hospital in London. There he met

Sir Almroth Wright and that meeting changed the

course of his life. When he graduated, he joined Wright's

laboratory staff instead of going into private practice as

  he had intended.

During the First World War, he served in the Royal

Army Medical Corps and was shocked by what he saw

in France. Hundreds of wounded soldiers, with bacteria crawling in their wounds ,were brought to his hospital. But there was little he could do for them as the antiseptics in use then were not effective for deep wounds. He was horrified by the suffering and the numerous deaths, but Fleming was a determined man full of courage and he vowed to discover something that would kill these bacteria and save lives.

After the war he continued his research. For years he toiled on;then in September 1928 he made one of the greatest discoveries of all time. He had been growing colonies of bacteria in flat, open dishes. A few days later he saw that mould had settled in one of the dishes. However, he did not throw away the dish; instead he examined it and saw that no bacteria grow near the mould. “Had the mould killed the bacteria?” he asked himself.

A chemical from the mould had done just that. Fleming later named this chemical penicillin. Thus one of the greatest achievements of man had taken place.

But penicillin was not immediately used—years were to pass before that happened. More knowledge about the drug was gained and in 1941 many people were successfully treated. Before long penicillin was produced on a large scale, and during the Second World War it helped save thousands of wounded soldiers.

YICHANG, Hubei, July 31 (Xinhua)—The Three Gorges Dam has successfully controlled the biggest flood crest (洪峰) on the Yangtze River this year, officials said on Tuesday.

The Three Gorges Reservoir reduced the discharge (排出) of floodwater to 44 000 cubic metres per second on Tuesday morning from the previous 48 000 cubic metres,to protect the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Meanwhile, the water level in the reservoir rose from 144.03 metres at midday on Monday to 145.19 metres at 7:00 p, m. on Tuesday.

“The flood crest passed the Three Gorges Dam smoothly,” said Cao Guangjing, deputy general manager of the China Yangtze Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTGPC).

Cao said it was the first time the dam had to control flood crest since construction of the world's largest dam was completed on May 20 last year.

The inflow was 50 000 cubie metres per second on Tuesday, 2500 cubic metres less than Monday's peak.

It was earlier predicted that inflow would top 56 700 cubic metres per second on Tuesday as more rain was forecast. However, the wind divided the rain clouds on Monday afternoon, said Cao.

Water levels on the middle and lower reaches of the river were on the rise, said Cheng Haiyun, general engineer of the Yangtze River Hydrological Bureau.

Hubei Province, where the Three Gorges Project is located, is at risk. The provincial government had given orders to watch over the levees (堤坝) roundtheclock.

The Three Gorges Reservoir is capable of holding 39. 3 billion cubic metres of water, including 22.15 billion cubic metres extra in the flood season when it reaches its 175 metres.

Most of the floodprone areas are located at the middle and lower reaches, in economically developed regions that are home to 15 million people and contain 1.5 million hectares of farmland. Four major floods have occurred there in the 20th century, with the most recent in 1998 killing 1526 people.

  (2016·杭州二检)

Dogs are known for their sense of smell. They can find missing people and things like bombs and illegal (非法的) drugs. Now a study suggests that the animal known as man's best friend can even find bladder (膀胱) cancer.

Cancer cells are thought to produce chemicals with unusual smells. Researchers think dogs have the ability to smell these smells, even in very small amounts, in urine (尿). The sense of smell in dogs is thousands of times better than in humans.

The study follows reports of cases where, for example,a dog showed great interest in a growth on the leg of its owner. The mole (黑痣) was later found to be skin cancer. Carolyn Willis led a team of researchers at Amersham Hospital in England. They trained different kinds of dogs for the experiment. The study involved (需要) urine collected from bladder cancer patients, from people with other diseases and from healthy people. Each dog was tested eight times. In each test there were seven samples for the dogs to smell. The dog was supposed to signal the one from a bladder cancer patient by lying down next to it. Two cocker spaniels (小猎犬) were correct fiftysix percent of the time. But the scientists reported an average success rate of fortyone percent. As a group, the study found that the dogs chose the correct sample twentytwo out of fiftyfour times. That is almost three times more often than would be expected by chance alone.

  The

  British

  Medical

  Journal

  published

the research. In all, thirtysix bladder cancer patients and one hundred and eight other people took part. During training, all the dogs reportedly even identified (识别) a cancer in a person who had been tested healthy before the study. Doctors found a growth on the person's right kidney (肾). Carolyn Willis said dogs could help scientists identify the compounds produced by bladder cancer. That information

  could

  then

  be

  used

  to

develop machines to test for the chemicals. Now, doctors must remove tissue (组织) from the bladder to test for cancer. The team also plans to use dogs to help identify markers for other kinds of cancer.

  B.A patient.

  Are Baiji Dolphin Extinct?

Does the Yangtze River still have baiji ,the graceful, grey dolphin with tiny eyes and a long narrow beak?

Since November 6 ,a team of scientists from China, Switzerland, the United Kingdom ,the United States, Germany and

Japan have been searching for any sign of the freshwater dolphin on the middle and lower sections of the river. After six

  weeks,they came back emptyhanded.

Wang Ding, of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who is the head of the team, said he has seen a sharp decline in the

baiji population over the past few decades. However, he is still unwilling to call the species extinct, and adds, “We will try

every effort to save them as long as they are not found to be extinct.”

The baiji is shy and nearly blind and is one of the world's oldest dolphin species. It dates back some 20 million years

and is found only in the Yangtze. It's listed as one of the 12 most endangered animal species in the world.

Around 400 baiji were believed to be living in the Yangtze until the 1980s. A 1997 survey spotted 13. Two years later

their number was down to two.

The rapid disappearance of this dolphin over the past two decades coincided with (与……同时) the rapid expansion

of economic development along the river. Research on some dead baiji collected in recent years showed that more than 90

percent of the deaths were caused by human activities.

One reason is that overfishing has cut the dolphin's food sources. Dams built along the river and neighboring waterways have also kept them from swimming into and out of their habitats. Meanwhile, waste discharge (排放) has seriously

polluted the river. And heavy river traffic has greatly reduced their living space.

The disappearance of the baiji would be the first instance of a large aquatic mammal (水生哺乳动物) being driven to

extinction since hunting killed off the monk seal (僧海豹) around 1952.

  本文是篇说明文,主要对白鳍豚这一物种进行介绍,并指出过度捕鱼、修建大坝和废物排放是导致这一物种消亡的主要原因。
