Singer-songwriter George Michael has died at the age of 53. The death of the former Wham! Star, who went on to a long solo career, was announced by his publicist.

The star was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, of Greek origin, in north London.He sold more than 100 million albums, with Wham! single hits including “Club Tropicana,” “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” and “Everything She Wants.” “Last Christmas” has re-entered the charts for many years.

The full publicist statement today said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”No cause of death is confirmed and police said there were no suspicious circumstances.
