第二部分 阅读理解(共小题;每小题2分,满分分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、CD)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。A
One night recently, I was driving down a two-lane highway at about 60 miles an hour. A car approached from the opposite direction at about the same speed. As we passed each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for only a second. I wondered whether he might be thinking as I was. How dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall asleep, not to be put off by a phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life to a sudden end. Though we had never spoken a word to each other, he relied on me in just the same way.
Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world works. At some level, we all depend upon one another. Sometimes that dependence requires us simply not to do something like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act cooperatively, with friends or even with strangers.
As technology shrinks our world, the need increases for cooperative action among nations. In 2003, doctors in five nations were quickly organized to identify the SARS virus, which saved thousands of lives. The threat of international terrorism has shown itself to be a similar problem, one requiring team action by police and intelligence forces across the world. We must recognize that our fates are not ours alone to control.
In my own life, I’ve put great stock in personal responsibility. But, as time has passed, I’ve also come to believe that there are moments when one must rely upon the good faith and judgment of others. So, while each of us faces the case of driving alone down a dark road, what we must learn is that the approaching light may not be a threat, but a shared moment of trust.
31. The author considers it very important ______.
A. to drive with company
B. to have personal independence
C. to gain certain responsibility
D. to share trust and cooperation
32. From the second paragraph, we know the author drew the important lesson from ______.
A. only one experience
B. many similar experiences
C. a driver on a dark road
D. many friends and strangers
33. The need for cooperation increases because ______.
A. peoples’ fates can’t be controlled by themselves
B. certain viruses can spread in a quick way
C. terrorism can happen everywhere and every day
D. the world has become much more dangerous
34. We can infer from the last paragraph that the author has ______.
A. believed in one’s own personal responsibility
B. counted upon himself alone in everything
C. had no trust in others’ good faith and judgment
D. had accomplished a change on his viewpoint
B
You put a great deal of effort into reaching the college of your choice. It’s time to get started. But what’s next? Beginning college can be an exciting but awkward time. Follow these tips to adjust to your new life rapidly and make the most of your college experience.
● To save time and money, use the college’s bus system. Taking the bus to school is quick, easy and free in most college towns. You won’t have to locate or afford a place to park either. It’s also a good way to be environmentally aware.
● Save pennies on books by waiting until class starts. You might not even need all of the recommended books. New textbooks cost an arm and a leg. Try buying used textbooks — it’s a surefire way to save money and serves the purpose as well.
● Do never look at college life as an endless series of parties and social activities. But there is a whole lot more to college if you’re serious about graduating. Having a good college experience is all about balancing work and fun.
● Be aware that your living environment can largely affect your academic success. If the dorm doesn’t suit you, consider living at home with your family or renting your own apartment. The best location for your studies isn’t always your dorm. Find a quiet area, like the library, to do your work. Alternatively, buy some headphones that block out noise.
● Be mindful of your diet. Make healthy food choices and watch what you eat. Avoid foods that are processed or high in sugar. The “freshman 15” is real. Many college students gain at least 15 pounds during their freshmen year.
● While electives (选修课) can be helpful when figuring out your major, you shouldn’t entirely rely on them. Clubs and other organizations exist around. Get involved. Make sure, though, that you still have time to study. Having too much on your plate can hurt your grades.
35. Which of the following ideas can be financially wise?
A. Driving your own car.
B. Buying used books.
C. Renting an apartment.
D. Attending activities.
36. In the text, freshmen are repeatedly warned against ______.
A. academic failures
B. physical problems
C. traffic accidents
D. social activities
37. The “freshman 15” tells the fact that some freshmen ______.
A. attend limited activities on campus
B. have little regular physical exercise
C. focus less on their academic work
D. take relaxed attitudes to their diets
38. The underlined phrase “having too much on your plate” probably refers to ______.
A. using too much money for meals
B. eating too many unhealthy foods
C. taking part in too many after-class activities
D. taking an elective that has too many students
C
Based on new analysis, we are rapidly approaching major climate change and the effects on society and the environment could be quite severe. Geographers predict that within the next eighty years, current world climate zones could shift and some could completely disappear. Polar regions will get colder while tropical regions will get even hotter, forcing animals to migrate
(迁徙) north.
Climate changes like these could lead to the spread of diseases. Tropical storms and hurricanes will not only increase but may also become more intense. If the changes come too quickly, animal and plant species may not be able to adapt fast enough and could disappear.
According to Science Daily, a new study predicts that by the year 2100, many of today’s familiar climates will be replaced by climates unknown in today’s world. It is urgent that we reduce the risks of these far-reaching consequences for the whole world. The planet itself has been showing signs of change. In 2004, a serious tsunami created by a major earthquake killed thousands in Sumatra and in 2008, thousands died in China because of another severe earthquake. Egypt was hit in 2009 with a major earthquake and Haiti was devastated in 2010 by yet another massive earthquake.
Within just the last few months, new reports from around the world have been coming in and most agree that our climate situation is much worse than previously thought. At this point, it doesn’t matter what is causing it, but rather, what can be done about it. What’s more, our world is getting more and more unstable every year. There is war and threat of war everywhere. Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and serious.
However, other planets are experiencing global warming as well as our own and some scientists believe there may be some connection between this. No one knows anything for sure at this point because there is simply not enough data.
39. Which of the following would be the best title for the Passage ?
A. Ways to protect our planet.
B. Solutions to climate change.
C. Be prepared for climate change.
D. Climate change and its effects.
40. What is the author’s purpose in using the examples of earthquakes?
A. To show the damage earthquakes caused.
B. To remind people to prevent future earthquakes.
C. To show major changes are taking place on the planet.
D. To tell us more earthquakes will happen in the future.
41. What does the underlined word “devastated” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Separated.
B. Destroyed.
C. Removed.
D. Affected.
42. What can be inferred from the Passage?
A. Animals and plants won’t die out as long as climate changes slowly.
B. There’s enough data for us to predict the future of climate change.
C. The world is getting more unstable because of animal migration.
D. The earth is not the only planet that is experiencing climate change.
D
I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval, he learns to love himself and will be successful in his own way. Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he would concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate when he stood up. Could he be more absorbed while standing up?
This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the willpower to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.
Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality qualities, and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.
I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being personal and unique. It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life.
43. Time and again the author got his son seated in order to make him ______.
A. work fast
B. go polite
C. stay relaxed
D. keep attentive
44. The underlined “it” (in the first paragraph) probably refers to ______.
A. his son’s doing better while standing up
B. his failure in keeping his son under control
C. his own experience as a school boy
D. his disappointment with his active child
45. By this passage, the author attempts to tell other parents to ______.
A. correct their kids’ manners from the early ages
B. respect and trust their kids’ ways of behaviors
C. develop a good relationship with their children
D. guarantee their children’s freedom at home
46. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A. Parental help with teens’ study
B. Adult influence on teen growth
C. Kids’ success in their own styles
D. Friendship between generations
E
Listening to music while you drive can improve your speed and ability to get away from accidents, according to Australian psychologists. But turning your car radio up to full volume could probably make you end up in an accident. The performance of difficult tasks can be influenced if people are subjected to loud noise. The experience of pulling up at traffic lights alongside cars with loud music made some psychologists in the University of Sydney look into whether loud music has something to do with driving.
The psychologists invited 60 men and women aged between 20 and 28 as subjects and tested them on almost the same driving tasks under three noise conditions: silence, rock music played at a gentle 55 decibels (分贝), and the same music at 85 decibels.
For 10 minutes the subjects sat in front of a screen operating a simple machine like a car. They had to track (追踪) a moving disk on screen, respond to traffic signals changing color, and brake in response to arrows that appeared without warning.
On the tracking task, there was no difference in performance under the three noise conditions. But under both the loud and quiet music conditions, the performers “braked” at a red light about 50 milliseconds sooner than they did when there was no rock music at all. That could mean a reduction in braking distance of a couple of meters actually, the difference between life and death for a pedestrian.
When it came to the arrows that appeared across the visual field, the psychologists found that when the music was quiet, people responded faster to objects in their central field of sight by about 50 milliseconds. For the people listening at 85 decibels, response times were dropped by a further 50 milliseconds — a whole tenth of second faster than those “driving” with no music.
“But there’s a trade-off,” the psychologists told the European Congress of Psychology. “They lose the ability to look around the whole situation effectively.” In responding to objects that suddenly appeared, people subjected to 85-decibel rock music were around 100 milliseconds slower than both the other groups. Since some accidents ?asuch as children running into the road ?htake place without any notice, drivers listening to loud music must be less safe as a result.
47. Where did the researchers do the experiment?
A. At crossroads.
B. At a police traffic station.
C. In a crowded street.
D. Under the experimental conditions as those of the streets.
48. What does the underlined sentence “there’s a trade-off” in paragraph six mean?
A. Every coin has two sides.
B. Business is business.
C. Practice makes perfect.
D. A loss may turn out to be a gain.
49. Which of the following is NOT true of loud music?
A. It helped the performers to brake sooner at red lights.
B. It quickened the performers’ response to objects in their central field of sight
C. It helped the performers to respond faster to objects suddenly stepping in the way.
D. It can sometimes do harm to drivers.
50. On the whole, which of the following is the best way to make driving safer?
A. Loud music.
B. Quiet music.
C. Silence.
D. Heavy metal music.

第三部分

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题每小题2分, 满分10分)
On Christmas morning, Linda wakes up, and tries to imagine the wide-eyed surprise of children in another household as they unwrap the presents she carefully chose for them. Linda has never met the children, but that’s all part of the joy of giving as secret Santas, she says.
“It’s an amazing feeling to give away anonymous (匿名的)gifts” says Linda. “It brings a whole new meaning to the holidays.”
Linda and Tony are an American couple living in Toronto, Canada, and Linda did charitable work as a member of the American Women’s Club of Toronto. As the name suggests, members are U.S. citizens living in Toronto, who join together for friendship and community service.
To find her “adopted” family, Linda goes to the local schools and requests a wish list for a family that’s struggling to survive. Last year she helped a single mother with three children. The mother works as a cleaning lady in a nursing home.
“The list is always heartbreaking. They have an opportunity to ask for anything and do just the opposite, asking for basic clothes or simple toys,” she says. “We always buy the kids a new winter coat, hats, and gloves.” She also buys gifts for the parents.
Last year Linda asked the mother for a second wish list, one that didn’t include the basics. “Every child should have a Christmas that sticks with them for a lifetime.” She purchased iPods for the two older children and a video game system for the youngest. “I have learned a very valuable lesson in all of this,” says Linda. “Pay attention to what’s going on in your own backyard—no matter where you live.”
The joy of giving as secret Santas is much sweeter when the gift is anonymous.

In spite of the fast development of transportation in the major cities of China, more and more traffic problems are arising. A serious one is heavy traffic. Very often, we see cars in front of us parked on both sides of the street, driving down the street, or stuck in traffic with drivers waiting impatiently.
There’re mainly two factors that cause this problem. In the first place, vast population contributes to heavy traffic and growing numbers of private cars add to the pressure on the severe traffic conditions. What’s worse, some people are unaware of the importance of obeying traffic regulations, so it’s not uncommon to see accidents blocking traffic.
Personally, I think that rather than promote private cars, it’s better to improve the public transportation system with scientific road design and proper management. More importantly, never can traffic jams be eased without self-disciplined citizens.
