People used to say, “The hand that rocks (摇) the cradle (摇篮) rules the world.” and “Behind every successful man there is a woman.”

Both these sayings mean the same thing. Men rule the world, but their mothers and wives rule them.

Most American women wish to make their husbands and sons successful, but some of them want more for themselves. They want good jobs. When they work they want to be better paid. They want to be as successful as men.

The American women’s liberation movement was started by women who didn’t want to stand behind successful men. They wanted to stand beside men, with the same chance for success. They refused to work side by side with men who do the same work for a higher pay.

A liberated woman must be proud of being a woman and have confidence (自信) in herself. If somebody says to her, “You have come a long way, baby.” she will smile and answer, “Not nearly as far as I’m going to go, baby!”

This movement is quite new, and many American women don’t agree yet. But it has already made some important changes in women’s lives--- in men’s lives, too.

For years, there has been a bias (偏见) against science among clinical psychologists (临床心理学家). In a two-year analysis to be published in November in Perspectives on Psychological Science, psychologists led by Timothy B. Baker of the University of Wisconsin charge that many clinical psychologists fail to “provide the treatments for which there is the strongest evidence of effectiveness” and “give more weight to their personal experiences than to science.” As a result, patients have no guarantee that their “treatment will be informed by science.” Walter Mischel of Columbia University is even crueler in his judgment. “The disconnect between what clinical psychologists do and what science has discovered is an extreme embarrassment,” he told me, and “there is a widening gap between clinical practice and science”

The “widening” reflects the great progress that psychological research has made in identifying the most effective treatments. Thanks to strict clinical trials, we now know that teaching patients to think about their thoughts in new, healthier ways and to act on those new ways of thinking are effective against depression, panic disorder and other problems, with multiple trials showing that these treatments — the tools of psychology — bring more lasting benefits than drugs.

You wouldn’t know this if you sought help from a typical clinical psychologist. Although many treatments are effective, relatively few psychologists learn or practice them.

Why in the world not? For one thing, says Baker, clinical psychologists are “very doubtful about the role of science” and “lack solid science training”. Also, one third of patients get better no matter what treatment (if any) they have, “and psychologists remember these successes, believing, wrongly, that they are the result of the treatment.”

When faced with evidence that treatments they offer are not supported by science, clinical psychologists argue that they know better than some study that works. A 2008 study of 591 psychologists in private practice found that they rely more on their own and colleagues’ experience than on science when deciding how to treat a patient. If they keep on this path as insurance companies demand evidence-based medicine, warns Mischel, psychology will “discredit itself.”

  68. Many clinical psychologists fail to provide the most effective treatments because ______

  A. they are unfamiliar with their patients

  B. they believe in science and evidence

  C. they rely on their personal experiences

  D. they depend on their colleagues’ help

  69. How do clinical psychologists respond when charged that their treatments are not supported by science?

  A. They feel embarrassed.

  B. They are disappointed.

  C. They try to defend themselves

  D. They doubt their treatments

  70. In Mischel’s opinion, psychology will ______ become more reliable if insurance companies won’t demand evidence-based medicine

develop faster with the support of insurance companies

work together with insurance companies to provide better treatment

destroy its own reputation if no improvement is made

M: Well, once you get to be in your twenties, your feet stop growing, so you are probably still a 7. But let’s measure them just in case.

W: OK… so, what does it say?

M: Well, it looks like you’re an 8. No wonder your feet have been hurting you. You’ve been wearing shoes that are one size too small!

  Text 7

W: Whew! Thanks for stopping. Sometimes it can be impossible to get a cab in the rain.

  M: No worries. Where to?

W: I’m going to Fifth Avenue and East 22nd Street. No rush at all, though.

M: Well, that’s good because it looks like we’re not going to be able to move more than a few feet per minute!

W: Well, that’s what happens when it starts to rain during rush hour. I’m one of the lucky ones. Usually, I would have an appointment around this time, but today I get to go home early!

M: That’s great, madam. I’ll try to get you home as early as possible.

  Text 8

W: OK, that’s a cut! Let’s take it from the top, everyone.

M: What was the problem that time?

W: The feeling was all wrong, Mike. She is telling you that she doesn’t want to see you anymore, but I want to get more anger from you. You’re acting hurt and sad, but that’s not how your character would act in this situation.

M: But Jason and Laura have been together for three years. Don’t you think his reaction would be one of both anger and sadness?

W: At this point, no. I think he would react the way most guys would, and then later on, we would see his real feelings.

M: I’m not so sure about that.

W: Let’s try it my way, and you can see how you feel when you’re saying your lines. After that, if it still doesn’t feel right, we can go back to the drawing board.

  Text 9

W: Hey, welcome to Berlin! It’s great to see you again.

M: Yeah, good to see you too! Have you been waiting here at the station long?

W: Only fifteen minutes. But let’s get out of this cold and go to my apartment! How are you feeling after that long bus ride?

M: Ah, it wasn’t too bad. It was only nineteen hours.

W: That’s crazy! You could’ve flown here from London for 60 euros, and it would only have taken an hour and a half. Was it really worth all that time, just to save a bit of money?

M: Well, it was a pretty uncomfortable ride, to be honest. The bus was starting to smell toward the end of it, and there was a guy next to me who was breathing really loudly while he was sleeping. But the reason I took the bus was because it’s more environmentally friendly than flying.

W: I think it’s great you want to help the environment. But you look so exhausted right now. I just think you should be a little more careful with your health.

M: Well, I wasn’t expecting the bus to be so unpleasant. But you’re right. Next time I visit you, I’ll probably fly.

Welcome back to Modern Parenting. We’ve already talked about being open and honest with your kids, but there is one thing that all good parents do, and it’s surprisingly simple: read to your kids. Studies show that children are better prepared for school and tend to get better grades later on if their parents make a habit of reading to them from a young age. One study from Harvard University found that the number of books in the home was the single biggest factor related to success in school, more than the education or income of the parents! Reading is fun, and it can be an important part of relaxing at bedtime. Best of all, it gives parents an opportunity to communicate with their children and teach them about the world. It’s never too early to start reading to your children. Many parents buy books for their kids long before they can talk, and some even start reading to their children before they are born! Trips to the library or the bookstore can be fun activities for young families to do together. So parents, if you’re wondering what to do with your kids tonight, remember: all you need is a good book! That’s all for Modern Parenting. This is Lesley, on 105.7 FM, saying good night.
