  A

On the last day of his life, my dog Otto spent that morning of spring napping in the garden. This was always one of his favorite things to do, even before the days when he was too old and too weak to get out of a car by himself.

I probably would have started crying over Otto right then ,if my two other little dogs hadn't suddenly raced past. Larry, who was a puppy, got knocked into Otto, then licked Otto's ear, and that got Otto excited, and Otto barked and tried to stand up again, but it was hard for him.

Soon it was time for me to drive to see Steve, our vet.

When Steve gave Otto the first shot, it made him woozy. Otto wandered over to where Steve and I were sitting and settled down between us. He has always liked to touch everyone in his pack, if possible, while he sleeps.

After Steve gave him the last shot and Otto stopped breathing, he didn't look like Otto anymore. He looked like an old gray-brown piece of beat-up carpet, and I suddenly realized what bad shape he'd been in for a long ,long time. I wondered if he'd been in much more pain than I knew. Wondering made me feel even worse.

The week after Otto died was not good. Every morning when I walked Larry and Sticky in the neighborhood, somebody would come up and say they had heard about Otto and they were sorry. They were all Otto's friends and some of them cried. Others, like Debbie who lives on my street, reminded me about how, even at the end, Otto would stand between her twins' stroller (婴儿车)and the street when the garbage truck went by. "Like it was his job to protect them," she marveled. Otto has left us, but his memory lives on.

  31. How did the author feel when Otto was napping in the garden?

  A. She felt like crying.

  B. He liked people to keep him company.

  C. He died a very painful death.

  D. He was protected by the neighbors.

  34. We can see from the passage that Sticky is a

It is a common fear among users of Facebook and other social media around the world—how to deal with a friend request from your boss or employee.

A survey released on Thursday found that 56 percent of Americans say it is irresponsible to be friends with a boss and 62 percent say it is wrong to be friends with an employee. But 76 percent believe it is acceptable to be friends with a workplace peer, according to the survey of 1,000 people by Liberty Mutual’s Responsibility Project.

"When the roles change what do you do then? Do you unfriend someone if they have now been promoted to be your boss or if you’re now their boss,”said researcher Kelly Holland. "We get into some really sticky situations there in terms of what people will think is responsible,”she said.

When using social media at work,73 percent say it is not appropriate to update your Facebook status,82 percent say you should not upload photos,72 percent believe tweeting is wrong and 79 percent say it is not acceptable to watch online videos. Yet 66 percent say it is fine to check your personal email while at work.

“When people focus on responsibility, they know what the responsible thing is to do but whether they are doing that in practice or not is a different story,” said Holland.

Americans are split on whether companies should review the social media profiles of job candidates with 52 percent saying it is appropriate and 48 percent saying it is unacceptable. Social media can also lead to some difficult decisions when it comes to family and relationships. Sixty percent of those polled say that it is“completely acceptable" to unfriend an ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend. More than 40 percent of parents believe it is irresponsible to post photos of children online. Thirty one percent monitor their children's Facebook accounts and almost 70 percent are friends with their children on Facebook or My Space. But 72 percent limit the time their children spend on social media networks.

The poll was taken between January 12一15.

  43.The text is mainly about________

  C. not using social media at work

  C. Eighty two percent say it isn’t appropriate to upload photos at work.

  D. Seventy six percent believe it is acceptable to be friends with employee,

  46. What was the writer’s attitude towards the result of survey?

  A. Defensive.

  B. Critical.

  C. Objective.

  D. Doubtful

Against the supposition (猜想)that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.

This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest fires to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over the next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling.

This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fires in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.

Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming. Ozone(臭氧) levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.

“We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.” Scientists tracked the change in the amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicted, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.

  47. According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may __________.

  A. result in a warming climate

  B. cause the forest fires to occur more frequently

  C. lead to a longer fire season

  D. protect the forests and the environment there

  48. Earlier studies about northern forest fires __________.

  A. analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate

  B. indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere

  C. suggest that people should take measures to protect environment

  D. suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming

  49. The underlined phrase “soak up” in the last paragraph most probably means __________.

  A. released

  B. absorbed

  C. created

  D. distributed

  50. From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may _____.

  A. warm the climate as the supposition goes

  B. allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate

  C. destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice

  D. help to gain more energy rather than release more energy

  阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

[1]The word addiction usually makes you think of alcohol or drugs, but in modern-day society we are seeing some new kinds of addictions. Some people are compulsive (难以自制的) shoppers. Others find it impossible to pull themselves away from their work. Still others spend countless hours watching TV or playing computer games

[2]Over the years, shopping has become a very common activity. Many people enjoy going to malls or stores more and more everyday, but it’s more than a common hobby for some of them. They have turned into shopaholics. They are people who simply enjoy shopping and walking around spending money without being able to stop doing it. They are hooked on shopping and usually buy things that they don’t need. Even though they don’t have enough money, they buy everything they want.

[3]The question is: why do they have this addiction? There isn’t a specific answer. Some people go shopping when they are sad, worried, upset or lonely and they want to feel better. They use this activity as a way to forget their problems. Shopaholics say that they feel more important and better after they buy something. They also tend to have this addiction when they feel guilty.

[4]Shopaholism seems to be a harmless addiction, but it can ___________. Some of them can be psychological. If this is the case, people addicted to shopping should go to a support group to help them break this habit. However, the process, like for most addictions, is long, and they suffer a lot. It can also cause financial problems. They just think about satisfying their feelings, so they spend money they don’t have. They get deep in debt, and they can even go bankrupt and get sent to prison.

  56. List three activities that might develop into addictions based on the text.

  Dear Rick,

After a careful study of all the informations about the three cities ,I suggest you chose to live in City A. First, City A is the safest of three. As violence and crimes are on the rise all over the world, that is only wise to choose a place which you and your family are going to be safe. Second, the job opportunities, though not the best, is quite good. You don't need worry about whether you can find a job or not. Third, entertainment in City A was not bad. Last, though the climate is the worst of the three, but it is not a major concern because you stay indoors mostly of the time and you will find all the rooms air-conditioned.

  六 作文

  Editor,

I’m a student in Senior Three. We have made a survey——“Who do you turn to when in trouble?” Here are the results.

Most of the students will go to their classmates or friends when in trouble. They're almost of the same age, so they can talk with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles and ask for their help as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students. Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can't get on well with others. They have few friends.

In my opinion, when in trouble we'd better ask our teachers, parents, friends or classmates for help.

Different people have different experiences. And they are likely to help you out of the troubles. Then you can remove some of your difficulties and feel relaxed.

  Thank you ,Best wishes!

  Yours,

  Jack

  B. There was a talk about the increase of the world's population.
